Welcome, RotoBallers, to our H2H points fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups for hitters for Week 21 of the 2025 season. These fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups are for the week of August 18 - August 24, looking at players below ~50 percent rostered on ESPN or Yahoo points leagues.

We'll be doing this points league roundup every week here at RotoBaller because we know points players get neglected, and we're here to help. Player values can vary wildly from platform to platform, so we'll highlight where players are the best and worst fits, with waiver-wire targets being evaluated in terms of the different scoring systems on ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, Fantrax, and NFBC.

Position eligibility is taken from Fantrax, and players are grouped by their most valuable fantasy position, using a hierarchy of C > 2B > OF > 3B > 1B > SS. Stats and rankings are calculated using games through Saturday, August 16.

Waiver Wire Caveats and APR Explanation

Roster% Thresholds

We use a combination of roster percentages to assess who is in our target pool, relying primarily on Yahoo and ESPN. For some players, you'll notice a wide discrepancy between the two. This is because ESPN's roster percentage is heavily weighted by points players, with guys who don't do well in their system (often because of an inflated strikeout rate) lagging behind the Yahoo! roster percentage.

For this reason, you'll sometimes see players (especially early) who might make you question my sanity in including them in a waiver-wire article, but don't worry, it's just a necessary glitch for coverage purposes.

APR stands for "Average Platform Rank" and is the average hitter rank between the four major point platforms: ESPN, Yahoo, CBS, and Fantrax. All player data is from FanGraphs and Baseball Savant, with injury information pulled from the Roster Resource section on the former.

Romy Gonzalez, BOS, 1B/2B/SS (Yahoo: 13%, ESPN: 6%) - Currently in the midst of a Week 20 stinker (296 APR), it looks like everyone is back off the Romy train. Mwah-ha-ha...Their loss. Gonzalez and the BoSox have six games in Week 21 (vs BAL, @NYY), but, more importantly, there are three LHPs scheduled. In 108 PA vs LHP this season, Gonzalez is slashing .354/.398/.667, with a .446 wOBA, .414 xwOBA, and 1.065 OPS. You should pick him up.

Kody Clemens, MIN, 1B/2B/OF (Yahoo: 3%, ESPN: 2%) - Light on name recognition, but quietly productive, Clemens has shown he's capable of being an occasional stream, finishing with a top-100 PA three times in the last six weeks. With lots of playing time against bad starters this week (vs ATH, @CHW) and only one of them being left-handed, Clemens is positioned to be your band-aid if you're in need.

Next Choices

Nolan Schanuel, LAA, 1B (Yahoo: 20%, ESPN: 17%) - Schanuel has had a slow fortnight (215 APR over the last two weeks), but his profile remains just as points-friendly as ever (13% K%, 10% BB%, piles of PAs), and he'll only have to face one of his fellow lefties in six games at home in Week 21 (vs CIN, vs CHC).

Jake Cronenworth, SD, 1B/2B (Yahoo: 16%, ESPN: 36%) - Is the Rake back??? Umm, no; but, to be fair, he never really deserved that sweet nickname. But Cronenworth has always had a super points-friendly profile, currently sitting with a 21% K% and 12% BB%. Cronenworth has back-to-back top-100 finishes and should compile a bunch of PAs again in a seven-game week at home (vs SF, vs LAD).

Jake Burger, TEX, 1B/3B (Yahoo: 33%, ESPN: 23%) - The Big Patty hasn't been very meaty this season, spending much of his time injured and off the grill. But he's been solid in his second week back from his latest IL stint (#79 hitter in Week 20), and will collect a lot of PAs in a week with seven games (@KC, vs CLE) and two LHPs on the schedule. Burger can still smash 'em, too -- facing LHPs this season, he's slashing .273/.324/.485, with a .344 wOBA and .375 xwOBA.

Desperate Choices

Josh Smith, TEX, 1B/3B/SS/OF (Yahoo: 27%, ESPN: 17%) - Averaging just a 203 APR over the last three weeks, Smith doesn't seem like an obvious add. But he continues to play a ton, only sitting against the occasional LHP, currently sporting a 17% K% and 9% BB%, while scoring a boatload of runs (59 R in 437 PA). Smith and the Rangers get seven games in Week 21 (@KC, vs CLE), with two coming vs LHPs.

Warming Bernabel, COL, 1B/3B (Yahoo: 17%, ESPN: 14%) - Outside of a monster in Week 18 (#6 hitter overall), Bernabel has done a whole lot of nothing, currently the #266 hitter in Week 20, headed into Sunday. But you know the deal, babes - four games at Coors Field sounds hard to resist.

Matt Shaw, CHC, 2B/3B/SS (Yahoo: 45%, ESPN: 24%) - It's times like these when we're reminded that the path of a prospect's development is not always linear right from the jump. Shaw has been proving the naysayers wrong for about a month now, finishing in the top-75 in four of the last five weeks. Grab him if he's still available because time is almost officially out.

Jonathan India, CIN, 2B/3B/SS (Yahoo: 35%, ESPN: 44%) - There's always Jonathan India, now and forever. Does he have an exciting ceiling? Umm, no. A propensity for completely disappearing? Umm, yes. But can he often give you a replacement-levelish performance as a fill-in? He sure can! If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. India and the Royals have seven games in Week 21 (vs TEX, @DET), with only one coming against a left-handed starter.

Adam Frazier, KC, 2B/OF (Yahoo: 2%, ESPN: 1%) - Does rolling the dice with the mids and lows of India sound just a little too exciting for you? Why not try Adam Frazier! Frazier has started 17 of the last 19 games for Kansas City and comes with the same low-fi compiler production as his teammate India. Please...Contain your excitement and try to settle down.

Joey Ortiz, MIL, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 16%, ESPN: 10%) - Like most of the other Brewers, Ortiz has been on fire for a while, and is currently the #23 hitter in Week 20. But Ortiz has been out of his slump for even longer than his teammates; over the last 10 scoring periods, Ortiz has seven top-100 finishes, three in the top-50, and two in the top-25. With a super-sized eight games and three LHPs on the schedule for Week 21 (@CHC, vs SF), Ortiz is again set up for success.

Miguel Andujar, CIN, 3B/OF (Yahoo: 27%, ESPN: 12%) - Miguel Andujar SZN??? Wait a tic! What year is it? No, we're still in 2025, but the now-Red, Andujar is back(ish) to raking. One of the newest Reds has now started nine-straight games, as Cincinnati slowly realizes what the rest of us have known the whole time...Skyline Chili is ter-rrible.

I kid, I kid -- they've actually realized that most options are better than an everyday Gavin Lux one, and that certainly includes Andujar, who has averaged a 58 APR over the last three periods. The Reds get six games on the road in Week 21 (@LAA, @ARI), with only one coming against a lefty starter.

Colson Montgomery, CHW, 3B/SS (Yahoo: 39%, ESPN: 15%) - Montgomery has slowed down some since finishing as a top-20 hitter in Weeks 17 and 18, but a 96 APR last week and a 128 APR so far in Week 20 isn't exactly a rookie canyon. The whiffs are heavy (and will weigh him down more if your league has a strikeout penalty), but the pop is for real -- Montgomery has a .524 SLG (.545 xSLG), with a .464 wOBA on contact (.484 xwOBAcon). The White Sox get six games in Week 21 (@ATL, MIN), but with one of Monty's fellow lefties on the starter schedule.

But a Jung-stream in Week 21 is more about playing the situation, more so than the player. Texas gets seven games (@KC, vs CLE) against some pretty shaky pitching, though, the two LHPs aren't starts Jung is likely to succeed in.

Cam Smith, HOU, 3B/OF (Yahoo: 18%, ESPN: 8%) - Mr. Smith has changed his name to Slumpy von Slumperson, averaging a brutal 243 APR over his last six periods. But he's got a great chance for redemption in a Week 21 that will see him get seven games and three LHPs (@DET, @BAL). In 97 PA vs LHPs this season, Smith is slashing .301/.392/.530, with a .396 wOBA and .922 OPS.

Nathan Lukes, TOR, OF (Yahoo: 4%, ESPN: 3%) - Lukes is having a delightful Canadian summer -- he's finished with a top-100 APR in five of his last seven periods, including two in the top-50. He rarely starts vs LHPs, but Lukes won't have to worry about that in Week 21, as the Blue Jays aren't scheduled to face any of the wrong-handers in their six road games against fairly bad pitchers (@PIT, @MIA).

Drake Baldwin, ATL, C (Yahoo: 28%, ESPN: 15%) - We've said it for weeks (months?) -- if there aren't many left-handed starters on the schedule to send him to the bench, Baldwin is an easy plug-and-play catcher stream. Baldwin and the Braves have six games at home in Week 21 (vs CHW, vs NYM), with only one LHP and three bad White Sox starters on the docket.

I mean, hey, we wish he started vs LHPs, but when you stink against lefties, you stink against lefties...Oh, as a quick aside, here's how Baldwin has fared in limited actions vs LHPs this season:

Ben Rice, NYY, C (Yahoo: 33%, ESPN: 23%) - Rice remains relevant ever since he regained catcher eligibility, as just the sheer number of PAs he's picking up is enough to compile comparable catcher points. He's now started 10 straight games, and 15 of the last 17. He'll get six games in Week 21 (@TB, vs BOS), with only one scheduled against one of his fellow lefties.

Next Choices

Ryan Jeffers, MIN, C (Yahoo: 21%, ESPN: 9%) - Jeffers remains wildly inconsistent, often putting up one or two great weeks, followed by a week or two of disasters. For example, he was the #23 hitter in Week 19, but finished with >260 APR in Weeks 17, 18, and 20. But bad pitching is bad pitching, and Jeffers should see a lot of it in two series with the A's and White Sox.

Carson Kelly, CHC, C (Yahoo: 25%, ESPN: 45%) - It turns out Kelly wasn't actually the MVP-esque hitter he was cosplaying as earlier in the season, but he should continue to pile up a ton of PAs with Miguel Amaya headed right back to the IL (sprained ankle) after returning from an oblique injury. Kelly only has Reese McGuire to compete with for playing time in a week where the Cubs get eight games (vs MIL, @LAA), and that means 25 PA are likely his for the taking.

Mitch Garver, SEA, C (Yahoo: 0%, ESPN: 0%) - You're not going to see a lot of playing time when you're Cal Raleigh's backup, but the Mariners are still occasionally working him in at DH, and almost always against left-handed starters. In Week 21, Garver should see plenty of action, with Seattle scheduled to face lefties in five of their six games (@PHI, vs ATH)

Victor Caratini, HOU, C (Yahoo: 5%, ESPN: 2%) - Caratini has a nice, three-week stretch, but has now been back in the funk for the last month, averaging just a 263 APR over his last four periods. But the Astros have seven games on the road (@DET, @BAL), with three of them coming vs LHP -- Caratini has a 17% Brl% and 48% Hard Hit% vs LHP this season, with a .377 xwOBA and .562 xSLG.
