Phillies Acquire Matt Manning
Matt Manning from the Detroit Tigers for minor-league outfielder Josueth Quinonez. To make room for Manning, the Phillies designated righty Devin Sweet for assignment. Manning was a noteworthy prospect at the beginning of his career, as he joined the Tigers as the ninth pick in the 2016 draft and became a fixture on top 100 lists. Unfortunately for Manning and the Tigers, he never lived up to the billing in Detroit. Manning dealt with multiple injuries during his Tigers tenure and put up a 4.43 ERA with 6.31 K/9 and 3.01 BB/9 in 50 starts and 254 innings with the club. He made his last five starts as a Tiger this year and struggled to a 4.88 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP and 23:12 K:BB in 27 2/3 frames. Manning also owns an ugly 6.04 ERA in 50 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, but the Phillies are taking a low-risk chance on the 27-year-old improving with a change of scenery. Manning will begin his Phillies stint with Single-A Clearwater and attempt to work his way back to the majors.
