Rhys Hoskins 2019 Outlook: Even More Valuable With Move Back To First
6 years agoMany fantasy managers were looking for Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins to break out in 2018. He made a statement in his sophomore season and is a few steps away from becoming an elite option. Hoskins finished the year with 34 homers, 96 RBI, 5 stolen bases, and a batting average that is right in line with the league average (.246). While the average is not exciting, it can likely be tolerated given his ability to hit homers and get on base. The power trend will continue in 2019, especially if he maintains his league-leading 51.7% fly-ball rate. He also continued to demonstrate an excellent approach at the plate, particularly a feel for taking a walk (13.2% BB%) as well as an ability to maintain an average strikeout rate (22.7%). He will go into the 2019 season with dual eligibility at first base and outfield, where he played in 135 games. However, Carlos Santana was traded in the offseason, allowing Hoskins to move back to first base, a position where he is more comfortable and one that has become quite scarce of reliable options. Hoskins is no longer an under-the-radar commodity; he is being drafted as the 43rd overall player and is currently ranked fourth among first baseman. This writer feels he will finish 2019 in the top three at the position.
