Devin Williams Takes Loss In Non-Save Situation Tuesday
Devin Williams continued his poor season on Tuesday, taking the loss in a 2-0 game against the Rangers. Williams came in to pitch the eighth inning with the game scoreless. He got the first out on a ground-out, allowed a double and two walks, gave up a go-ahead, two-RBI single, got the second out on a force-out, and then exited the game. Mark Leiter Jr. got the third out without allowing any more damage. Williams, who has historically been one of fantasy's most reliable closers, has been awful this season, going 3-4 with 17 of 20 save opportunities converted to go with a 5.44 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and an 11.51 K/9 rate in 43 IP. He has allowed runs in each of his last four appearances, and his last three appearances have resulted in two blown saves and a loss. The Yankees just acquired David Bednar and Camilo Doval, and also have Luke Weaver, who has some closing experience. At this point, it remains to be seen how many opportunities Williams will get before the Yankees turn to one of their other late-inning options.
