Fantasy Football Outlooks for Rookie Wide Receivers

Travis Hunter, Jacksonville Jaguars

New Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback hybrid Travis Hunter was selected No. 2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He'll join forces with one of the brightest offensive minds in the league, newly-hired Jags head coach Liam Coen. While Coen befuddlingly doesn't get much credit for his masterpiece of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense in 2024, he helped quarterback Baker Mayfield to his best career year by far, and produced four elite fantasy football players (Mayfield, WRs Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, and RB Bucky Irving).

Thus, it's hard not to think that Coen can help quarterback Trevor Lawrence have a monster year, and thus both receivers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Hunter. Hunter is an interesting case because he'll almost certainly play defense. Yet, Coen has already stated that he'll start out playing mostly at wideout. To think that Coen, an offensive-minded coach, wants to take an elite talent like Hunter as a WR and put him on defense most of the time seems preposterous. Expect a huge year out of Hunter. He should be a league winner in all formats.

Jayden Higgins, Houston Texans

Rookie Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins is stepping into a golden opportunity. Higgins was drafted with the No. 2 pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. With wide receivers Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs dealing with injury and departing in free agency, respectively, the Texans had a massive void to fill opposite No. 1 option Nico Collins. Like Collins, Higgins is a 6-foot-4 athletic freak. He ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and provides the Texans with a combination of a deep threat and red zone target.

Higgins was relatively productive over the last couple of seasons in the NCAA. In 2024, he recorded 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns on 87 receptions. He is a volume king with serious touchdown upside. The Texans' wide receiver room is crowded, but Higgins is clearly the second-most talented among the bunch. Additionally, new acquisitions Jaylin Noel and Christian Kirk are slot players and should not compete with Higgins for playing time. As such, Higgins could be the No. 2 option for a good quarterback in C.J. Stroud in Week 1.

Having a player like Collins on the other side of the field will open lanes for Higgins at every level. This is a player who could easily finish as a WR2 this season. Considering that he is currently being drafted outside of the top 50 at the position and RotoBaller has him ranked as WR76, he would be an immense steal in fantasy drafts as he should be, at minimum, a flex option throughout the season.

Jaylin Noel, Houston Texans

Houston Texans rookie wide receiver Jaylin Noel inexplicably fell in the 2025 NFL Draft to deep in the third round, where he was chosen by the team that selected his former Iowa State teammate, Jayden Higgins, early in the second round. Noel's first challenge in the NFL will, unfortunately, be competing for playing time. While the team's WR1, Nico Collins, figures to easily hang on to the WR1 position and play the "X" role, Noel was more of a slot WR in college.

Houston signed Christian Kirk, a slot wide receiver, in the 2025 offseason. Higgins' role also remains unclear, though with his size, he'll probably be asked to play on the perimeter opposite Collins. There's a scenario in which Noel doesn't get much playing time to start the season, due to the presence of the other three guys.

Additionally, if Texans offensive coordinator Nick Caley is as stupid as the now-fired Bobby Slowik was, it's possible that Noel could have another hurdle to overcome -- the team being run-heavy, no matter how inefficient the RBs are. Caley is a former pass-game coordinator, though, so that's doubtful. Noel's breakout will come late this season or early next, but expect low volume to start.

Elic Ayomanor, Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans selected Stanford wide receiver Elic Ayomanor with the 136th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Titans moved up to select the 22-year-old wideout and he steps into an environment with a good opportunity to earn early playing time. The veteran receivers ahead of him on the depth chart currently are Calvin Ridley, Tyler Lockett, and Van Jefferson. Ridley will hold down the number one role, but after him, there is a chance for a young player to emerge.

Ayomanor has the ideal blend of height, weight, and speed for an NFL wide receiver. He is a bigger body at 6'2" 210 pounds, and posted an elite 9.56 Relative Athletic Score at the combine. After redshirting his freshman season, Ayomanor posted strong numbers in two seasons at Stanford despite shaky quarterback play.

He averaged 2.12 YPRR on a higher 14.1 aDOT per PFF, which speaks to his ability to make splash plays down the field. His route tree was limited at Stanford, so that will be an area of development. But he has a chance to claim a role early in the season and establish a connection with fellow rookie Cam Ward. Ayomanor should be viewed as a deeper league target as a depth receiver with some upside.
