ANALYSIS: After operating as James Conner's clear No. 2 option and being viewed as nothing more than a handcuff during his rookie season, Trey Benson has begun to see his workload increase drastically in 2025.
During their Week 1 contest against the New Orleans Saints, Benson took on a surprisingly large role, logging eight carries for 69 yards and adding one reception (on one target) for six yards. However, in Week 2, Benson was able to prove that this workload was not a fluke.
Driving their victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon, Benson took three carries for 14 yards and added 40 yards on four receptions (six targets). During each of these games, Benson logged at least 20 offensive snaps. Benson only eclipsed 20+ offensive snaps in one contest as a rookie.
More importantly, the presumed workhorse, Conner, has only logged 59% of the team's total RB snaps, which suggests this backfield is more of a committee.
While Conner will continue to limit Benson's workload for now, he projects to carry flex value heading into Week 3 and a high-value handcuff as he could enter RB1 territory if Conner were to miss time later in the season. He is a must-roster player going forward.
