Anthony Rizzo Retires
First baseman Anthony Rizzo is retiring as a member of the Chicago Cubs, Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports. The 36-year-old will serve as an ambassador the Cubs, who will honor him before their game against the Tampa Bay Rays this Saturday. Rizzo entered the professional ranks as a sixth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2007, but they eventually traded him to the San Diego Padres. He made his way to the Cubs in a 2012 trade and became a franchise icon thanks to his on- and off-field contributions. Rizzo spent 2012-21 with Chicago and went on to make three All-Star teams, win four Gold Gloves, and help the club to a World Series title in 2016, breaking a 108-year drought. His run with the Cubs ended when they shipped him to the New York Yankees in July 2021. Rizzo stayed with the Yankees through 2024, and though he showed interest in continuing his career this season, he didn't sign with anyone as a free agent. He'll now wrap up an excellent career in the majors with a .261/.361/.467 line, 303 home runs, and 965 RBI over 1,727 games and 7,336 plate appearances.
