Geno Smith is Missing One of His Weapons, Risky Start in Week 17
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith takes on the New York Giants at home in Week 17, but he will be without his top target, tight end Brock Bowers (knee), who was placed on IR after Week 16. Smith managed to complete 16 of his 23 pass attempts for 201 yards for two touchdowns against the stout Houston Texans in Week 16, but threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. This season, the 35-year-old quarterback has thrown the second-lowest rate of downfield passes at 27%, and he has relied on short-yardage targets, with 48% of his attempts going for nine or fewer yards. Geno's short-area tendency is a strength for the Giants' defense, which has allowed just a 68% completion percentage on short passes for the season, the second-lowest rate in the league. However, the only defense that allows a lower rate is the Texans, against whom Geno just posted a QB2 performance last week. Overall, the Giants are a top-five matchup for opposing quarterbacks, and even without Smith's best weapon in Week 17, the veteran quarterback remains viable for two-QB Superflex leagues in need of a starter due to this favorable matchup.
