Tyler Mahle Will Make a Rehab Appearance Tuesday
Tyler Mahle (shoulder) is working his way back from an extended layoff but still hopes to return to the majors this season. The veteran righty is lined up to work two innings for the Triple-A Round Rock Express on Tuesday, which lines up nicely with Nathan Eovaldi's open spot in the rotation. Manager Bruce Bochy said that if things go well, there is a possibility that Mahle could be activated for the team's September 8 matchup against the Brewers the next time this spot in the rotation comes up. Obviously, after missing almost three months, Mahle would be on a pitch limit, but he could be the opener for a bullpen game soon. Mahle was very effective, going 6-3 with a 2.34 ERA and 3.40 FIP before being shut down with a right rotator cuff strain. The Rangers are just 1.5 games back in the AL Wild Card race, so getting Mahle back down the stretch could be huge as they try to push to the postseason.
