When is Trey Benson coming back? Will Trey Benson play again this season? Read about Trey Benson's return date and injury updates for 2025 as of Week 14.
Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) looked to be set to take over the starting running back job for his team after the season-ending injury to lead back James Conner (ankle).
Conner dislocated his ankle in Week 3 and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Benson took over in Week 4, but suffered a knee injury near the end of the game and was later placed on injured reserve.
It's been a long time since we've seen him on the field, and it hasn't been reported that he'll miss the rest of the season. He was placed on IR with a designation to return. But when will he come back?

Trey Benson Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Benson had his 21-day practice window opened last week, after being completely out of games and practices from Week 5 until Week 12. He must be elevated to the active roster during the week before Week 15's games, or he'll be out for the remainder of the season.
While that means he still has time, the latest updates are highly discouraging. Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon refuses to tell us anything of substance about his injury, but he returned to practice in Week 12 and logged three straight limited practices.
Will Johnson is off the injury report and good to go on Sunday in Tampa Bay.

However, in Week 13, he logged one limited practice on Wednesday before being held out of practice the next two days, and he was ruled out yet again. This doesn't seem like a good sign. Of course, we won't get the actual reasons why from the organization, but it's a concern.
It's possible he had a setback in his recovery, re-aggravated his injury, or was just dealing with unexpected soreness, but this casts into doubt whether he'll return from injured reserve at all. It could also be part of a load-management program, but it's weird that he had limited practices all last week.
Benson went through all drills while we were out there but just looked a bit uncomfortable. Kept shaking his leg, reaching toward his knee, hunching over, etc. after drills.

The above post in its entirety helps explain what happened while he was going through drills. It doesn't appear he's healthy yet, but the Cardinals waived practice squad running back Jermar Jefferson, which could mean Benson is nearing a return.
What I personally expect is for him to come back in Week 15. It would be surprising if he came back this week. It's possible, but when he does make it back, he could be on a pitch count.
Trey Benson Fantasy Football Outlook
It's likely going to be hard to trust Benson moving forward. Had he not had a setback and a clean bill of health instead, he'd be a starter. This more recent news suggests he could simply be inserted into the ugly committee backfield the Cardinals have right now.
That would restrict his touches and make him a risky flex play in all formats rather than a clear-cut RB2 moving forward. It would definitely be dangerous to start him in his first game back. The problem is that his return is coinciding with the fantasy playoffs.

Though he's explosive, there are other big issues. The Cardinals were eliminated from playoff contention after last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's also possible Arizona opts to simply shut him down for the remainder of the season.
Additionally, we could see his touches heavily restricted even if he is able to return. There are a lot of roadblocks in the way right now, and not a lot of encouraging news. So while he should still be rostered, the chances of him being crucial in the fantasy playoff stretch are fading.
