PGA DFS: DraftKings Fantasy Golf Sleeper Picks and Advice for the Deutsche Bank Championship

Last weekend was a rough one. Will Wilcox floundered among a below average week. Jason Day continued his hot streak, winning The Barclays by six strokes at 19-under. Day has passed Jordan Spieth for number one on the FedEx Cup Standings. 100 golfers are now left to play in the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. Only 70 will make it to the BMW Championship. Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner, Luke Donald, and Will Wilcox are all notable names that are outside the top 70 aiming to get in.

The course is extremely easy, playing to 7,214 yards, par 72. In the last seven years Henrik Stenson, Charley Hoffman and Vijay Singh shot a course record 22-under. Two holes stand out due to their short length: the par 5 542 yard second and the par 4 298 yard fourth. Look for the winner to shoot better than 20-under. The overall best scores the last 6 years at TPC Boston are Day -64, Furyk -54, Kuchar -53, Senden -53, and Dufner -52.

Chris Kirk is the defending champion, but mostly big names win this tournament. In the past the likes of Henrik Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods have won this tournament. For your lineups try to get three big names and play three cheap fliers. Also note this tournament begins on Friday and ends on Monday, Labor Day.

Editor's Note: Our Partner DraftKings is hosting another huge Fantasy Gold tournament on September 4th. The $450K Drive to the Green is free to enter, and it dishes out $100K to the first place finisher!  If you sign up and make a deposit now, you’ll get a 100% bonus on your first DraftKings deposit and we’ll also give you free access to RotoBaller’s Premium 2015 Fantasy Football NFL Draft Kit (a $49.99 value).

PGA DFS Advice – Stats To Look At

-Ball striking
-Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green
-Strokes Gained Putting
-Par 5 Scoring Average
-Birdie Average

PGA DFS High-Priced DraftKings Picks ($9,000-$11,800)

I firmly believe that many high-priced players, except for Zach Johnson and maybe Jim Furyk, will all play well this week. The following are my top choices.

Jason Day ($11,800)

-Ball striking: 28
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 8
-Strokes Gained Putting: 2
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 10
-Birdie Average: 1
-FedEx Cup Standing: 1
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: T7 10-under

Three weeks ago many wondered if Day would ever win a major. Now, he is in the discussion for best player in the world. He won the PGA and followed that win with a blowout win at The Barclays. Day’s extraordinary putting has been a main reason he is playing this well. He has been outperforming his high value by 107% since The British Open and is currently the hottest player on tour. He is my pick to win.

Jordan Spieth ($11,300) / Rory McIlroy ($11,200)

For lineup purposes I would pair Day/Spieth, Day/McIlroy, or McIlroy/Spieth with 2-3 fliers. Try and get as many big names in your lineup as you can.

Henrik Stenson ($10,500)

-Ball striking: 1
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 2
-Strokes Gained Putting: 22
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 43
-Birdie Average: 29
-FedEx Cup Standing: 4
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: T26 6-under

Stenson finished runner up last week at 13-under. He won these tournament two years ago at 22-under en route to becoming FedEx Cup Champion. His ball striking ability and length will really come in handy on this course. I would bet that a Day/Stenson finish would happen again this week.

Justin Rose ($10,200)

-Ball striking: 4
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 6
-Strokes Gained Putting: 75
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 5
-Birdie Average: 3
-FedEx Cup Standing: 8
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

Rose had himself one wild tournament. He opened with a 7-over 77 and it looked like he was done. He bounced back in rounds 2 and 3 shooting 5-under and 7-under rounds, but didn’t have enough gas in the final round, as he shot even par. Expect Rose to have a good four rounds of play this week and be in contention on Sunday.

Bubba Watson ($9,800) is a perfect alternative if you cannot afford Rose. Watson is number one in Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green and par 5 scoring average. He is also fifth in birdie average.

PGA DFS Mid-Priced DraftKings Picks ($7,000-$8,900)

Brooks Koepka ($8,700)

-Ball striking: 15
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 22
-Strokes Gained Putting: 11
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 4
-Birdie Average: 17
-FedEx Cup Standing: 16
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

I got off the Koepka bandwagon at the perfect time by not choosing him last week, as he missed the cut at The Barclays. Hopefully that bad showing will keep people away from picking him this week. Before last week he had made the top 25 in eight straight starts and registered three top 10 finishes in a row. He has not missed back-to-back cuts since July of last year. There is no reason to think he will miss this cut.

Robert Streb ($8,000)

-Ball striking: 21
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 26
-Strokes Gained Putting: 21
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 57
-Birdie Average: 20
-FedEx Cup Standing: 9
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: T9 9-under

Streb teased me all of last weekend. I put him in my lineup where he made the cut shooting 4-under for the first two rounds, but on the weekend he shot 3-over. He finished with a mere 61.5 fantasy points. Streb has been outperforming his value by 109% since The British Open. Before last week @therealstrebber had made five straight top 20’s, look for him to finish in the top 20 this week.

Justin Thomas ($7,900)

-Ball striking: 29
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 18
-Strokes Gained Putting: 109
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 2
-Birdie Average: 7
-FedEx Cup Standing: 30
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

Thomas tied for 16th last week, shooting a five-under for the tournament. He has four top 20’s in his past five starts, and his stats show he can birdie these short holes with ease. Let’s hope he isn’t thinking too much about his alma mater this week.

Russell Henley ($7,800)

-Ball striking: 33
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 113
-Strokes Gained Putting: 5
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 57
-Birdie Average: 29
-FedEx Cup Standing: 49
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: T2 13-under

Henley made the cut last week, shooting a 2-over, but was dreadful on the weekend, finishing 10-over, last among players who made the cut. Most people will be avoiding Henley this week, but his runner up finish and the lack of ownership make him a solid play.

Jason Bohn ($7,300)

-Ball striking: 44
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 34
-Strokes Gained Putting: 27
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 57
-Birdie Average: 11
-FedEx Cup Standing: 24
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: T35 4-under

Bohn had a great showing at The Barclays; 8-under tied for 9th, his fourth top 15 finish in his last five tournaments. He also led the field last week in proximity to the hole. Bohn has been outperforming his price by 113% since The British Open and should play well this week with a cheap price tag.

PGA DFS Low-Priced DraftKings Picks ($6,000- $7,000)

Will Wilcox ($6,800)

-Ball striking: 2
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 21
-Strokes Gained Putting: 39
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 90
-Birdie Average: 25
-FedEx Cup Standing: 89
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

Although Wilcox was cut last week, he has three top ten finishes in his last five starts. Many people will avoid Wilcox because he was cut last week, but don’t be one of them. Wilcox needs to play well this week to make next week’s tournament.

Shawn Stefani ($6,700)

-Ball striking: 19
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 40
-Strokes Gained Putting: 80
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 20
-Birdie Average: 17
-FedEx Cup Standing: 36
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: 68 3-over

Stefani is a flier at best and will give you enough flexibility for your lineup. He finished T39, 1-under at The Barclays last week and given his FedEx Cup standing he should be in the BMW next week.

Jim Herman ($6,700)

-Ball striking: 3
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 53
-Strokes Gained Putting: 115
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 51
-Birdie Average: 94
-FedEx Cup Standing: 54
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

Herman has been playing such good golf lately. His price increased $400 this week, but that's not as much as it should have. Since The British Open, Herman has been outplaying his pricing by 135%. Herman finished T18th at the Wyndham and T13th at The Barclays last week. Hopefully this week he finishes top 10.

Bryce Molder ($6,400)

-Ball striking: 115
-Strokes Gained Tee-To-Green: 133
-Strokes Gained Putting: 8
-Par 5 Scoring Average: 141
-Birdie Average: 84
-FedEx Cup Standing: 58
-2014 Deutsche Bank Result: DNP

Molder is another player who has been outperforming his value by more than 100%, 107.8% to be exact, since The British. Molder played great at The Barclays placing T11th at 7-under. Molder is cheap, and I like him as a flier.

James Hahn ($6,200) is another cheap option if you need to save money.
