Many analysts were intrigued by the Washington Commanders before the start of the 2023 NFL season, as the team finished .500 in 2022 despite inadequate QB play from Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke.

Sam Howell didn't have a bad start to his first year as a starter, even leading the entire NFL in passing yards midway through the season despite getting sacked at a historic rate. However, the wheels fell off and the team lost their last eight games, with Howell throwing seven touchdowns to 12 interceptions.

The Commanders finished the year 4-13 and Howell led the league in interceptions (21) and sacks (65). Ron Rivera was finally fired, and now former Cowboys DC Dan Quinn will be in charge as the new head coach.

What Draft Picks Do The Washington Commanders Own?

The Commanders currently possess eight draft picks, but they will receive San Francisco's compensatory third-round pick as part of the Chase Young trade, which will bring their total of draft picks to nine. They are currently not projected to receive any more compensatory picks.

All eyes will be on their first-round pick, which is the second overall pick in the entire 2024 NFL Draft. But they also have three more picks in the first 67 selections, so they have a nice chance of landing a future star.

Who Could The Washington Commanders Draft In The First Round?

This will depend entirely on how Dan Quinn and first-year GM Adam Peters view Sam Howell. If they truly think that he can be "the guy" for the future, they could either help him out with a weapon like Marvin Harrison Jr., boost the atrocious offensive line to give him some protection with someone like Joe Alt, or even get someone who could do both like TE Brock Bowers.

There's also a chance that they can trade down if they want to give Howell another shot, but if they don't want Howell anymore, they could either draft Drake Maye, who is a Tar Heel just like Howell, or they could choose Jayden Daniels. There's also a small chance that they go all-in and trade for the number one overall pick if the Bears want to keep Justin Fields and choose Caleb Williams.

They have a lot of options, and they better choose carefully, as the next ten years of their franchise depends entirely on what they'll do on April 25, 2024.
