Fantasy Football Running Backs Best Ball Rankings for 2025 (Tiers 1-3)

Bucky Irving - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Fantasy football running back rankings analysis for 2025 best ball drafts for RBs in the top three tiers. Phil breaks down the best values relative to ADP.

The resurgence of the running back position during 2024 was exemplified by the ability of six different veterans to flourish in new environments after operating for at least five seasons with their previous teams -- Saquon Barkley/Derrick Henry/Joe Mixon/Josh Jacobs/Tony Pollard/Aaron Jones. Their collective success after advancing through the process of free agency has provided a distinct reminder that some running backs can be critical difference-makers for their teams.

An encouraging collection of backs is also worthy of investment during the early rounds of your Best Ball drafts, which provide the opportunity to assemble rosters that will not require additional management following the conclusion of each draft. This makes it essential to construct teams that can withstand the production-inhibiting effect of injuries, disappointing touch totals, and other challenges without the benefit of a waiver wire.

The team at RotoBaller is providing tiered rankings and detailed analysis to help you navigate the draft process in this format. This article will direct the spotlight on running backs in Tiers 1-3. Every alteration within the fantasy landscape will be infused into the Best Ball rankings throughout the offseason and you can find the latest fantasy football rankings here.

Editor's Note: The FFPC Baby Gorilla Tournament is now open, featuring a $100,000 grand prize and a $675,450 total prize pool! This 12-team, Tight End Premium contest uses a 20-round draft format, with the overall winners determined by total points scored during Weeks 15–17. Tier 1 Running Back Rankings

Saquon Barkley, Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs

Saquon Barkley was the fifth running back to be selected during the majority of 2024 drafts. However, he surpassed the expectations of his ADP (12/RB5), as his migration from the Giants to NFC East rival Philadelphia propelled him to the most prolific numbers at his position.

Barkley’s league-high 345 attempts (21.6 per game) easily exceeded his previous career-best total that had been attained in 2022 (295/18.4 per game). He also accumulated a league-high 2,005 rushing yards (125.3 per game) from Weeks 1-17, which was just 100 yards short of Eric Dickerson’s single-season record. It also surpassed Barkley’s previous career-best total by nearly 700 yards (1,312/82 per game).

That included a league-high 11 matchups in which he eclipsed 100 yards, a league-best five games with 150+, and a league-high seven rushes of 40+. Barkley also rose to second in yards after contact (971), seventh in rushing touchdowns, and generated a league-best 835 explosive yards, according to Fantasy Points Data.

Barkley also led all backs with an average of 22.2 points per game while finishing as an RB1 during 10 of his 16 matchups. Barkley will turn 28 on Super Bowl Sunday and is positioned to remain the foundation of Philadelphia’s offense. That entrenches him among the top three backs to select during all drafts.

Bijan Robinson had averaged 16.0 touches per game during his 2023 rookie season while Tyler Allgeier secured an average of 12 per game. However, Robinson garnered an average of 21.5 touches per game during 2024, which cemented his place among the elite tier at his position.

Robinson rose to fourth overall with 304 rushing attempts (17.9 per game) from Weeks 1-18 and capitalized by soaring to third in rushing yards (1,456/85.6 per game). That included 10 games in which Robinson eclipsed 90+, five games of 100+, and a career-high 170 yards in Week 18. Robinson was also fourth in yards after contact (934), fifth in rushing touchdowns (14), and seventh in rush yards over expected, according to Next Gen Stats.

Robinson was also fourth among backs in targets (72/4.2 per game), third in receptions (61/3.6 per game), fourth in yards after catch (514), and fifth in receiving yards (431/25.4 per game). Robinson also rose to third in points per game (20.1) and was also third in missed tackles forced (60), according to Fantasy Points Data.

Robinson is primed to build upon the exceptional numbers that he assembled during 2024 and should be selected during the initial half of Round 1 in all drafts.

Jahmyr Gibbs ascended into the elite tier of running backs during his second season even though he operated in a rotation with David Montgomery. Gibbs finished 11th overall with 250 attempts (14.7 per game) and vaulted to fifth in rushing yards (1,412 /83.1 per game). He also exceeded 100+ yards during five different contests and tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns (16).

Gibbs was also fourth in rush yards over expected (225), according to Next Gen Stats, while finishing third in receiving yards (517/30.4 per game), sixth in receptions (51/3.5 per game), and seventh in targets (63/4.2 per game).

Weeks 16-18 Yards  Yards/Gm Yards/Att 100+ Att  Att/Gm
Jonathan Taylor 520 173.3 5.5 3 95 31.7

Saquon Barkley 317 158.5 5.3 2 60 30
Bucky Irving 270 90 4.9 1 55 18.3

Gibbs also launched into the league lead in receptions (13/4.3 per game) and receiving yards (122/40.7 per game) while Montgomery was sidelined with a knee injury (Weeks 16-18). He was also third in rushing yards (365/121.7 per game) while averaging a league-best 32.6 points per game.

Neither the presence of Montgomery nor Detroit’s transition from Ben Johnson should deter you from prioritizing Gibbs in Round 1 of upcoming drafts.

He will continue to provide the Lions with versatility and a favorable level of explosiveness that sustains his potential to erupt for sizable yardage whenever he is on the field.

Tier 2 Running Back Rankings

De'Von AchaneBreece Hall, Chase Brown, Christian McCaffrey, Josh Jacobs, Bucky Irving, Ashton Jeanty

De'Von Achane quickly established his dynamic presence during his 2023 rookie season, when he emerged as PFF’s highest-graded running back (92.1 percent). Achane also soared to fifth in yards per game (72.7) and accumulated 30 forced missed tackles, according to PFF.

Achane also attained those results while operating with a 42.4 percent snap share, as Raheem Mostert paced Miami’s backfield with a 56.4 percent share. However, Achane bypassed Mostert to seize a 61.4 percent snap share while ascending into a lead-back role during 2024.

Achane paced the Dolphins in attempts (203/11.9 per game), rushing yards (907/53.4 per game), yards after contact (573), and rushing touchdowns (six). Achane also led all backs in receptions (78/4.9 per game), receiving yards (592/37 per game), and yards after catch (674) and was second in targets (87/5.4 per game) from Weeks 1-18. Achane also rose to fifth overall in points per game (17.6) while finishing as an RB1 during nine matchups.

Weeks 1-18 Rec Rec/Gm Yards YardsGm Targets Targ/Gm
De'Von Achane 78 4.6 592 34.8 87 5.1
Alvin Kamara 68 4.9 543 38.8 89 6.4
Bijan Robinson 61 3.6 431 25.4 72 4.2
Breece Hall 57 3.6 483 30.2 76 4.8
Chase Brown 54 3.6 360 24 65 4.3
Jahmyr Gibbs 52 3.5 497 33.1 63 4.2
Javonte Williams 52 3.1 346 20.4 70 4.1

Mostert will turn 33 in April and no longer looms as a threat to pilfer a sizable workload. Mike McDaniel also failed to entrust Jaylen Wright with a significant role in 2024. That maintains Achane’s clear path toward operating as the Dolphins’ primary back while delivering RB1 output to fantasy managers.

Breece Hall was the second back to be selected during the 2024 draft season (ADP 4/RB2) due to anticipation that he could provide consistent RB1 production as the Jets’ unchallenged lead back.

Hall did secure a career-high 72.2 percent snap share during 2024, which placed him seventh among all backs. However, he did not function in a workhorse role to the degree that many fantasy managers had envisioned as New York ranked dead last in rushing attempts per game (21.4) and 29th in run play percentage (35.9 percent).

Touches were also distributed to rookies Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis throughout the season as Allen eclipsed a 30 percent snap share during six different matchups and Davis attained a 27.4 percent share from Weeks 14-18. This was partially a byproduct of Hall’s troublesome knee after he suffered an injury in Week 11. Hall did finish as an RB1 four times from Weeks 2-7. However, he only accomplished it twice during his next nine matchups.

The Jets offense will undergo a significant reconstruction following the arrival of Tanner Engstrand as offensive coordinator. This process will be intensified if Aaron Rodgers’ tenure as the team’s starting signal-caller has been concluded. Allen and Davis will lurk as candidates to siphon opportunities, but Hall should still deliver RB2 production.

Chase Brown operated in a timeshare with Zack Moss at the onset of his second season. However, he delivered a statistical eruption after confiscating the lead-back role for Cincinnati while vaulting into RB1 territory for fantasy managers.

Brown was relegated to a 24.3 percent snap share and averages of 4.7 carries/34.7 rushing yards per game from Weeks 1-3. However, he soared to sixth overall with a 72.0 percent snap share from Weeks 4-17 while rising to seventh in attempts (215/16.5 per game) and 11th in rushing yards (886/68.2 per game) during that span.

He was also 13th in missed tackles forced (36) from Weeks 1-18, according to Fantasy Points Data.

Weeks 4-17 Attempts  Att/Gm Yards Yards/Gm TD 20+
Saquon Barkley 282 21.7 1654 127.2 9 14
Kyren Williams 262 20.2 1135 87.3 10 2
Derrick Henry 249 19.2 1502 115.5 10 13
Josh Jacobs 233 17.9 1007 77.5 14 4
Bijan Robinson 228 17.5 1090 83.8 11 4
Jonathan Taylor 218 21.8 993 99.3 7 8
Chase Brown 215 16.5 886 68.2 7 8

Brown also rose to third among backs with 59 targets (4.5 per game) from Weeks 4-17. He was also third in receptions (49/3.8 per game), seventh in receiving yards (341/26.2 per game), and sixth in air yards (54).

Weeks 4-17 Targets Targ/Gm  Rec Rec/Gm Yards Yards/Gm
Alvin Kamara 78 7.1 58 5.3 411 37.4
De'Von Achane 68 5.2 61 4.7 419 32.2
Chase Brown 59 4.5 49 3.8 341 26.2
Bijan Robinson 55 4.2 48 3.7 339 26.1
Javonte Williams 55 4.2 39 3 219 16.8
Breece Hall 52 4.3 38 3.2 348 29
Kenneth Walker III 50 5 44 4.4 293 29.3

Brown was also 14th with an average of 15.9 points per game and vaulted to seventh overall with an average of 18.3 points per game from Weeks 4-17. Brown’s ability to excel in a feature-back role has vaulted him among your top six options for his position.

Many of you would prefer to avoid any reminder that Christian McCaffrey was the first selection in the majority of 2024 drafts. That was a justifiable decision after McCaffrey accumulated a league-high 1,459 rushing yards (91.2 per game) in 2023.

He had also finished second in receiving yards (564/35.3 per game), third in receptions (67/4.2 per game), and fourth in targets (83/5.2 per game) while averaging a league-high 24.5 points per game.

However, fantasy managers who embraced the opportunity to seize McCaffrey with their initial pick are painfully aware of the results that transpired during his disappointing 2024 season. Multiple injuries (calf/Achilles/torn PCL) limited McCaffrey to just four matchups, while he only accumulated 167 snaps, 65 touches, and 348 total yards.

McCaffrey will turn 29 in June, and the discouraging numbers that resulted from his prolonged absence last season should drop his draft position into Round 2.

Kyle Shanahan has repeatedly demonstrated his penchant for entrusting McCaffrey with extensive workloads whenever McCaffrey is in San Francisco’s lineup. That delivers your incentive to prioritize McCaffrey near his diminished ADP if you are confident in his ability to elude lingering injuries.

Josh Jacobs signed a four-year contract with Green Bay during the 2024 offseason, which concluded his five-year tenure with the Raiders. Jacobs rewarded the Packers for their decision by operating effectively as Green Bay’s primary back while supplying fantasy managers with a reliable RB1.

Jacobs surpassed 300 carries (301/17.7 per game) and 1,300 rushing yards (1,329/78.2 per game) for the second time in his career while finishing sixth in both categories. Jacobs also rose to fourth with a career-high 15 touchdowns, was third in yards after contact (936), finished fourth in red-zone carries (59), and led all backs with 40 attempts inside the 10-yard line.

Jacobs also tied for the league lead in forced missed tackles (88), according to PFF. He also collected 43 targets (2.5 per game), 36 receptions (2.1 per game), and 342 receiving yards (20.1 per game) and finished eighth with an average of 17.2 points per game.

Jacobs will turn 27 in February and is currently cemented atop a Green Bay depth chart that contains Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks. He should remain positioned to operate with a massive workload while providing managers with a viable option to target during the second round of your drafts.

Bucky Irving was the sixth running back to be selected during the 2024 NFL Draft when Tampa Bay secured him in Round 4 (125th overall). He trailed Rachaad White in snap share from Weeks 1-9 (40.6 percent/61.4 percent).

He began his first season in a rotation but eventually usurped White to lead the Buccaneers backfield in snap share from Weeks 10-18 (50.5 percent/48.9 percent).

2024 Rookies  Rush Yards Yards/Gm Attempts Att/Gm TDs
Bucky Irving 1,122 66 207 12.2 8
Tyrone Tracy Jr. 839 49.4 192 11.3 5
Ray Davis 442 26 113 6.6 3
Isaac Guerendo 420 26.3 84 5.3 4
Braelon Allen 334 19.6 92 5.4 2
Audric Estime 310 23.8 76 5.8 2

Irving also led all members of his rookie class in rushing yards (1,122/66 per game), attempts (207/12.2 per game), and rushing touchdowns (eight) while averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. Irving also launched into fifth among all backs in explosive yards (400), according to Fantasy Points Data.

Irving also finished ninth among all backs in receiving yards from Weeks 1-18 (392/24.5 per game) and was 10th in receptions (47/2.8 per game) and 15th in targets (52/3.1 per game). He also finished 19th in points per game (14.4) and rose to sixth from Weeks 10-18 (18.3 per game).

Tampa Bay will transition from Liam Coen to Josh Grizzard as the Buccaneers offensive coordinator. However, that should not discourage you from prioritizing Irving in Round 2 of upcoming drafts, as he has demonstrated his ability to operate as a highly productive resource.

Ashton Jeanty possesses the ability to explode for significant yardage while operating with an elite-level blend of vision and balance. These attributes were consistently on display as Jeanty stockpiled 3,948 rushing yards (151.8 per game) and 43 rushing touchdowns during his final two seasons at Boise State. He also collected 66 of his 84 targets while generating 707 yards as a receiving weapon.

Season Attempts Att/Gm Yards Yards/Gm TD
2022 156 11.1 821 58.6 7
2023 220 18.3 1347 112.3 14
2024 374 26.7 2601 185.8 29
Career 750 18.8 4769 119.2 50

That includes his numbers during 2024 when Jeanty led the nation with 2,601 yards (185.8 per game). Jeanty surpassed 100 yards during all 14 of his matchups while exceeding 200 yards during six different contests.

Tahj Brooks 1505 136.8 286 26 17
Dylan Sampson 1491 114.7 258 19.8 22

He also accrued a whopping 374 attempts (26.7 per game), averaged 7.0 yards per attempt, led all backs in yards after contact (1,970), and accumulated 151 missed tackles forced, according to PFF.

Jeanty also captured the Doak Walker Award and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting. He is now destined to become the first running back to be selected during the upcoming NFL Draft (4/24-4/26).

The enticing convergence of his home-run capabilities and his opportunity to flourish as a workhorse back in his new environment positions Jeanty to deliver RB1 production if you secure him on your rosters.

Tier 3 Running Back Rankings

Kyren Williams, Derrick Henry, Jonathan Taylor

Kyren Williams was not selected until the conclusion of Round 2 during the 2024 draft season (ADP 23/RB10). This was a byproduct of the Rams’ decision to secure Blake Corum in Round 3 of the 2024 NFL Draft, which fueled apprehension surrounding Williams’ prospects of maintaining his workhorse role in Sean McVay’s offense.

That concern was unfounded as Williams led all backs with an 86.6 percent snap share. Corum completed his rookie season with an 11.1 percent snap share and never posed a threat to Williams’ workhorse role.

Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry were also the only backs who accumulated more rushing attempts than Williams (316/19.8 per game), who was also seventh in rushing yards (1,299/81.2 per game) -- including 10 games with 85+.

Williams also led all backs with 70 carries in the red zone and tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns (14). He was also fifth in yards after contact (854) and finished 10th in points per game (17.0).

Corum could conceivably pilfer a higher percentage of touches this season. However, Williams appears primed to sustain his role as the lead back for Los Angeles, which positions him to provide you with RB1 output.

Derrick Henry accumulated a league-high 1,529 attempts (21.2 per game) and a league-best 7,209 rushing yards (100.1 per game) during his final five seasons with Tennessee (2019-2023). He also stockpiled 68 rushing touchdowns during that sequence, which were 22 more than any other back.

Henry’s exodus from the Titans to Baltimore in 2024 did not impede him from functioning as a highly productive workhorse in his new environment.

Henry finished second overall in rushing attempts (325/19.1 per game) while surpassing 300+ for the fourth time since 2019. He also accumulated 20+ carries during nine different contests.

Henry also rose to second in rushing yards (1,921/113 per game), which included nine games with 100+, and four games of 150+. Henry also paced his position in rush yards over expected per attempt (1.77), according to Next Gen Stats.

Henry also paced the league in yards after contact (1,086), tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns (16), and was fourth with an average of 19.8 points per game.

Henry turned 31 in January. However, he has already defied expectations associated with his age and will secure an opportunity to remain among the league’s leading rushers once again.

Jonathan Taylor re-established his place among the RB1s in 2024 while playing in 14 games for the first time since 2021. Taylor was sidelined from Weeks 5-7 after suffering an ankle injury. However, he still finished fourth overall in rushing yards (1,431/102.2 per game), which was the second-highest total in his career.

Taylor eclipsed 100+ yards in eight different contests and generated a league-best 627 yards (156.8 per game) from Weeks 15-18. Taylor also surpassed 300 attempts for the second time in his career while rising to fifth overall (303). He also operated with a league-best 21.6 per game and accumulated a league-high 117 carries (29.3 per game) from Weeks 15-18.

Taylor also finished fourth in rushes of 20+ yards (11) from Weeks 1-18 and was fourth in explosive yards (510), according to Fantasy Points Data. Taylor was also fifth in red-zone attempts (58), seventh in points per game (17.5), and 11th in yards after contact (717). The Colts should restructure their offense during the offseason, but that should not impede Taylor from delivering RB1 production once again.
