2026 Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches betting and fantasy golf preview with key stats, PGA National Resort (The Champion) course breakdown, field analysis, and TV times for this week’s PGA Tour event.
The PGA TOUR heads to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, this week for the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, marking the start of the Florida Swing. Each of the next four events will take place in the Sunshine State.
The Cognizant Classic features a 123-player field with a cut after 36 holes, unlike the past two tournaments, which were Signature Events. While the field is not as strong as those previous stops, it creates plenty of opportunity on the betting side, especially if the longshot trend continues. Two of the last four winners here opened at pre-tournament odds of 100 to 1 or longer, proving this event can reward bettors willing to take a shot down the board.

Course Guide/ Scorecard
PGA National consistently ranks as one of the most demanding tests on the PGA TOUR. While it does not overwhelm players with length, it more than makes up for that with precision demands and penalty areas that punish even slight mistakes.
The course’s primary defense is water. Hazards come into play on 15 of the 18 holes, creating constant pressure from the opening tee shot to the final putt. Even though the layout is relatively short by modern standards, the presence of water often forces players to club down off the tee or lay back on approach shots to avoid disaster. It is a strategic test more than a power test.
Wind is another major factor. With the course exposed and typical Florida gusts in play, club selection becomes critical, especially on approach shots. Crosswinds and swirling breezes can quickly turn a comfortable mid-iron into a guessing game, and misjudgments are often penalized immediately.
The closing stretch, famously known as the Bear Trap, will once again command attention this week. Holes 15, 16, and 17 form one of the most difficult three-hole stretches on TOUR.
Notable Par 3s
The four par 3’s range from 175 to 226 yards. In 2025, No. 17 was the only par 3 to have a scoring average under par.
Hole 15 | Par 3 | 179 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 3.149 (Difficulty Rank 2)
This is the start of the ‘Bear Trap,’ and while it’s not the longest of the Par 3’s on the course, it is the toughest, playing 0.149 strokes over par last year. Players will try to hit an iron into a diagonal green that slopes towards the water on the right. A bunker protects the back of the green, which has proven to be a challenge in the past, given the limited landing area.
Notable Par 4s
There are 11 par 4s on The Champion Course at PGA National, with the majority of those holes ranging between 400 and 450 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest par 4 on the course last year was No. 6. Hole No. 2 has been stretched to 484 yards this year, up 20 yards from the last edition.
Hole 6 | Par 4 | 479 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.259 (Difficulty Rank 1)
This is a long par-4 playing 479 yards that is normally a par-5 for members. Last year, this was the toughest par-4 on the course, playing 0.259 strokes over par. Off the tee, it’s extremely narrow with water to the left and fairway bunkers on the right. From there, players will try to hit a shot into a small green that, you guessed it, is surrounded by more water and bunkers. The green is a three-tiered green, which can leave some difficult putts depending on the pin location for the day.
Hole 16 | Par 4 | 479 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.083 (Difficulty Rank 6)
Off the tee, players must carry water that runs down the right side while avoiding bunkers positioned along the left. The landing area feels tight, especially with the wind often swirling through this exposed stretch. Players are typically left with a mid to long iron into a small, firm green that sits dangerously close to the water. The putting surface offers little margin for error, and anything slightly offline can find the hazard or leave a difficult recovery. Wind plays a major role in club selection, and misjudging it has unraveled many scorecards over the years.
Notable Par 5s
There are three par 5s on the course: No. 3, No. 10, and No. 18. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2025. Hole No. 3 was the easiest hole on the course last year, with a scoring average of 0.606 below par.
Hole 18 | Par 5 | 592 Yards | 2025 Stroke Average: 4.491 (Difficulty Rank 16)
It’s a double dogleg par 5 that first goes left and then right. Off the tee, players will have water and bunkers along both sides. From there, it gets a little more difficult as they have to weigh the risk vs reward for their second shot. The green is nestled between numerous bunkers and water, which can come into play if they flair one out left.
Featured/ Signature Hole(s): 15-17 (Bear Trap)
Key Statistics
As the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches returns to PGA National Resort (The Champion Course), understanding how this course compares to PGA Tour averages can help identify which players are best suited for success. Here’s how PGA National Resort (The Champion Course) stacks up statistically:
| Statistics | PGA Tour Average | PGA National Resort (The Champion Course) |
| Driving Distance (Yards) | 291.9 | 281.4 |
| Driving Accuracy | 60.5% | 60.0% |
| GIR Percentage | 66.1% | 65.9% |
| Avg GIR Prox to Hole (Feet) | 37.2 | 36.4 |
| Scrambling Percentage | 58.9% | 56.3% |
| 3 Putt Avoidance Percentage | 2.83% | 2.75% |
Strokes Gained: Off the Tee
-
The Champion Course demands accuracy and intelligent placement. Water hazards come into play on 15 holes, including the infamous Bear Trap stretch. Players who consistently find fairways and avoid penalty areas will gain a significant edge. This is a course where discipline off the tee outweighs aggression.
Strokes Gained: Approach
-
Approach play is critical at PGA National. The greens are Bermudagrass and are well protected by water and bunkers. Many approach shots fall in the 150 to 200 yard range, putting emphasis on strong mid to long iron play. Players who consistently hit quality approaches and control distance will generate the limited birdie opportunities this course allows.
Strokes Gained: Around the Green
- Greens in Regulation percentages are typically below TOUR average at PGA National. With shaved runoff areas and water lurking, scrambling becomes a necessity. Players who can get up and down consistently will separate themselves on a layout that punishes missed greens.
Strokes Gained: Putting (Bermuda)
- The greens at PGA National are Bermudagrass and can become firm and grainy, especially in windy afternoon conditions. Comfort putting on Southeastern Bermuda surfaces is a major advantage.
Strokes Gained: Total (High Water Danger)
- With water hazards in play on most holes, this becomes one of the most penal venues on TOUR. Players who excel in difficult scoring environments and avoid penalty strokes tend to rise to the top.
Par 4 Scoring: 400-450 Yards
- The majority of par 4s at PGA National fall between 400 and 450 yards. These holes demand precise driving followed by sharp mid-iron approaches into sloped greens. Strong par 4 scoring in this range is one of the clearest statistical indicators of success at the Cognizant Classic.
Par 5 Scoring: 550-600 Yards
-
Two of the three par 5s measure between 550 and 600 yards. They are reachable for longer hitters but still demand thoughtful decision-making due to water hazards. Players who capitalize on these limited scoring chances gain valuable ground in a tournament that historically plays difficult.
Birdie or Better Percentage
- Scoring has shifted slightly in recent years. The winning scores were 19 under in 2025 and 17 under in 2024, compared to 14 under, 10 under, 12 under, and six under in previous editions. While still demanding, recent setups have allowed slightly more scoring.
Bogey Avoidance
- PGA National Resort (The Champion Course) is not a birdie fest. With thick, rough, penal bunkering and demanding green complexes, mistakes can quickly compound. Players who limit bogeys and avoid big numbers, particularly on the difficult closing stretch, tend to rise up the leaderboard.
Proximity Gained: 150-200 Yards
-
A high percentage of approach shots come from 150 to 200 yards. Players who excel from this range can create more birdie looks and avoid the big numbers that lurk around PGA National.
