Fernando Tatis Jr. Dealing With Hamstring Tightness, Expects to Play Monday
Fernando Tatis Jr. (hamstring) expects to play Monday against the Baltimore Orioles despite hamstring tightness, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Tatis grabbed at his right hamstring in the seventh inning of a 7-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, and the three-time All-Star said after the game that he's dealing with "a little tightness, nothing crazy." Tatis has played in 134 of the Padres' 137 games this year and slashed .264/.370/.430 with 18 homers, 57 RBI, 93 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases over 600 plate appearances.Source: Kevin Acee - San Diego Union-Tribune
San Diego Padres outfielder Lake Bachar Serving as Opener on Monday
Lake Bachar will open against the Washington Nationals on Monday. The 30-year-old has made 43 appearances this season and recorded a 3.39 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP, 65 strikeouts, and 27 walks in 58 1/3 innings. Considering Bachar hasn't gone past the three-inning mark in any appearance this year, the Marlins are sure to rely heavily on their bullpen on Monday. Bachar & Co. will face a Washington team that has dropped eight in a row. The Nats' offense ranks 25th in the majors in runs and 26th in OPS.Source: Miami Marlins
Miami Marlins reliever Gabriel Arias Out Again on Monday
Gabriel Arias (hand) remains out of action for Monday's series opener at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Brayan Rocchio will make yet another start at the 6 on Monday and will hit ninth against Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello. Arias suffered a bruised right hand when he was hit by a pitch on Friday against the Seattle Mariners, and this will be his third straight game starting on the bench. X-rays came back negative on the 25-year-old, though, so hopefully he will be able to return at some point during the series in Boston. Daniel Schneeman is making the start at second and will hit second in the series opener. Neither Arias nor Rocchio are much to look at from an offensive standpoint for fantasy managers. Rocchio, 24, is currently hitting .231 (60-for-260) with only three home runs, 34 RBI and six steals on the season.Source: MLB.com
Cleveland Guardians infielder Spencer Steer Out, Sal Stewart Debuting on Monday
Spencer Steer (leg) is out of the lineup on Monday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Manager Terry Francona said the Reds are resting Steer because he has been playing through a leg injury. Top infield prospect Sal Stewart, making his major league debut, will fill in for Steer at first base and bat sixth against right-hander Chris Bassitt. Stewart has slashed a superb .309/.383/.524 with 20 homers, 80 RBI, 78 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases in 494 plate appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this season. The 21-year-old is versatile enough to play multiple positions in the infield, and Francona indicated that he'll receive plenty of opportunities during the final month of the season.Source: Charlie Goldsmith
Cincinnati Reds first baseman Daulton Varsho Back in Lineup on Monday
Daulton Varsho (hand) is returning to the lineup on Monday against Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene. Varsho will play center field and bat fifth in his first game since Friday. The 29-year-old left that contest - a 7-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers - after taking a pitch off the right hand, but X-rays came back negative. While injuries have limited Varsho to 48 games this year, he has been a tremendous source of power over 182 plate appearances, having slashed .226/.280/.567 with 15 homers, 42 RBI, and 26 runs scored. Despite the missed time, Varsho has a shot at his third 20-HR campaign. However, with just one stolen base, he's unlikely to post a fourth straight season with double-digit steals.Source: MLB.com

Aaron Civale Will Pitch Out of the Bullpen For the Cubs
Aaron Civale out of the bullpen after claiming him off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Civale has struggled in 2025, logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 74/33 K/BB ratio in 89 innings pitched with the Milwaukee Brewers and the White Sox. Ironically, the reason the Brewers traded Civale was that he was reluctant to pitch out of the bullpen for them, and he wanted to be a starting pitcher. Fast forward a few more months, and he is now pitching out of the bullpen for his third team in 2025. Civale's value is lessened as a long reliever, and for now, it appears that the Cubs will continue to stroll out Colin Rea and Javier Assad while Jameson Taillon (groin) and Michael Soroka (shoulder) return from the IL.Source: Jesse Rogers
The Chicago Cubs plan to use right-hander Jake Meyers Nearing a Return for the Astros
Jake Meyers (calf) could return from the 10-day injured list "in another week or so," Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Meyers has been on the shelf nursing a calf injury since July 11, but once he's activated, he should take over center field duty for the Astros upon his return. The Astros' center field position has been a revolving door, with Jacob Melton, Mauricio Dubón, and Chas McCormick filling in for Meyers' absence from the lineup. In his first three games in Triple-A with the Sugar Land Cowboys, Meyers has gone 1-for-9 with two walks. On the season, Meyers is slashing .308/.369/.405 with three home runs, 21 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 47 runs scored in 289 at-bats.Source: Matt Kawahara
Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said Sunday that Carmen Mlodzinski Lined up to Start on Tuesday
Carmen Mlodzinski is listed as the Pittsburgh Pirates' starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers at PNC Park, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Mlodzinski will receive another turn through the Pittsburgh rotation. Still, for the second outing in a row, he'll most likely be deployed as an opener while bridging the gap to rookie Bubba Chandler as the long reliever. At this time, Chandler is a must-add in all formats, while Mlodzinski is not the best streaming option due to his limited upside and the unlikelihood of him working more than a few innings. Although Mlodzinski has a solid 3.86 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 84 innings pitched, he's primarily been a reliever and has yet to throw more than four innings in any appearance he's been in this year.Source: Kevin Gorman
Right-hander Emmet Sheehan's Spot in the Rotation Being Skipped
Emmet Sheehan is being skipped this turn through the rotation, per manager Dave Roberts. That lines up Clayton Kershaw on Tuesday and Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday. Ohtani is expected to be the designated hitter on Thursday. With the Dodgers' pitching staff finally getting healthy, Sheehan appears to be the "odd-man out" or the one that Roberts wants not to overwork, as Sheehan is coming off Tommy John surgery in 2024. Sheehan will likely return to the mound against the Baltimore Orioles this weekend, but at this time, it's still not certain. Regardless, this is unfortunate news for Sheehan's fantasy managers, as the fantasy playoffs are underway and his turn in the rotation is being skipped. Sheehan has been solid as a starting pitcher for the Dodgers with a 3.56 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 48 innings pitched.Source: Sonja Chen
Sonja Chen of MLB.com reported on Saturday that due to the off days last Thursday and this Monday, Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler to Join Phillies Rotation on Sept. 12
Walker Buehler will have to wait a little while to debut with the club. Philadelphia plans to have Buehler make one start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before it brings him up to take the ball against the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 12, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. The Phillies will experiment with a six-man rotation down the stretch, so Buehler's not going to push anyone out of their starting staff. The club's hoping to catch late-season lightning in a bottle with Buehler, who has struggled this year despite possessing a quality track record. After a fruitful run with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2017-24, he joined the Boston Red Sox on a one-year, $21.05 million guarantee last winter. The 31-year-old fell flat in Boston, though, as he pitched to a 5.45 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP and 84:55 in 112 1/3 innings before the team released him Friday.Source: Matt Gelb - The Athletic
After signing a minor-league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, right-hander Jorge Mateo Not Ready to Return
Jorge Mateo (hamstring) will not return from the 60-day injured list when rosters expand on Monday, interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters. Mateo has been out since early June with elbow and hamstring problems. The 30-year-old has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk since Aug. 20, and he'll spend more time there before rejoining the Orioles. Mateo has played in 32 games with the O's this season and hit a miserable .180/.231/.279 with one homer, three RBI, seven runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 65 plate appearances.Source: Danielle Allentuck - Baltimore Banner
Baltimore Orioles utility player Jake Burger Could Return on Monday
Jake Burger (wrist) faced live pitching on Sunday and could come off the 10-day injured list Monday, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. Burger suffered a sprained left wrist on Aug. 17, continuing an injury-marred season for the 29-year-old. He has taken a total of three trips to the IL while also dealing with oblique and quadriceps issues. When healthy, Burger has hit an underwhelming .242/.275/.416 with 12 homers, 41 RBI, and 36 runs scored in 84 games and 309 plate appearances. The left-handed Rowdy Tellez has gotten most of the work at first base lately, and he and the right-handed Burger could share the position for the rest of the season.Source: Kennedi Landry - MLB.com
Texas Rangers first baseman James McCann Dealing With Lower-Back Tightness
James McCann (back) was scratched Friday with tightness in his lower back and did not play in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks instead started Adrian Del Castillo, who has mostly served as a DH when he has played this year. Shortly after starter Gabriel Moreno landed on the injured list with a hairline fracture in his right index finger on June 16, the Diamondbacks signed McCann to help cover for his loss. McCann has hit a respectable .233/.316/.384 with three homers in 98 plate appearances with the D-backs, but thanks in part to his back issues, he has only played in three games since Moreno returned Aug. 22.Source: MLB.com
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Pablo Lopez Dominant in Triple-A Rehab Start
Pablo Lopez (shoulder) was outstanding in a rehab start with Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday. Lopez threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball while striking out seven and walking one on 82 pitches (52 strikes). It was the third and likely final rehab start for Lopez, who has been sidelined with a teres major strain in his shoulder since early June. Before suffering the injury, the 29-year-old went 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 61:14 K:BB over 11 starts and 60 2/3 innings. Barring a change of plans, Lopez should return to the Twins' rotation in the coming days, likely during a weekend series against the Kansas City Royals.Source: MiLB.com
