Keenan Allen, 2023 Outlook: Still A Valuable Resource For Rosters
2 years agoThe Chargers restructured Keenan Allen's contract in March, which cleared $8.9 million in cap space. This ensured that the 11-year veteran will retain his integral role in the team's aerial attack this season. It also provides Allen with an opportunity to build upon his impressive numbers since 2017, as he is now second among all wide receivers with 837 targets (9.5 per game) and 575 receptions (6.5 per game) during that span. Allen also returned from a lingering hamstring injury last season to lead his position in receptions (60/7.5 per game) and red zone targets (15) from Weeks 11-18, while finishing second in targets (83/10.4 per game), fifth in receiving yards (675/84.4 per game), and ninth in targets per route run (33.5%). Allen and Mike Williams will operate as Justin Herbert's top two weapons at wide receiver, as their roles will not be reduced by the arrival of Quentin Johnston. The Chargers finished third in passing offense during 2022 (269.6 yards per game) while ranking second in pass play percentage (65.1%) and attempts per game (41.9). The team could adjust their strategic approach during Kellen Moore's first season as offensive coordinator. However, Moore's reshaped attack will not impede Allen from confiscating a sizable target share, which justifies his selection in Round 5 of best ball drafts. His status beyond this season is uncertain due to a cap hit of nearly $35 million in 2024, but he should remain on dynasty rosters that can realistically contend for championships.
