The Houston Astros reinstated right-hander
J.P. France (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday. France last pitched in the majors on April 23, 2024, and underwent surgery to repair a capsule tear in his throwing shoulder in July 2024. The 30-year-old has combined for five rehab starts at three minor-league levels this season and recorded an 8.31 ERA with 15 hits allowed and 15:13 K:BB in 13 innings. With France at the end of his 30-day rehab window and struggling in the minors, the Astros elected to keep him in Triple-A to continue working back from surgery. France combined for 29 appearances (28 starts) with the Astros from 2023-24 and went 11-9 with a 4.40 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, and 123 strikeouts against 59 walks over 161 2/3 innings.

Boston Red Sox right-hander
Walker Buehler is in danger of losing his spot in the team's starting rotation and shifting to the bullpen, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. While Buehler is tentatively scheduled to make his next start on Monday in Baltimore, the Red Sox could instead use him in relief in this weekend's series against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox signed Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million guarantee in free agency last offseason, but the former Los Angeles Dodger hasn't delivered as hoped. Buehler, 31, has recorded just seven quality starts in 22 tries and gone 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.86 WHIP, and 82:54 K:BB in 110 innings.
Richard Fitts and minor leaguers Payton Tolle and Connelly Early are among the candidates to take Buehler's starting job, Cotillo reports.

Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever
Seth Halvorsen (elbow) still has a chance to return this season. Halvorsen, on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 3 with a flexor strain, will continue rehabbing until the Rockies determine next steps in approximately 10 days. The hard-throwing 25-year-old leads the Rockies in saves (11), though the rest of his numbers leave plenty to be desired. Halvorsen has pitched to a 4.99 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP and 36 strikeouts against 21 walks in 39 2/3 innings.
Victor Vodnik, another 25-year-old righty who possesses elite velocity, has taken over as Colorado's primary closer in Halvorsen's absence and converted all four of his save chances in August.

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman
Max Muncy (oblique) began taking swings off a tee on Thursday and didn't feel any discomfort in his strained right oblique, manager Dave Roberts said. Muncy is "trending in the right direction" six days after the Dodgers placed him on the 10-day injured list, according to Roberts. The 34-year-old is dealing with a Grade 1 strain, meaning he could make a relatively quick return from the IL. Muncy has gone on the shelf twice this season - previously for a bone bruise in his left knee - but has put up terrific production when healthy. Over 89 games and 347 plate appearances, Muncy has slashed .258/.389/.491 with 17 homers, 64 RBI, 44 runs scored, and four stolen bases. The Dodgers have turned to the struggling

Baltimore Orioles right-hander
Brandon Young (hamstring) exited his start against the Houston Astros on Thursday with discomfort in his left hamstring, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. That added injury to insult for Young, who was roughed up for seven earned runs on nine hits and two walks (one strikeout) over 5 1/3 innings. Young posted his best start of 2025 against Houston last Friday, when he threw eight shutout innings of one-hit ball in a 7-0 victory, but this has mostly been a season to forget for the 27-year-old. Young has made 12 starts and gone 1-6 with a 6.24 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, and 47:22 K:BB in 57 2/3 innings.

The Atlanta Braves placed shortstop
Luke Williams (oblique) on the injured list on Thursday with a strained left oblique. The severity of the injury is not yet known. Williams has not had a plate appearance since August 9. The 29-year-old was slashing .103/.156/.172 with two extra-base hits, five RBI, five runs scored, and four stolen bases in 32 plate appearances this season. More notably, Williams was used by the Braves as a mop-up position player/pitcher out of the bullpen, pitching in six games. Over those six games, he threw six innings, had a 3.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and four strikeouts.

The San Francisco Giants transferred left-hander
Erik Miller (elbow) to the 60-day injured list on Thursday. Miller, who has been sidelined with a left elbow strain, suffered a setback on his rehab assignment last week. The 27-year-old is eligible to come off the injured list in September. However, he will not be throwing for the next few weeks, with his season likely being over. Miller did pitch well over 36 outings this year from the bullpen, posting a (4-1) record with a 1.50 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, and a strand rate of 89.4%

The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday that rookie infielder
Marcelo Mayer (wrist) underwent a successful right-wrist arthroscopy. Dr. Matthew Leibman performed the procedure. The 22-year-old initially sprained his wrist in late July. He had a subsequent cortisone shot, tried extended rest, and still ended up needing surgery anyway. Mayer has now had season-ending injuries in each of the last three years. The Red Sox's top prospect had a shoulder injury in 2023 and a back injury in 2024. Recovery time for the surgery is three months, and he should be healthy heading into spring training. When healthy this year, Mayer slashed .228/.272/.402 and with a 30.1% strikeout rate in 136 plate appearances.

Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) will make at least one more rehab start before being activated from the injured list. The southpaw is rehabbing from a strained right oblique and has already made two rehab appearances while getting his pitch count up to 50. Stuart Fairchild (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Thursday. Fairchild has been on the IL since July 23 with a strained right oblique. The 29-year-old has not yet resumed baseball activities since then and would be eligible to return from the IL the last week of the season. Fairchild has been limited to only 28 games this year due to the injury. When he was on the field, he slashed .273/.333/.606 with two stolen bases, both of which were in one game.

Kirby Yates (back) is expected to be activated from the injured list on Saturday. He has been out since the end of July with a lower back issue and is now on a rehab assignment. The 38-year-old is expected to make one more rehab appearance prior to his activation. With
Tanner Scott (elbow) also on the way back, Yates may land in only a setup role when he returns. The veteran right-hander has three saves this year in 39 appearances, along with 13 holds, and a K/9 of 12.64 this year. He may vulture some saves down the stretch for the Dodgers and is mainly an option in leagues that reward saves and holds.

Craig Kimbrel is signing an undisclosed deal with the Houston Astros on Thursday and will be joining the major-league roster, a source tells Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Texas Rangers granted Kimbrel his release on Thursday, and it didn't take long for the 37-year-old veteran to find a new team to pitch for down the stretch in 2025. He has only thrown one innning in the big leagues this year with the Atlanta Braves, and there's no guarantee he'll stick around with the Astros through the end of the season. Josh Hader (shoulder) expected to miss the the rest of the regular season, the Astros are turning to a veteran with 440 career saves for some depth for their bullpen. At best, Kimbrel might be a late-inning arm for Houston, and
