Recent Fantasy Football Rookie News
Omarion Hampton, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton played only the first series in the Chargers' last-second 23-22 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Showing his burst and tackle-breaking ability on limited touches, the 22-year-old rushed for 17 yards on just two carries. The first-round pick from UNC, who posted 1,660 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns in 12 games his junior year, is rising up draft boards as veteran RB Najee Harris' (eye) availability for the start of the season is still unknown.
Bhayshul Tuten, Jacksonville Jaguars
According to Travis Holmes of Big Cat Country, Jaguars rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten appears to be pulling ahead in the RB competition during team practices. Holmes noted that Tuten "looks like a hard man to take off the field." While veteran running backs Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby have been given more opportunities with the first team during training camp, the fourth-round rookie has been making a strong case to take the starting job.
During his preseason debut, Tuten ran the ball six times and picked up 24 yards and a rushing score. Even though he was deployed as the No. 3 running back in this game, seeing him flash more potential during practice should quickly push him up the depth chart. Last season, Etienne had a disappointing campaign, posting a career-low 3.7 YPC. For now, Tuten remains an intriguing late-round target in drafts as he could slowly take over the starting job as the season progresses.
Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan (hamstring) was "working off to the side with no pads" during the team's practice on Tuesday, according to Alex Zietlow of The Charlotte Observer. McMillan is reportedly dealing with a minor hamstring injury that could keep him out of the team's final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday. Assuming McMillan is healthy for the start of the regular season, he has a good chance to emerge as the clear number one target in Carolina right away. He profiles as a low-end WR2 in fantasy with significant upside.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Washington Commanders
Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt ran for 46 yards on 11 carries and added two receptions for no gain against the Bengals. Croskey-Merritt, more commonly known as "Bill", followed the hole that was beautifully created by the Washington offensive line and tight end John Bates before showing off his explosiveness in the open field to finish for a 27-yard touchdown. He was mostly stuffed on the rest of his carries as the game went on, and as Washington's reserve offensive lineman came into the game.
His stock is on the rise, however, with the recent news surrounding Brian Robinson's future in Washington. The glowing reports coming out of training camp point to Croskey-Merritt having a sizable role in Washington's backfield this season. While Croskey-Merritt is the most dynamic runner on the team, veterans like Austin Ekeler, Chris Rodriguez, and possibly Jeremy McNichols are well-regarded with the coaching staff as well and will likely form a committee in the short term. Attached to Jayden Daniels and an offense that should score plenty of points, he is a great upside bet to make in your drafts.
Isaiah Bond, Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns have signed rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond to a three-year, $3.018 million fully guaranteed contract. After garnering a good deal of buzz in the early stages of draft season, Bond went undrafted after being accused of sexual assault in April. The case was no-billed last week by a grand jury, and Bond faces no further criminal charges. Bond announced shortly after this ruling that he would be signing with the Browns, and his deal became official.
Having missed almost all of training camp, it will be difficult for him to carve out any sort of immediate role as a rookie, but the guaranteed signing would suggest that the Browns have a plan for him. Bond has always displayed impressive game speed, and he is worth stashing in dynasty leagues.
