Savion Hiter to Open Season as Michigan's RB2
Michigan running back Savion Hiter will be the team's No. 2 running back behind Jordan Marshall, "barring anything unforeseen," according to Anthony Broome of The Wolverine. The true freshman was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 overall running back prospect in the 2026 class, per Rivals.com. "What stands out about Savion is he just works so hard all the time," offensive coordinator Jason Beck said. "There's no such thing as not full speed with that kid. And my experience is when you have freshmen like that that are that way, they have a chance to play early." The Virginia native averaged a whopping 13.9 yards per carry as a senior and "already has the body of a college veteran." Marshall, who rushed for 932 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, will handle lead-back duties, but Hiter could push to make this more of a committee backfield in 2026.

Texas running back Hollywood Smothers (lower-body) is expected to be a game-time decision for Saturday's SEC clash against Tennessee, according to On3's Pete Nakos. Smothers has been listed as questionable this week with a lower-body injury and did not practice on Thursday. Smothers starred at NC State last season, totaling 1,128 yards and seven touchdowns before transferring to Texas. In three games with the Longhorns, he has rushed 41 times for 198 yards and two scores, adding seven receptions for 54 yards and scoring a receiving touchdown. Hauss Hejny Doubtful For Saturday
Colorado State quarterback Hauss Hejny (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Saturday's game against UTSA with a hamstring injury. The sophomore quarterback transferred from Oklahoma State to Colorado State in the portal this offseason and has gotten off to a great start. Through three games, he has completed 64% of his 73 pass attempts for 619 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one interception, while adding 13 carries for 128 rushing yards and one touchdown. Hejny hurt his hamstring in the first quarter of Week 3 in a 41-23 loss to BYU. Redshirt freshman K'saan Farrar immediately relieved Hejny in the game but struggled mightily and was eventually replaced by redshirt sophomore Darius Curry.

Three Schools Trying To Join American Conference
Miami (OH), James Madison, and UConn have reached out to the American Conference about joining. At this time, it's reported that the American Conference is not expanding despite a reported offer of $30 million to $40 million from Miami (Ohio). UConn is seeking only a football membership to the conference while keeping its other sports as is. Miami (Ohio) and JMU are seeking full memberships into the conference. The American Conference signed a $1 billion media rights deal with ESPN in 2019, which is significantly larger than the deals of most other Group of Six conferences. It's unclear what the next steps are for these schools to gain entry into the American Conference, or whether the American Conference is interested in expanding.

DJ Lagway Set to Return on Saturday
Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway (ankle) has missed the last two games, but is listed as probable for the Big 12 opener against Colorado. Lagway suffered an ankle injury in the Week 1 loss to Auburn, but played through it. He finished the game with 333 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The Bears won comfortably over Prairie View A&M and Louisiana Tech over the past two weeks. Lagway will make his home debut and Big 12 debut at noon on Saturday, and is startable in fantasy leagues against a Buffaloes' defense that surrendered 41 points to Northwestern last weekend.

Hollywood Smothers Misses Practice Thursday
Texas running back Hollywood Smothers (undisclosed) missed Thursday's practice and remains listed as questionable on the Longhorns' injury report. Smothers has led the Longhorns' backfield thus far with 198 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It appears that his status is trending the wrong way for Saturday's noon kickoff against Tennessee. If in fact Smothers can't go, Raleek Brown and Derrek Cooper should see an extended look in his place. Brown has 129 yards and two touchdowns on the season, while Cooper returned from an injury of his own last week to run for 44 yards and a touchdown in the win over UTSA.
