Fantasy Baseball Second Base (2B) News
JJ Wetherholt, St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals infield prospect JJ Wetherholt is starting at second base and batting fifth on Saturday in the team's Grapefruit League opener against the Washington Nationals, according to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News. The offseason trades of both Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan have cleared a path for Wetherholt to be an everyday player on the infield for St. Louis in 2026, and he's expected to be their Opening Day second baseman.
The 23-year-old is the No. 5 overall prospect in the game, per MLB Pipeline, after hitting .306/.421/.510 with 17 home runs and 23 stolen bases in 109 games last year with Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis.
The former seventh overall pick in 2024 doesn't have an obvious weakness at the plate, although in his first big-league season, fantasy managers should temper expectations for his power and speed. Still, Wetherholt can hit 15-plus homers right away as St. Louis' starting second baseman.
Jorge Polanco, New York Mets
New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said the designated hitter spot will be in play "big" time as the team tries to keep infielder Jorge Polanco healthy in 2026, according to Chelsea Janes of SNY. Mendoza also expects infielders Mark Vientos and Brett Baty to get playing time at first base when Polanco is the DH. The Mets are also slow-playing the 32-year-old switch-hitting Dominican early in Grapefruit League games.
Polanco has played in 100-plus games in six of his 12 seasons in the big leagues, although he did manage to play in 138 contests while hitting .265/.326/.495 with an .821 OPS, 26 home runs, 78 RBI, 64 runs scored, and six steals for the Seattle Mariners last year. Marcus Semien will be locked into Polanco's primary position at second, so most of his at-bats figure to come as New York's DH.
Fantasy managers need to expect Polanco to miss time due to injury in 2026, but when healthy, he hits the ball hard and has solid pop with second base eligibility.
Jordan Westburg, Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg (elbow) has a partially torn UCL but will not have Tommy John surgery, president of baseball operations Mike Elias told Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun. The Orioles will opt for platelet-rich plasma injections. Westburg will at least be out through April, and his timeline after that is to be determined.
Elias added that Westburg's partial UCL tear was deemed a chronic issue, meaning it broke down over time. Baltimore is hoping that the PRP injections will have more success for a position player than a pitcher, given that there is less stress put on the UCL.
The injury obviously is a pretty big hit to Westburg's fantasy value going into the 2026 season, and there's certainly a chance he's out much longer than just one month. In the meantime, Coby Mayo is expected to slide over to third base full-time, with Blaze Alexander also being an option at the hot corner.
Jackson Holliday, Baltimore Orioles
Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday (hand) will get the stitches removed from his surgically repaired right hand on Monday, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN. The former No. 1 pick tore up the minors and debuted in 2024, but struggled upon getting the call. He fared better over a full season in 2025, slashing .242/.314/.375, but he still mustered just 96 wRC+.
He posted a 8.6% walk rate and 21.6% strikeout rate with 17 home runs and 17 stolen bases. Defensively, he contributed -8 OAA and -6 FRV at second base. Still, he was a source of consistency for the Orioles, playing 149 games in the majors. He didn't suffer his hand injury until arriving at spring training this February; during live at-bats nearly two weeks ago, he suffered a broken hamate bone that required surgical removal.
He recently got his cast off, and the stitches will follow next week. At that point, he can begin sweating and gradually resume baseball activities. It's unlikely that he'll be ready for Opening Day, but he's making good progress and figures to return sometime in April. The injury concern dropped Holliday to #15 among second basemen in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.
Jett Williams, Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers infield prospect Jett Williams is trending towards beginning the 2026 season at Triple-A. While Williams appeared in a good position to crack the Opening Day roster following the trade that sent Caleb Durbin to Boston, the Brewers quickly signed veteran infielder Luis Rengifo, who is now penciled in to be their primary third baseman.
While Williams has taken reps at the hot corner alongside his typical position at shortstop in camp, he will likely begin the season with Triple-A, where he can earn everyday at-bats. Williams joined the Brewers earlier in the offseason in the trade that sent right-hander Freddy Peralta to the Mets.
Last season, Williams made his Triple-A debut in the New York pipeline and held a .209/.285/.433 line with seven long balls and two swiped bags over a 34-game stint. While he could still carve out a role, managers should expect the top prospect to begin in the season in Nashville.
Luisangel Acuna, Chicago White Sox
Chicago White Sox infielder/outfielder Luisangel Acuna has made swing tweaks this offseason to "stay loaded in his back leg more" to "allow him to elevate the ball for consistent power," according to James Fegan of Sox Machine.
Acuna, 23, is trying to make the move to center field and carve out a regular role in his first year with the White Sox in 2026. The Venezuelan has appeared in the outfield twice in 109 career major-league games, but he split time more evenly between center and short in recent Venezuelan Winter League action.
Acuna hit .282/.397/.542 with eight homers in a small 39-game sample size in his native country, but he batted .234/.293/.274 with no homers, eight RBI, and 16 steals in 95 games last year with the New York Mets. Making more contact should be a top priority for Acuna, who is favored to start in center field for the Pale Hose on Opening Day. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues will want to take a wait-and-see approach with the younger brother of Ronald Acuna Jr.
