2026 Genesis Invitational betting and fantasy golf preview with key stats, Riviera Country Club course breakdown, field analysis, and TV times for this week’s PGA Tour event.
The PGA TOUR heads to Pacific Palisades, California, this week for The Genesis Invitational, the second Signature Event of the season. As a Signature Event, the tournament features an elevated purse and 700 FedEx Cup points, a limited field of 72 players, and no cut. The event returns to Riviera Country Club after being played at Torrey Pines last season due to the Los Angeles area wildfires.
The last time The Genesis Invitational was contested at Riviera, Hideki Matsuyama captured the title and now returns to defend it. Matsuyama has been in outstanding form to begin the season, posting four consecutive top 15 finishes, including a runner-up at the WM Phoenix Open, where he fell in a playoff to Christopher Gotterup.

Course/Tournament History
The Genesis Invitational, originally known as the Los Angeles Open, is one of the longest-running and most prestigious events on the PGA TOUR. First played in 1926 at the Los Angeles Country Club, the tournament rotated between Wilshire Country Club, Hillcrest Country Club, and Rancho Park Golf Course before settling at Riviera Country Club as its permanent home in 1973, with the lone exception of last year, when the event was relocated to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires.
Throughout its history, the tournament has undergone several name and sponsorship changes. It became the Nissan Open in 1995, the Northern Trust Open in 2008, and the Genesis Open in 2017. In 2020, the event was elevated to Invitational status, which reduced the field size and increased the purse, further solidifying its reputation as one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR schedule.
Riviera Country Club has been a cornerstone of this event’s history, hosting the tournament since 1929 and serving as the venue for 59 editions, though not consecutively. Since 1999, Riviera has been the exclusive home of the tournament, further cementing its place as one of the PGA TOUR’s most iconic stops.
The club’s championship pedigree extends well beyond this event. Riviera is scheduled to host the golf competition during the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and will also welcome the 2031 U.S. Open. In addition, the venue has previously hosted three major championships: the 1948 U.S. Open, the 1983 PGA Championship, and the 1995 PGA Championship, adding to its rich and historic legacy.

Course Guide/ Scorecard
Notable Par 3s
The four par 3’s range from 166 to 273 yards. In 2024, No. 6 was the only par 3 to have a scoring average under par.
Hole 4 | Par 3 | 273 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 3.211 (Difficulty Rank 3)
The first real test on the front nine comes at the par-3 fourth. Wind conditions can make a hard tee shot nearly impossible when the gusts are blowing. The green, guarded by a large bunker in the front, slopes severely from right to left. Long putts are common on the fourth hole.
Hole 6 | Par 3 | 199 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 2.843 (Difficulty Rank 13)
In some rounds, the sixth hole is a straightforward par 3. In other rounds, it shows its teeth. The two-tiered green is enough to cause problems for players, as landing your tee shot on the right level is of utmost importance. Add in the difficulty of the island bunker. Positioned perfectly in the center of the two-tiered putting surface, avoid having to putt around the bunker in the middle of the green.
Notable Par 4s
There are 11 par 4s at Riviera Country Club, with the majority of those holes ranging between 450 and 500 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest par 4 on the course two years ago was No. 12. Hole No. 18 has been stretched to 499 yards this year, up 24 yards from 2024.
Hole 15 | Par 4 | 487 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.328 (Difficulty Rank 2)
The tee shot requires a power fade to turn the corner of the doglegged fairway. The approach shot is made more difficult down the stretch as the hole plays into the setting sun later in the day. A two-tiered green can give players trouble even once they find the putting surface. While it’s unlikely players find a birdie on the 15th to win the tournament, a bogey on the 15th can lose the tournament.
Hole 18 | Par 4 | 499 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.079 (Difficulty Rank 6)
Riviera starts with an iconic hole, and it ends in the same fashion. The 18th is one of golf’s most unique and recognizable finishing holes. A blind tee shot from drastically below the level of the fairway means players must carry the hill to reach safely. If the drive can also turn a corner at the top of the hill, the approach shot becomes much easier. The natural amphitheater below the clubhouse provides the ultimate stadium-style finish to the round and tournament.
Notable Par 5s
There are three par 5s on the course: No. 1, No. 11, and No. 17. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2024. Hole No. 1 was the easiest hole on the course two years ago, with a scoring average of 0.768 below par.
Hole 1 | Par 5 | 503 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.232 (Difficulty Rank 18)
Sitting in the shadow of the clubhouse, the first tee is elevated 75 feet above the fairway and tempts players with what appears to be a wide fairway. Big hitters beware, the driver is too much club on this opening par 5. Most players choose an iron off the tee to set up their approach shot. Annually, the first hole plays as the easiest on the course.
Hole 17 | Par 5 | 590 Yards | 2024 Stroke Average: 4.61 (Difficulty Rank 16)
While it might be the longest hole at Riviera, the 17th plays into the strength of the modern TOUR player. A powerful drive followed by a long iron makes the green reachable in two. Being on the putting surface with a chance for an eagle provides insurance from the two-tiered green that slopes from back to front, creating difficult downhill putts. If you can play from below the hole location, your chances of scoring increase significantly.

Key Statistics
As the Genesis Invitational returns to Riviera Country Club, understanding how this course compares to PGA Tour averages can help identify which players are best suited for success. Here’s how Riviera Country Club stacks up statistically:
| Statistics | PGA Tour Average | Riviera Country Club |
| Driving Distance (Yards) | 291.9 | 293.7 |
| Driving Accuracy | 60.5% | 50.5% |
| GIR Percentage | 66.1% | 56.4% |
| Avg GIR Prox to Hole (Feet) | 37.2 | 41.8 |
| Scrambling Percentage | 58.9% | 63.5% |
| 3 Putt Avoidance Percentage | 2.83% | 2.65% |
Strokes Gained: Off the Tee
- Unlike shorter positional courses, Riviera rewards players who can combine distance with controlled shot shaping. The fairways are tree-lined and strategically bunkered, placing a premium on both power and precision. Players who can gain strokes off the tee by carrying fairway bunkers and setting up preferred approach angles historically have a significant edge at this venue.
Good Drive Percentage
- While distance matters at Riviera, simply hitting fairways is not enough. Good Drive Percentage, which measures fairways hit or greens reached after a missed fairway, is a more telling metric here. The course allows some room off the tee, but positioning is critical to avoid blocked angles into firm, well-protected greens. Players who consistently give themselves clean looks into greens tend to separate from the field.
Strokes Gained: Approach
- Approach play is arguably the most important statistic at Riviera. The greens are Poa annua and rank as the fourth-largest on the PGA TOUR, but they feature significant slope and complex bunker protection. Many approach shots come from the 150 to 200 yard range, placing an emphasis on mid to long iron play.
Strokes Gained: Around the Green
- Riviera’s tightly mown run-off areas and deep greenside bunkers demand a sharp short game. Players will inevitably miss greens due to firm conditions and challenging pin locations, making scrambling a key component of success.
Strokes Gained: Putting (Poa)
- The greens at Riviera are Poa annua, which can become bumpy later in the day. Comfort on Poa surfaces is a major advantage, particularly in a tournament that typically features one of the strongest fields of the season. Players with a proven track record putting on West Coast Poa greens often see positive results here.
Par 4 Scoring: 400-500 Yards
- The majority of par 4s at Riviera fall between 400 and 500 yards, requiring a balanced combination of driving and mid-iron precision. Several of these holes demand specific shot shapes off the tee, followed by challenging approaches into sloped greens.
Par 5 Scoring: 550-6000 Yards
- Two of the three par 5s at Riviera measure between 550 and 600 yards. While reachable for longer hitters, these holes still require thoughtful risk-reward decisions. Positioning off the tee is crucial to set up potential eagle chances, and players who capitalize on these scoring opportunities can gain meaningful ground on the field.
Bogey Avoidance
- Riviera is not a birdie fest. With thick, rough, penal bunkering and demanding green complexes, mistakes can quickly compound. Players who limit bogeys and avoid big numbers, particularly on the difficult closing stretch, tend to rise up the leaderboard.
Scrambling Gained
- Greens in Regulation percentages at Riviera are typically lower than the TOUR average, meaning players will be forced to rely on their short game. Scrambling efficiency becomes critical, as saving par after a missed green can maintain momentum and prevent rounds from unraveling.
Proximity Gained: 150-200Yards
- Riviera features a high volume of approach shots from 150 to 200 yards. Players who excel from this range with mid to long irons can generate more birdie looks and separate themselves from the field.
