LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2023 Washington DC

The LIV Golf League will hold this week’s event at Trump National Golf Club Washington, D.C. It will be the first of three events played this season on Trump golf courses. Trump National is located in Potomac Falls, Virginia and is rated a top ten course in the state of Virginia. This week also marks the halfway point of the LIV Golf season.

LIV enters the week with some momentum following Brooks Koepka's win at last week’s PGA Championship. LIV’s last event in Tulsa was their highest-attended US event in league history and it will be interesting to see the turnout for the league’s first event in the D.C. area. While projected ticket sale numbers have not been released, there is optimism that the tournament will get a big turnout since the D.C. area does not have an annual professional event played there.

The event will be played Friday-Sunday and will air on the CW Network in 100% of U.S. markets, as well as the CW App and LIV Golf Plus. Globally the event will be broadcasted in over 160 international territories Live and On-Demand, free of charge, via LIV Golf Plus.

LIV Golf DC Course Breakdown

Below is the official round one scorecard provided by LIV Golf.

Hole 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Out

Yardage 507 197 369 406 571 185 462 443 431 3594

Donald Trump purchased the course in 2009 for $13 million and invested $25 million into the property for renovations. Trump hired renowned architect Tom Fazio to lead the design. Renovations for the Championship and Riverview course were completed in 2015. Trump National Golf Club will play as a 7479-yard par 72 this week, featuring holes from both courses. It is a links-style course with bentgrass fairways and greens.

This will be one of the longest courses LIV has played on so far and Brooks Koepka went as far as to call it a “bombers paradise.” I believe that length off the tee will provide a significant advantage for players this week. Koepka also said about the course “It’s going to be a good golf course in good shape. All of Trump’s courses are phenomenal and fun to play, and I think they’re also quite tough, too.”

I am expecting a long and difficult test for the players this week. On top of navigating the length of the course, water comes into play on seven holes.  I think there is the potential to see some big numbers out there. The winning score at Trump Bedminster last year was -11 and I believe we will see a similar winning score this week. I will be looking at players who play long and tough golf courses well, putting an added emphasis on distance off the tee. I think it may also be a good idea to look at the leaderboard from the LIV Bedminster event last year and see who has a history of success at Trump courses.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - DC

PGA Championship hangover? At the very least, I would avoid Brooks Koepka this week. He admitted on Pardon My Take podcast that he was going to be doing a lot of celebrating at the Panthers and Heat games this week and that he wasn’t expecting to be competitive over the weekend. Another guy I believe could be affected is Bryson Dechambeau. Although popular this week, Bryson entered the final round of the PGA Championship inside the top five on the leaderboard and grinded it out for 72 holes. I believe that takes a lot out of a player mentally. I’m not sure Bryson will be ready to go out and win a golf tournament just five days later.

Patrick Reed +1800

Patrick Reed is playing some great golf right now. I believe he had a great performance at the PGA Championship to take into this week. He played well enough to finish T18 but didn’t have the Sunday stress and mental workload of trying to win a major championship. I believe that Reed will come in confident that he is in good form, but still mentally fresh and ready to go.

In addition to form, Reed has a history of playing long golf courses extremely well. Although he is not a bomber, he has consistently found success in his career on longer courses. I think back to his last PGA Tour win at the Farmers Insurance Open where he was able to grind it out on a long and difficult golf course and collect a win. He also played extremely well at Trump Bedminster last year, having a first-round lead and being within a few shots entering the final round.

Reed has not finished outside of the top thirteen in any of his last four LIV starts and feels due to finally win an event after many close calls. He has five top-five finishes in twelve LIV starts without a win. Who better to pick up a win in the nation’s capital on Memorial Day Weekend than Captain America?

Sergio Garcia +2500

US Open bound Sergio Garcia! The Spaniard spent Monday qualifying down in Texas for this year’s US Open and got in with a birdie on the final hole. Garcia was not eligible for last week’s PGA Championship, marking the first time he failed to qualify for a major in 23 years. I have no doubt that it left Sergio hungry and with a sour taste in his mouth. After qualifying for the US Open, Garcia knows he will need to be sharp if he wants to increase his chances of qualifying for majors moving forward. I believe we will see a very focused Sergio in the upcoming months.

On top of the motivation factor, Sergio is in good form. Just less than a month ago he lost in a playoff to Talor Gooch in the LIV Singapore event. The thing that I’ve noticed with Sergio lately is that he has figured something out with his putting. He has always been a phenomenal ball striker, but the putter has let him down consistently over his career. The last couple of times we’ve seen him, this hasn’t been the case. The former major champion made a clutch eight-foot putt on the 54th hole in LIV Singapore to force a playoff and he made a clutch six-foot putt in the final hole of US Open qualifying to get him into the event.

In terms of course fit, I love Sergio here. He has the distance to compete at a long course like this and anytime I hear a course described as links style, I think it favors a player like him. He also has had some success at Trump golf courses, finishing inside the top-ten in last year’s LIV Bedminster event and finishing T3 twice in his PGA career at Trump Doral.

Matthew Wolff +4000

Wolff enters off the heels of three straight duds in LIV Golf events. After being one of the most consistent players in the league over the past year, Wolff has failed to finish inside the top-30 in any of his last three starts. That said, I like the course fit a lot better for him this week. The distance of the course should allow him to take advantage of being one of the longer players out there.

In addition, I can’t help but think of the Sunday performance he had at last year’s LIV Bedminster event. Coming out of seemingly nowhere, Wolff went crazy on Sunday and made a push up the leaderboard. His chip in on hole 17 for birdie had him within two strokes of the lead before Stenson made a clutch birdie down the stretch to end it.

Wolff has so much talent and I know it was difficult to not be a part of last week’s PGA Championship after finishing inside the top-5 at Harding Park in 2020. He has formed a good friendship with Brooks Koepka over the past year and I think witnessing Koepka win after all he had been through the past couple of years will help light a spark in Wolff.
