Zurich Classic - Course/Tournament History
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans was first played in 1938, though it has been held annually since 1958. Throughout its early history, the tournament rotated among several courses in the New Orleans area before settling at TPC Louisiana in 2005, where it has remained ever since, except for 2006.
Originally contested as a traditional stroke play event, the tournament underwent a significant change in 2017 when it transitioned to a team format. It now stands as the only official team event on the PGA TOUR schedule, featuring two-player teams competing in alternating formats throughout the week.
Zurich Insurance Group has served as the title sponsor since 2005. Prior to that, the tournament was known as the Classic of New Orleans, with various sponsors holding naming rights over the years.
Since the format change, a few notable trends have emerged. Cameron Smith is the only player to win the event twice in the team era, capturing the inaugural team title in 2017 alongside Jonas Blixt and winning again in 2021 with fellow Australian Marc Leishman.
Billy Horschel is the only player to win the event in both formats. He first won the individual title in 2013, then returned to win the team version in 2018 alongside Scott Piercy. Notably, Jason Dufner, who won the individual event in 2012, finished runner-up to Horschel and Piercy in that 2018 team event.
TPC Louisiana opened in 2004 and was designed by Pete Dye in collaboration with Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson. Built on more than 250 acres of wetlands just outside New Orleans, the course was designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, incorporating native cypress trees, water hazards, and the region’s marshland landscape.
TPC Louisiana plays as a par 72 and stretches over 7,400 yards. True to Dye’s design style, the layout features visually intimidating tee shots, risk-reward opportunities, and strategically placed bunkering. Water comes into play on several holes, and the course often demands precise iron play and strong decision-making, especially in alternate shot formats.
The course underwent significant repairs following Hurricane Katrina, which delayed its early years but ultimately led to improvements in conditioning and infrastructure.

Zurich Classic - Course Guide/ Scorecard
Originally designed by Pete Dye and opened in 2004, TPC Louisiana plays as a traditional par 72 layout, featuring four par 3s, ten par 4s, and four par 5s.
In terms of length, the course stretches to approximately 7,425 yards, placing it around the middle tier compared to other PGA TOUR venues. The fairways are relatively generous, averaging about 34.5 yards in width, which allows players to be aggressive off the tee.
The greens are smaller than average, measuring roughly 5,225 square feet, which places added importance on approach play and precision with irons. Bunkering is present but not overly penal, with just over 100 bunkers on the property, while water hazards come into play on several holes, adding another layer of difficulty and strategic decision making throughout the round.
