Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (knee) continues to work his way back from a knee injury that he suffered in Week 4. He earned the Cardinals starting running back job that very game, and didn't make it to the next week unscathed.
He was placed on injured reserve ahead of Week 5, where he remains. Players on IR with a non-season-ending designation have to miss at least four contests, and so far, Benson hasn't played in five, meaning he was eligible to return as early as last week.
But we still haven't seen him on the field. This season has been marked by quite a few strange injury situations in which we're not privy to the truth behind the situation, so it's worth asking -- will Benson play again this year, or is he out for the season?

Is Trey Benson Out for the 2025 Season?
There's still plenty of time left in the 2025 regular season, so it's probably premature to assume Benson won't play again. It feels like we're nearing his return, but his 21-day practice window still hasn't been opened, so we're not sure of a timetable yet.
The organization hasn't given us any useful information. Instead, head coach Jonathan Gannon has stated that Benson is "getting better", which is awesome to hear! That said, we really just don't know anything. But we can be fairly certain he'll come back this season as of now.

The second-year pro's exact situation likely isn't something we'll be privy to until his practice window is opened. Then we'll at least know that he has to be elevated to the active roster within 21 days, so we can expect his return at that point to be within three weeks.
Trey Benson 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Obviously, every starting running back should be rostered in all leagues, because the RB1 role for the vast majority of teams leads to a far higher amount of fantasy points scored per game than does the RB2 or RB3 role. It's much harder to find a productive RB2 than it is a WR2.

Obviously, the above recommendation to grab New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller (knee) in free agency doesn't apply any more. He's out for the season with a torn ACL. But at one point, Benson was forcing a high rate of missed tackles, which bodes well for his outlook.
Elusive RBs tend to have a higher rate of explosive plays, which helps their fantasy stock. And forcing missed tackles at a high rate consistently helps RBs create more out of the plays that they're given. Benson should return to a nice role that includes plenty of rushing volume.

There are flaws with his game. His vision isn't top-tier, and he often hits incorrect holes or bounces runs outside when he should keep them in between the tackles. This tends to lead to a high volume of low-yardage plays mixed in with a few explosive rushes.
And he doesn't work a lot on passing downs, so his upside as a receiver is pretty limited, which isn't fun in full-PPR leagues. But he'll at least have the starting role, and the Cardinals are typically a run-heavy team, though that might change with new starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
It's hard to project him as anything more than a low-end RB2 right now. He's worth holding in your IR spots for now, so don't drop him.
