Joey's fantasy football outlooks of free-agent running backs who changed teams in the early days of 2026 NFL free agency. Who landed in a good/bad situation?
This year's free agent running back class wasn't the strongest. However, there were still some notable running backs up for grabs in free agency. Running backs like Kenneth Walker III, Travis Etienne Jr., Tyler Allgeier, Javonte Williams, Rico Dowdle, Isiah Pacheco, and J.K. Dobbins headlined this offseason's class.
Some of these running backs will stay on the same team for 2026. Williams never made it to free agency as the Cowboys re-signed him before the tampering period opened, and Dobbins agreed to a multi-year deal to return to the Broncos. Although those two running backs stayed with their original teams, the rest of the group did find new homes.
So, did these running backs land in good situations? What is their fantasy football outlook for the 2026 season? Let's dive into the fantasy football outlooks for all running backs on new teams.

Kenneth Walker III, Kansas City Chiefs
Walker landed in the best landing spot for his fantasy value in 2026. The former Seattle Seahawks running back signed a three-year, $45 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason. He now joins an elite Chiefs team that should feature him as the top running back in this offense. The sky is really the limit for Walker in this Kansas City scheme.
Andy Reid is one of the best offensive-minded coaches in the game. With Walker now being in his offense, he has the chance to take his fantasy game to the next level. The 25-year-old will be the unquestioned RB1 in this offense and should see the majority of snaps out of the backfield. The Chiefs didn't pay Walker $15 million a season to ride the bench.

Smart move by the Chiefs to bring in a big-play runner to ease Patrick Mahomes back into action off a torn ACL.

Therefore, the explosive running back should have his best fantasy season yet. He ranked in the top six among all running backs in juke rate, evaded tackles, explosive rating, and breakaway runs last year, and should operate as a workhorse back in Kansas City. Walker is going to be a smash pick in fantasy football drafts with a likely top-30 ADP.
Travis Etienne Jr., New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints have found their running back of the future after signing Etienne to a five-year, $52 million deal in free agency. Considering Alvin Kamara is coming off an injury-riddled, inefficient season, Etienne will replace the veteran as the top running back in this offense. Kamara averaged just 3.6 yards per carry on the ground and totaled a career low in receptions (33), receiving yards (186), and touchdowns (one) in 2025.
That's where Etienne comes in. He will be the top playmaker out of this backfield on an up-and-coming offense. He ran for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns last year en route to a RB10 PPR fantasy finish. At this point in both of their careers, Etienne is simply the more talented back. That's why fantasy managers shouldn't worry too much about Kamara.
In terms of what to expect from Etienne in fantasy this year, managers should project him to be a reliable RB2 option. He will see plenty of opportunities out of the backfield, and there is a chance that Kamara is traded/released before the 2026 season actually begins. Although Etienne might not be as strong a fantasy option as he was last year, he should provide solid RB2 numbers in this Saints offense.
Kenneth Gainwell, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Following a career year in 2025, Kenneth Gainwell received a well-deserved contract in free agency. The former Pittsburgh Steelers running back agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gainwell effectively replaces Rachaad White in that backup role behind Bucky Irving, and the 26-year-old should see consistent opportunities in this Tampa Bay backfield in 2026.
Gainwell was solid on the ground for Pittsburgh last year, but he did most of his damage in the passing game. He caught a career-high 73 passes for 486 yards and three touchdowns. His high usage in the passing game led to the former Memphis star finishing second among all running backs in fantasy points per opportunity (1.11) in 2025. With the Buccaneers paying him $7 million per season, he will be a factor in this offense.

So, fantasy managers could expect Gainwell to be a low-end RB2 in PPR formats this year. He ranked fourth in yards created per touch, fourth in production premium, and sixth in yards per touch at the position last season, and White ran the 12th-most routes among running backs in that Tampa Bay offense to go with a 88.9% catch rate in 2025. That means Gainwell should have a weekly high fantasy floor with the Buccaneers.
Tyler Allgeier, Arizona Cardinals
Allgeier landing with the Cardinals is one of the worst spots for him from a fantasy perspective. Many believed that the former Falcons running back was set to see a starting role following multiple years behind Bijan Robinson in Atlanta. In his one year as a starter back in 2022, he carried the ball 210 times for 1,035 yards (4.93 yards per carry).
Nevertheless, Allgeier arguably joins a much more complicated situation after signing a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The 25-year-old will be competing with James Conner and Trey Benson for work out of this backfield. While both Conner and Benson have dealt with their fair share of injuries in the past, Allgeier might not see consistent work out of Arizona's backfield when both running backs are healthy.
As a result, Allgeier's fantasy value is not on the rise despite leaving Atlanta in free agency. He is now part of a worse offense that has some uncertainty at quarterback, could be in a three-way backfield committee, and will be running behind a slightly worse offensive line. The new Cardinals running back won't be a consistent fantasy running back unless Conner/Benson misses time during the season.
Rico Dowdle, Pittsburgh Steelers
Dowdle has run the ball well in each of the past two seasons with two different teams. He ran for 1,079 yards and two touchdowns with the Cowboys in 2024 and rushed for 1,076 yards and six touchdowns with the Panthers in 2025. Now, Dowdle will be a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers' rushing attack after agreeing to a two-year, $12.3 million deal.
Dowdle will no doubt play a big role in Pittsburgh's offense throughout the 2026 season. He's a hard runner with potential in the receiving game. However, it's hard to see the 27-year-old being a consistent fantasy option on a week-to-week basis. He will almost certainly be in a timeshare with Jaylen Warren out of the backfield, and that timeshare could be very close to 50/50.

Ya that's who you want in this backfield.
— Frank Ammirante (@FAmmiranteTFJ) March 9, 2026
Dowdle might be the favorite to see the early-down and goal-line opportunies this year, but Warren definitely isn't going anywhere. The latter will see his fair share of chances as the "change-of-pace" back in this offense. That's why the new Steelers running back might be more of a low-end RB2 in Pittsburgh for the 2026 season.
Isiah Pacheco, Detroit Lions
Pacheco hasn't run the ball well recently. He averaged just 3.73 yards per carry on 83 attempts in 2024 and averaged 3.92 yards per carry on 118 attempts with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. His time in Kansas City has come to an end, though, as Pacheco agreed to a deal with the Detroit Lions. He will firmly replace David Montgomery as the RB2 in this Detroit backfield.
On paper, this might seem like a nice landing spot for Pacheco. Just look at what Montgomery has done in that RB2 role in this Detroit backfield over the past two years. Montgomery ran for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024 and rushed for 716 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025. Those would certainly be solid numbers for Pacheco.
But Pacheco won't see that kind of usage in this Detroit offense. More opportunities will go to Jahmyr Gibbs, and Pacheco is just not as good a runner as Montgomery. The former Chiefs running back ranked outside the top 50 among all running backs in yards per touch, evaded tackles, and fantasy points per opportunity last season. Those numbers came with Pacheco seeing the second-fewest stacked boxes.
So, Pacheco will be nothing more than a good handcuff to Gibbs in fantasy this year. He won't have any standalone value in this Lions offense.
