RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Waste Management Phoenix Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Waste Management Open. Here are some under the radar plays and picks for this week's event.

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a second season. In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Thanks for joining us again for our RotoBaller OAD Staff Picks! While none of us had Marc Leishman at the Farmers last week, our new team member Josh Bennett did nail Jon Rahm and his runner-up effort that was worth a huge payday of over $800k! It was enough to give Josh a commanding lead in our contest through three tournaments. My selection of Tiger Woods went well with a solid T9 finish, while Spencer's choice of Hideki Matsuyama underwhelmed with a T45. So, my old buddy Spencer and I are already in a bit of catch-up mode against a red-hot Josh. Let's see if we can make up any ground at the Waste Management Phoenix Open this week!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections

Joe Nicely - Jon Rahm

Alternate -  Rickie Fowler

It's easy to get frustrated in season-long OAD contests and second-guessing yourself is common-place. For last week's Farmers, it came down to Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm for me. I ended up going with Tiger for a couple of different reasons - and though he played well and logged a top-10 - it feels like I made a horrible decision. One of the reasons I ultimately went with Tiger was that I've had my eye on Rahm for this event for some time.

'Rahmbo' is an Arizona State product and has been a monster on this TPC Scottsdale layout. In four career WMPO starts he's never finished outside the top-16 in this event. He heads to Phoenix in beast mode, on the heels of a runner-up finish last week and a string of very strong international performances. His win equity is high - I'm seeing him listed at around 6/1 at most sportsbooks, which is ridiculous - so while I'm frustrated that I didn't have Rahm last week, I'm really excited to be able to fire him up at the Waste Management. Don't get me wrong, top-10s are nice, but we need some wins to keep pace throughout a OAD season and I think Jon Rahm has a great chance to grab a victory this week. - Joe Nicely

Yearly Earnings - $799,750

Yearly Cuts Made - 3/3

Spencer Aguiar - Webb Simpson

Alternate - Corey Conners

I usually wouldn't expect to be down over one million dollars to Josh and nearly $700,000 to Joe after beginning the year three for three in cuts made, but my miserable weekend rounds mixed with their hot starts already has me playing catch-up to get myself back in the running.

While I am happy to have Webb Simpson available, I think we might be shocked at the number of entrants that use him this weekend. If we exclude his aberrational performance at TPC Scottsdale in 2018, the American brings with him six consecutive top-20 results here, including a second-place finish in 2017.

I believe your fair share of participants will still save Simpson for the Wyndham Championship, but I don't view this as a week to get extremely contrarian, especially if you are in need of a payday to get yourself back into the thick of things. There are about 10 options on the board that will all receive support, which makes leveraging ownership impossible. There will be other weeks to do that, so all I can do is hope that Simpson can provide me with a payday to stop the bleeding.  -Spencer Aguiar

Yearly Earnings - $113,739

Yearly Cuts Made - 3/3

Josh Bennett - Hideki Matsuyama

Alternate - Gary Woodland

I made it three weeks before trying to pick someone I had already picked, not looking great when there’s still the whole season left in front of us, but we’ll push forward anyway. I think Hideki will probably be the most owned OAD pick in every OAD pool everywhere, but I’ll ride that super chalk train this week. Sometimes you can’t overthink things and just have to pick the obvious choice. For what it’s worth though, I TRIED to move off of him to Webb, but Joe decided to enforce the rules and not let me use him again.

Other than being one of the worst putters on this planet, Hideki checks all the boxes for this event and as long as he doesn’t withdraw again he should put up another good finish this year. Hideki is one of the longer hitters on tour which will allow him to cut off a lot of these longer par 4’s and give him a chance to do what he does best from shorter distances than a lot of the field. Hideki is one of the best with irons in hand and even he knows it. Seemingly any approach that misses the hole by more than 10 feet is frustrating to him (look up what the average proximity is on tour from any distance and you’ll see how crazy high his expectations are). The greens are large here but his approach game should put him much closer to the hole than others and put a little less stress on his putter. He also scrambles extremely well which will be important since these fairways are hard to hit, approaches come from longer distances, and a lot of greens will be missed.

His record here is well known by now, two wins and a second place in the last five years, so something about this place and atmosphere must bring out the best in him. He’s also coming in playing really well with five finishes in the top 16 in his last six starts. Looking for him to continue his good play here and get me some cushion in first place. – Josh Bennett
