There’s a changing of the guard with the Baltimore Ravens as their off-season moves shift their priority to the passing game. Aside from hiring Todd Monken as their offensive coordinator, they also signed Odell Beckham Jr. and Nelson Agholor. Meanwhile, Rashod Bateman is back to full health after playing in just six games last season.
But drafting Zay Flowers validates the Ravens’ commitment to surround quarterback Lamar Jackson with outstanding talent. The former Boston College standout can do damage in the slot by running fast routes. He can also make quick cuts to change direction and is elusive on the open field.
Flowers finished his final season at Boston College with 78 receptions for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns. Monken will help define his role starting in the rookie minicamp.

Zay Flowers will be the Ravens’ yards-after-catch weapon
The Ravens have their so-called “home run hitters” in Beckham Jr. and Bateman. Meanwhile, tight end Mark Andrews will serve as their big-target receiver. Therefore, Flowers can contribute to Baltimore’s cause by using his quickness to evade defenders.
His shifty moves allow him to zip through the open space when a tackler is about to bring him down. Flowers needs just a little daylight and good blocking downfield to take the ball to the house. This attribute made him a two-time First Team All-ACC and Associated Press Third Team All-American.
With him lining up, defensive coordinators must pay attention to him because he can turn a short catch into a significant gain. Flowers can also create mismatches by running routes through slower linebackers, giving him space to operate.
If defensive backs decided to load on Beckham or Bateman, Flowers’ acceleration would give him an edge during one-on-one coverages. He can also fool defenders by shifting gears and switching directions on a dime.
The Baltimore Ravens need all the help they can get, mainly because they play in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. Having Zay Flowers on the roster can be the advantage they need to regain the division title and make a postseason return. In a division with Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, George Pickens, Diontae Johnson, and Amari Cooper, the Ravens have a boost in their passing game with Flowers.
