Should I pickup Trey Benson or Bam Knight as fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 13 of 2025? Read our fantasy football waiver wire outlooks.
Arizona Cardinals running back Trey Benson (ankle) still hasn't played in a game since injuring his knee back in Week 4. The starting RB for the Cardinals, in the meantime, has been Bam Knight.
It's still unclear when Benson will return. Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon has been frustratingly insistent on not giving out information about the second-year pro.
That likely leaves fantasy managers in a conundrum for Week 12. Should they pick up Benson or snag Knight for one more rodeo? Let's dive in.

Trey Benson Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook
Benson had his 21-day practice window opened up ahead of Week 11. He was eventually ruled out for the game, though. Still, this at least means the team has to elevate him to the active roster ahead of Week 13, or he'll go on season-ending injured reserve. Teams know this and plan around it.
His return seems more likely this week, but it's possible he won't come back until the week after. It's annoying that we still don't know the exact injury he suffered, but we at least know it's very likely it wasn't season-ending.

Benson is clearly quite explosive when healthy. We won't know how healthy he'll be when he returns, though. Often, players take time to ramp up to full activity in practice, and even in their first game or two back, they're not very productive, as they're continuing to heal.
Bam Knight Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook
Knight is nearing the end of his usefulness as anything more than a handcuff in fantasy football this season. Once Benson returns, it's hard to see Knight having much of a role. In the one game in Week 4 after starting RB James Conner (ankle) went down with a season-ending injury, Benson nearly had the backfield to himself.
He had 13 of 14 running back opportunities until very late in the fourth quarter, after he suffered his injury, when pass-catching Cardinals RB Emari Demercado started getting work. Backup Michael Carter had one touch in the first half.

Knight's value comes from his early-down role and getting work at the goal line. In the seven games since Benson's injury, he's run for five touchdowns and had a streak of three straight games with a TD and another with two straight.
That role will probably evaporate pretty quickly when a fully healthy Benson returns, rendering him mostly unstartable in fantasy.
Should I Pickup Trey Benson or Bam Knight For Fantasy Football?
Benson is the pickup to make. If you're lucky enough to be in a league where he was dropped, you should use your waiver claim or blow a good amount of your FAAB on him. A starting RB in a role like his on an offense that's actually capable of moving the ball is very valuable to roster.
And he should be started when he returns, as well. The Cardinals' offense is likely to struggle down the road, as they'll have to face tougher defenses moving forward, as they just faced two of the softest pass defenses. Still, the RB position is so difficult to get an edge in.

For example, Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle hardly got any rushing work in Week 12, absolutely inexplicably, as the Panthers know he's capable of putting together massive performances; he averaged over six yards per carry, and the game was never completely out of reach.
Having an RB with a coaching staff that doesn't decide to take the ball out of his hands is incredibly important. Benson will be a crucial starter down the stretch, and you need to pick him up if he's available. RB injuries can destroy fantasy teams. There's no such thing as having too many good RBs on your roster.
