Week 6 Fantasy Football Running Back Outlooks

Saquon Barkley, New York Giants

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley tallied his lowest rushing yards count of the season against the Broncos, carrying the ball just six times for 30 yards. On the other hand, Barkley has the 10th-most receptions among RBs this year with 17, and added to that count by hauling in three catches for 58 yards and a touchdown versus Denver.

In Week 6, he matches up with the Giants on Thursday Night Football, and New York allows the fifth-most fantasy points to RBs this season. When Barkley met the G-Men last year, he bulldozed them for 176 yards. Whether he has a good game running or a good game receiving, you can bet on #26 to have a good game. Barkley is a high-end RB1 against his division rival.

Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt remains a low-end RB3/flex option ahead of his Week 6 matchup with the Detroit Lions. For the most part, Hunt has played behind backfield mate Isiah Pacheco in terms of snaps. However, the veteran boasts more carries (43) and yards (164) than Pacheco, and has the team's goal-line role on lockdown. With that said, the 30-year-old's workload has been limited, as he has yet to see more than 14 touches in a single contest.

Furthermore, Kansas City has been one of the more pass-happy teams in the league, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes leads the team in rushing (190). Hunt is a fine start considering his touchdown upside, but he has yet to eclipse 5.7 fantasy points in the appearances he didn't hit pay dirt.

Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots

New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson is poised for an increased workload moving forward. Through five games, Stevenson has totaled 293 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns on 51 carries, leading all New England running backs in usage. With Antonio Gibson (knee) suffering a season-ending injury, both Stevenson and rookie TreVeyon Henderson are expected to see expanded roles. While Stevenson has battled ball-security issues over the past two seasons, he remains the favorite for early-down and goal-line work.

Henderson, meanwhile, should see his role grow in the passing game, giving him PPR appeal in deeper formats. Both backs carry fantasy value moving forward, and each should be rostered in all leagues as the Patriots' backfield reshapes for the rest of the season.

Kenneth Gainwell, Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell exploded in Week 4's game in Ireland, but fantasy managers should temper expectations moving forward. With Jaylen Warren sidelined against the Minnesota Vikings, Gainwell took full advantage of the opportunity, racking up 134 total yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries.

With Warren practicing ahead of Week 6, the former Eagles back will return to his RB2 role in the offense. A tough Week 6 matchup against the Cleveland Browns looms large, as Cleveland has allowed the fewest rushing yards in the NFL through five weeks. Even if he continues to earn touches behind Warren, Gainwell remains a risky fantasy start this week.

Kendre Miller, New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller should be rostered in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 6. The rookie has seen his workload steadily increase, logging back-to-back games with double-digit carries and totaling 119 yards and a touchdown over that span. Starting running back Alvin Kamara suffered an ankle injury during Wednesday's practice, putting his status for the Week 6 matchup against the New England Patriots in question. Even if Kamara suits up, his workload could be limited, giving Miller a strong chance to see meaningful touches once again.

Beyond the short-term upside, Miller offers long-term appeal as well. Trade rumors have begun to swirl around Kamara, with reports suggesting the Saints could move him to a contending team before the deadline. If that happens, Miller would immediately step into a featured role. With both injury uncertainty and potential trade movement ahead, Miller should be added in all formats before his price skyrockets.

Rico Dowdle, Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik alluded to more of a platoon at running back after Rico Dowdle's 200-yard explosion in Week 5 against Miami, according to David Newton of ESPN. The OC said Dowdle having so much success is a "good problem to have" when Hubbard (calf) returns from injury. Hubbard, who didn't practice on Wednesday, had been the clear top option for the Panthers, playing in 50-plus percent of the team's offensive snaps every week he appeared.

But after Dowdle went for 206 rushing yards, a touchdown, and three catches for another 28 yards, the team obviously liked what it saw. Managers should prepare for the possibility that both backs will play going forward for Carolina.
