Week 9 Fantasy Football Quarterback Outlooks

Joe Flacco, Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco (shoulder) has been outstanding through his first three starts with the team, throwing for 801 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions. The 18-year veteran has leaned heavily on Ja'Marr Chase, who's drawn an incredible 54 targets over that span.

Flacco suffered a shoulder injury late in last week's loss to the New York Jets, putting his Week 9 status in doubt. With the Bengals heading into a Week 10 bye, the team may opt to give Jake Browning another spot start to allow Flacco time to recover. Even so, Flacco has played at a high level and remains fantasy-relevant across all formats once healthy.

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa should only be considered in Superflex formats when his team plays host to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football. During the past two weeks, the former Alabama star was benched in a blowout loss, then promptly went 20-for-26 with four touchdown passes in a blowout win last week. The Ravens rank a lowly 25th against fantasy quarterbacks, but looked improved last week with middle linebacker Roquan Smith back in the lineup.

The Dolphins are missing No. 1 receiver Tyreek Hill (knee) and No. 1 tight end Darren Waller (pectoral), but even with a full lineup, Miami has been maybe the most volatile team in the league. Tagovailoa has some appeal in a strong matchup, but there is ultimately risk with starting an up-and-down quarterback on a short week.

Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is set to be under center for the first time since Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. As a potential QB1 every time he takes the field, it's not a surprise that he becomes a must-start the moment he returns. Jackson will take on the Miami Dolphins defense in Week 9, a unit that ranks 24th against opposing QBs and has allowed an average of 18.71 fantasy points per game.

Through four games this season, Jackson has accrued 869 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one interception while completing 71.6% of his passes. He's also contributed 166 yards and another touchdown on 21 carries. Fantasy managers probably have already thrown him into their lineups the moment he was confirmed to be back, as they should.

Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has enjoyed a strong start to his first season with the team, completing 68.2% of his passes for 1,754 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions through seven games. Darnold has established a strong connection with star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and has peppered him with a league-high 34.7% target share.

The 28-year-old has been the league's most efficient passer, averaging 9.1 yards per attempt, but it's come on limited volume, with just 27.4 pass attempts per game, ranking 29th in the league. Darnold has appeal as a weekly streamer in the right matchups, but he doesn't have the pass volume to be a reliable weekly starter for fantasy. He does have a great matchup in Week 9 against the Washington Commanders and is ranked as RotoBaller's QB15.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said earlier that Purdy was slated to be limited on Wednesday. It sounds like this was the plan for Purdy as works his way back from a turf toe injury.

An issue that sidelined him for every game besides two coming into Week 9. It's worth noting that backup quarterback Mac Jones (knee) was a full participant on Wednesday. Jones figures to draw another start versus the New York Giants this weekend, assuming Purdy is unable to play. Fantasy managers will need to wait and see what Purdy does in practice over the next few days. If active, Purdy should reclaim his starting gig and be a QB1 for this weekend.

Tyler Shough, New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore announced on Wednesday that rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will start for the team for the rest of the season. Moore said that he feels Shough is ready and that he is "really excited for him." The Saints benched Spencer Rattler in last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Shough went 17-for-30 passing for 128 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception in relief in just his second NFL appearance.

The second-rounder out of Louisville will now lead the Saints offense for the rest of the year, and he'll get a tough matchup on the road against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend in his first career start. Shough has a strong arm and good size at 6-foot-5, 219 pounds, but he won't give fantasy managers any additional upside with his legs in what has been a very inconsistent Saints offense. Expect plenty of growing pains. Shough should remain on the waiver wire in single-QB, 12-team redraft leagues.

J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (ankle) will have a full week to prepare before returning as the starter for Week 9 against the Detroit Lions, according to Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune. McCarthy is expected to step back in as Minnesota's starting quarterback for the first time since Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, when he suffered a high-ankle sprain that caused him to miss five games.

The 2024 first-round pick struggled to adjust to the speed of the NFL in his first two games, completing 24 of 41 pass attempts for 301 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions to go with nine sacks taken. The 22-year-old will have plenty of growing pains after missing all of his rookie year with a knee injury, but head coach Kevin O'Connell has expressed confidence in him as their starter going forward. It's a tough spot to make his return, with a hostile road environment awaiting in Detroit for Week 9.
