Is Jakobi Meyers or Brian Thomas Jr. the WR1 for the Jaguars Now? Fantasy Football Outlook for Week 10

Brian Thomas Jr - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Is Jakobi Meyers or Brian Thomas Jr. the WR1 for the Jaguars now? With Jakobi Meyers traded to the Jaguars, John breaks down their fantasy football outlooks heading into Week 10 of 2025.

In a recent move, just before the 2025 NFL trade deadline, the Las Vegas Raiders traded wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville will receive Meyers, and the Raiders will get fourth and sixth-round picks in exchange.

It's not a total surprise, as the Jaguars WR room has been in turmoil all season. Their top WR, Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle), has dealt with injuries to his shoulder, wrist, and ankle, and has been very inconsistent, but mostly disappointing.

Additionally, rookie WR Travis Hunter (knee) is on injured reserve, and will miss three more weeks. And WR Dyami Brown (concussion) got concussed in Week 9 and could miss time. So at this point, will Meyers or Thomas be the WR1 moving forward? Let's dive in.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Is Jakobi Meyers or Brian Thomas Jr. The WR1 For The Jaguars?

It's hard to say right now. Thomas will likely miss some time with his ankle injury. He was diagnosed with a "low-grade" high-ankle sprain, whatever that means. I anticipate him missing at least two games. His injury looked quite similar to that of Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb.

This will obviously give a chance for Meyers to immediately become the top target for the Jaguars. But the question is how long will that last for? Meyers wasn't particularly good this season with the Raiders. He was hyper-targeted in the first two weeks, but his usage fell off a cliff.

He's long been touted to be a potential dominant WR1 on many teams, but we haven't yet seen that materialize. He had nice seasons in 2023 and 2024, but much of his production was driving by high reception volume that wasn't always backed up by stellar yardage totals.

Meyers will likely have to prove himself able to function well in Jaguars head coach Liam Coen's offense before a decision will be made. But I'm leaning toward yes, because Thomas has clearly been playing through multiple injuries and has had massive struggles with drops.

There are few things worse than a perfectly-schemed passing play and an accurate throw by the quarterback ending up with an incompletion due to a drop, or worse, an interception. Thomas' back-breaking drops have crippled the Jaguars' ability to execute their offensive game plan.

Even though Meyers isn't the stellar athlete that Thomas is, he's a much more sure-handed receiver -- in fact, he has a lower drop rate than every other WR the Jags have. Add in that he is an excellent route-runner that runs very crisp, precise routes, and he should take the WR1 job in short order... at least temporarily.

Hunter's return could throw a wrench in those plays, but that's a problem for three weeks from now.

Brian Thomas Jr. And Jakobi Meyers Fantasy Football Outlooks

Thomas will have to return from his ankle injury first. Wide receivers tend to miss around three weeks due to high-ankle sprains. It's strange that there's so much optimism for his quick return -- we probably won't see him back for a while.

When he does return, he'll have a significantly less rosy outlook than he did even a few weeks ago. If he had been able to clean up the drops or overcome his injury issues, it's likely Jacksonville would have never traded for Meyers. JAX seems to think they can contend this year with better WR play.

Much of Thomas' late-season production last year was driven by a very easy schedule, quarterback Mac Jones constantly airing it out to him, and basically every other pass-catching weapon on the team being injured (Evan Engram, Gabe Davis, and Christian Kirk).

It seems like it was a fluke. He averaged 12 targets per game over his last six contests, and that probably wasn't ever going to happen again. He did have some struggles with his hands in 2024, and it appears those have been exacerbated this year.

He was a low-end WR2, but he'll bump down to a WR3 with upside if he can clean up his issues. WRs tend to struggle coming back from ankle injuries and often post lower production, as they play through the stiffness and pain that takes longer to clear up.

Meyers, on the other hand, will move into the WR2 conversation. He has a tough matchup against the Houston Texans on the road up next, so it might be a bit ambitious to think he'll be a smash start this week. But he got a big upgrade from Raiders quarterback Geno Smith to Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence (not quite as awful), so that helps.

The next two weeks will be games against the Dallas Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns. The Cowboys have been the worst defense against the pass this year, so Meyers should have a very nice game, and I recommend starting him that week.

In Week 11, against the Cleveland Browns, he has a solid matchup at least, even though it's a tough defense. He's excelled against man coverage, which the Browns run at a high rate. I recommend starting him in 12-team leagues in Week 11 as a result. After that, we'll just have to see how much Hunter gets used.

At least Thomas still has some upside. Brown shouldn't be much of a factor this year.
