Ha-Seong Kim Joining Braves
Ha-Seong Kim (back) off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. To make room for Kim, the Braves transferred third baseman Austin Riley (abdomen) to the 60-day injured list. Kim has been on the 10-day IL with inflammation in his lower back since Aug. 21, but the Braves are expected to activate him before they face the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. After spending his first four seasons with the San Diego Padres, Kim joined the Rays on a two-year, $29 million guarantee last winter. The Rays knew when they signed Kim that he could miss the beginning of the season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. As it turns out, he didn't debut with the Rays until July 4. Since then, back problems have forced Kim to the IL twice. The 29-year-old ended up playing just 24 games for the Rays and hitting a lackluster .214/.290/.321 with two homers, five RBI, five runs scored, and six stolen bases in 93 plate appearances. Tampa Bay will move forward with prospect Carson Williams as its primary shortstop, while Kim could bump the light-hitting Nick Allen out of a starting role in Atlanta.
