Felix Hernandez Needs To Have Expectations Tempered
7 years agoSeattle Mariners right-handed starter Felix Hernandez will enter his 14th season coming off the most injury-marred year of his career. His 16 starts was the lowest total of his career since his rookie season in 2005 and went 6-5 with a 4.36 ERA. The numbers last year were not pretty; a 1.29 WHIP, 86 hits and 17 home runs allowed in only 86 2/.3 innings. Hernandez was on and off the disabled list several times with shoulder bursitis and never looked like the 'King Felix' of old. The 200-plus strikeout seasons are a thing of the past for the former ace and his reputation currently out-weighs his potential fantasy production. Hernandez, if healthy, is certainly capable of providing a solid middle of the rotation presence on an unproven Mariners starting staff. But expectations should be tempered at this point of his career and his ceiling should be in the 10-12 win range with a sub-3.00 ERA for 2018.
