Closers Fantasy Baseball Analysis, Waiver Wire Pickups
Don't forget to check our daily updates on the closer depth charts if you have more questions and want even more names!!
Tanner Scott, Los Angeles Dodgers (48% rostered)
Scott looks set to remain the top choice to close in Los Angeles. However, we know manager Dave Roberts loves to mix and match, and he could do that here, with other guys like Blake Treinen and Kyle Hurt also getting some chances.
Gregory Soto, Pittsburgh Pirates (43% rostered)
Soto is the clear closer in Pittsburgh now, earning saves in his last two appearances. The lefty now has six saves to go with three wins, a 2.13 ERA, a 0.79 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts in 25 innings. Given Dennis Santana's season-long struggles, Soto is the guy for the Pirates. See his box below; he's good.
Jacob Latz, Texas Rangers (33% rostered)
Latz has quietly done a nice job closing in Texas. He picked up another save on Tuesday, surrendering a home run but getting four outs. Latz now has six saves to go with a tidy 2.16 ERA, a 0.60 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts in 25 innings.
Latz has a solid hold on the job and could remain in the role a long time, given that Jakob Junis and Tyler Alexander are best used in setup roles, and former part-time closer Chris Martin has struggled to remain healthy and effective.
Grant Taylor, Chicago White Sox (12% rostered)
Taylor continues to pitch well in every role the White Sox use him in this year. The young bullpen stalwart has pitched in multiple roles for the budding Sox this year, and he has a save, three holds, a 2.36 ERA, and a 34.8% K%. Taylor has even started four games.
With current closer Seranthony Dominguez showing a bloated 4.35 ERA despite having 11 saves, Taylor, at the very least, is their highest leverage reliever and could find himself earning more save chances if Dominguez continues to struggle in the role.
Ian Seymour, Tampa Bay Rays (11% rostered)
While it is obvious that Bryan Baker remains the top guy in Tampa Bay, Seymour would be in the conversation for save chances if Baker needed a night off. Last week, Seymour had a win, a save, and a hold. Don't be fooled by his 4.50 ERA.
Check out the box below. I like relievers who have high chase percentages, and you can see that Seymour is doing that at a high rate this season. Over his last seven outings, he has two saves, a win, and two holds, with a 3.52 ERA. Roster Seymour and get rewarded.
Kyle Finnegan, Detroit Tigers (8% rostered)
Finnegan could be the next in line to replace the injured Kenley Jansen. Finnegan has a win and a save this season, with a 1.75 ERA despite a K - BB rate of -3.7%. Despite those numbers, saves are what count most for closers in our game. Expect Finnegan to get some chances.
While I like Finnegan in the short term due to his experience closing, do not sleep on Drew Anderson, who has actually been pitching better than Finnegan this season.
Caleb Kilian, San Francisco Giants (9% rostered)
Kilian is the closer in San Francisco right now, and he should be rostered more than he is at this time. He has the only save chance this week for the Giants, and his three saves now lead the team. Kilian has a 2.22 ERA and a 26.8% K% in 22 games this season.
While the Giants are not good this season, someone will get saves, and right now, that guy getting saves is Kilian, and he has done the job.
Kirby Yates, Los Angeles Angels (8% rostered)
Granted, the situation in Los Angeles is not a great one. But I expect Yates to be the next man up and the last man standing. He got the last save chance on Saturday night, but may be in a committee with Sam Bachman and Ryan Zeferjahn.
Yates has the most experience in the job, and Bachman and Zeferjahn have one save between them. Look for the Angels to use Yates in the role for the foreseeable future.
Kyle Hurt, Los Angeles Dodgers (1% rostered)
Hurt is the number one setup guy, along with Alex Vesia, and could get chances for the Dodgers. Hurt has a hold, a win, and a save in the last week. On the season, he has a win, a save, three holds, and a 31.3 % K% in 17 games, surrendering only two runs.
Hurt is interesting because he could find himself getting save chances on nights Scott is off, or in games in which Scott comes in early to put out a fire. Hurt could easily get five or six saves in this fashion while Edwin Diaz remains out with his elbow injury.
Drew Anderson, Detroit Tigers (1% rostered)
Anderson should also be in the conversation for closing with the aforementioned Jansen down for a few weeks. The veteran landed a 45-pitch save on Sunday and a 35-pitch win on Wednesday. Anderson has been excellent and could share save chances with Finnegan. See his May splits below.
Short Relief: More Closers and Bullpen Notes
-Josh Hader continues to build up on his rehab assignment. He has thrown five scoreless innings with three hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts in his five rehab outings at Double-A and Triple-A. The southpaw should be activated from the 60-day injured list in the coming days, maybe even this weekend.
-The situation in Minnesota is wild to watch, where four different pitchers earned saves over the last week. Yoendrys Gomez leads the team with three saves now. Unless you are desperate, avoid this bullpen right now.
-No clarity in Cincinnati this week, where as many as five relievers could stake a claim to the save opportunity any night of the week. Graham Ashcraft, Tony Santillan, Pierce Johnson, Brock Burke, and Tejay Antone all have at least one save. Good luck here.
-I think Trevor Megill is ready to step into the closer role in Milwaukee, which would allow the team to deploy Abner Uribe as a weapon at other points in the game. Megill has the only save this week for the Brew Crew.
