According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Toronto Blue Jays have signed outfielder Dayan Viciedo to a minor league deal.
Over the winter, Viciedo was released by the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox still owe Viciedo a 30-day termination pay which will be a fraction of the $4.4 million he would have gained via arbitration.
Viciedo, 25 turning 26 in March, is known for being a power hitter. After two short stints in the majors for his first two seasons, Viciedo became a regular in the major leagues, hitting at least 21 home runs in two of the last three seasons. The right-handed power hitter has had better career success against left-handed pitchers, hitting .291/.331/.507 against southpaws. Though, in 2014, he hit just .221/.272/.407 against left-handed pitchers.
With the knee injury to outfielder Michael Saunders, which will sideline the acquisition for five to six weeks, Viciedo will add to the Blue Jays' outfield depth and he will likely see time in left field. The Cuban could also see time at the corner infield positions despite limited major league experience in the infield.
