Should I Pickup Ray Davis or Ty Johnson? Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups for Week 10

Ray Davis - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

Should I pickup Ray Davis or Ty Johnson as fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 10 of 2025? Read our fantasy football waiver wire outlooks.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook (ankle/foot) is currently dealing with a lower-leg injury that he suffered late in his team's Week 9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai and Carolina Panthers RB Rico Dowdle proved that it pays off to churn backup running backs through your rosters in redraft leagues. When the starter gets injured, you can get a free starting RB that can help you win your matchups.

RBs Ray Davis and Ty Johnson are the two players behind Cook on the depth chart, so they'll likely be called upon if Cook can't suit up for Week 10. But which should you pickup off waivers? Let's dive in.

Ray Davis Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook

Davis is likely to directly take over Cook's role if Cook can't play. While Johnson sees more snaps than Davis when Cook is healthy, depth charts aren't linear -- a lot of NFL teams like using one player as a pass-catching and pass-blocking RB, while the other main tailback role is to run the football.

Cook has just one reception in his last four games. He hasn't been used much as a pass-catcher. So Davis would likely take his role as the workhorse back while Johnson mixes in a bit. Johnson carried the ball two times for eight yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 16 yards in Week 10, while Davis didn't get any touches.

Davis' start in 2024 against the New York Jets, when Cook wasn't able to play, resulted in 20 carries for 97 yards and three catches for 55 yards, totaling 18.2 PPR fantasy points. Against the extremely vulnerable Miami Dolphins run defense, he could have another big day if he gets the starting nod.

Ty Johnson Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlook

Johnson, to me, is the Bills version of Arizona Cardinals running back Emari Demercado. Demercado functions as their passing down back because he's a good blocker and capable pass-catcher. Johnson plays in a similar role for Buffalo. Just because he has more work than Davis when Cook is healthy doesn't mean he'll become the starter.

Instead, he's likely to continue to reprise his role, with Davis handling the bulk of the rushing workload. According to my analysis, Davis is the better pure runner, and he was drafted to fill in the role he has -- a replacement for Cook when Cook can't play.

Johnson occasionally vulturing a touchdown or two doesn't move the needle here. He's not a player any team would want as their workhorse back, according to my analysis.

Should I Pickup Ray Davis or Ty Johnson For Fantasy Football?

It makes the most sense to pick up and stash Davis, and monitor Buffalo's practice reports as the week wears on. If you see Cook upgrade to a full practice or get cleared ahead of the game, you can safely drop Davis. But if that doesn't happen? Congrats, you now have a free starting RB!

It might only last a week even if Cook doesn't play, but that's invaluable for fantasy squads that are hurting at running back. Injuries and bye weeks can make it incredibly difficult to have multiple starting RBs each week that have the potential to score enough points to elevate your teams.

Davis at least has the potential to handle a decent receiving workload too. He's a bigger back that's more capable of running over tacklers and fighting through contact than Cook, who's smaller, shiftier, and quicker. I'd recommend starting Davis as an RB2 in Week 10 if Cook ends up being held out.

The matchup is very nice, and the Dolphins are collapsing as a franchise right now. The Bills should make quick work of them, build up an early lead, and use Davis generously to keep the chains moving, grind down the clock, and potentially score if he gets the opportunity.
