Preview

Brazil is historically the greatest nation in the World Cup. A record five titles, with the most recent one being earned twenty years ago in the first World Cup hosted by Asia. Currently, the Brazilian squad is ranked first according to FIFA's international rankings. Three players have totaled over 100 caps for Brazil on their World Cup roster. Dani Alves (124 caps), Neymar (121), and Thiago Silva (109) lead their nation in the quest for their sixth world championship.

Brazil lands in Group G, where Serbia, Cameroon, and Switzerland get the opportunity to upend the group's heavy favorites. Brazil begins their World Cup on Thanksgiving when they play Serbia at 2 PM EST.  If the Brazilians were to win their group, they would face the runner-up coming out of Group H. Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal could potentially meet with Brazil in the first round of the knockout stage.

After suffering a loss to third-place Belgium in the 2018 World Cup, Neymar and company seek vengeance. Additionally, Neymar has his eyes set on becoming Brazil's leading goalscorer of all time. The 30-year-old winger needs just two goals to tie Pelé's record of 77 goals representing the national team. Brazil has yet to lose in this calendar year. Their youthful attack and veteran defense have the potential to win it all this tournament.

Prediction: Champions

Who is Starting for Brazil's Squad in the 2022 World Cup?

Predicted Starting 11 (4-3-3): Alisson, Telles, Silva, Marquinhos, Alex Telles, Casemiro, Neymar, Paqueta, Raphinha, Richarlison, Vinicius Jr.

Alternate Options By Position:

GK: Ederson, Weverton

DF: Militao, Dani Alves, Bremer

MF: Fabinho, Guimaraes, Fred, Ribeiro

FW: Martinelli, Jesus, Rodrygo, Pedro, Antony

Who Are Brazil's Best Players To Watch?

Defense: Thiago Silva - CB (Chelsea)

Thiago Silva remains one of the best center backs in the world, despite turning 38 this past September. Silva helped Chelsea win the UEFA Champions League title in 2021, assisted Paris Saint-Germain to finish as runner-up in 2020, and led Brazil to win the 2019 Copa América. The captain of this year's World Cup squad, Silva has been an ultra-reliable constant for his country over the last fifteen years.

Silva made his international debut for Brazil in 2008. The highest World Cup finish Brazil has had with Silva on their squad is a fourth-place finish in 2014 when the Brazilians hosted. There are few soccer players with a more decorated resumé than Thiago Silva. The missing piece to his trophy case is the elusive World Cup title. Silva has lost some speed, but his completeness as a defender allows him to be an integral piece to Brazil's team.

Midfield: Neymar - CAM/LW (PSG)

You can argue that when Neymar slides into the central midfield, Brazil plays in an aggressive 4-2-4. Whatever formation you want to call it, Neymar is going to slide behind the front three due to Brazil's immense talent and depth up top and their thin, aging midfield. The former Barcelona star is a freelancing playmaker, serving as the engine behind Brazil's attack.

Neymar is a true phenomenon and is regarded as one of our generation's greatest players. Few can match the tantalizing star's playmaking ability and production. Neymar is averaging over one goal contribution per game for his country. The two-time Ballon D'or third-place finisher is in a fantastic position to win the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament's best player. If this is Neymar's last World Cup, he will surely aim to make the most of it and perform as we have never before seen.

Forward: Vinicius Junior - LW (Real Madrid)

Vinícius Júnior, known by Vini Jr., is one of the most promising prospects in all of soccer. Vini Jr. is just 22 years old but broke out in a big way for his club, Real Madrid. Vinícius was the second-leading goalscorer, behind 2022 Ballon D'or winner Karim Benzema, for Madrid en route to their 14th UEFA Champions League title in May. His 22 goals across all competitions in the 2021-22 season set a new career high.

Vini Jr. is arguably the fastest player at the World Cup. His demonizing speed, matched with elite ball skills, makes for an outside-back's nightmare. The speedster typically lines up on the left wing but is quite versatile on the attack. Vini scored his first goal representing Brazil in a March World Cup qualifying match. Richarlison, Rodrygo, and Gabriel Jesus add to a deep, elite Brazilian attack. Nobody on this team can blend speed and skill quite like Vinícius Júnior.
