Joey Logano Delivers Playoff Speed After Regular-Season Mediocrity
Joey Logano has often been criticized for his lack of consistency by people who erroneously believe the Winston Cup points system still matters, but his team clearly chooses to go for stage points while being indifferent to consistency to maximize his probability of winning the championship, even at the expense of consistent results. Logano has a knack for putting in devastating performances in the opening race of playoff rounds, and he did so again Sunday when he won the pole and led the first 52 laps before his teammate, eventual winner Ryan Blaney, overtook him. After beating Blaney out of the pits, he passed Kyle Larson for the lead again on Lap 138 and led most of Stage 2 en route to 141 laps led in total before Blaney passed him again. Although Logano finished fourth, he scored the second-most points and now leads Ross Chastain by 24 points for the final playoff spot.
