One and Done Selections - American Express

Joe Nicely - Talor Gooch

Alternate - Abraham Ancer

If we’re being honest, the AmEx is one of my least favorite tournaments of the year. A celebrity Pro-Am with few celebrities. Rounds of seven-plus hours. A three-course rotation with no ShotTracker available on two of them. A 54-hole cut. I could go on…but you get the picture.

Anywho, not a huge fan of the AmEx. As a result, I can’t make myself burn Jon Rahm or Patrick Cantlay this week, the two players with the most win equity in this field. I also don’t want to take a Tony Finau or an Abraham Ancer off the board this early in the season.

Talor Gooch is in the midst of the best stretch of golf of his career. Undoubtedly talented, Gooch has struggled with inconsistency during his time on the PGA Tour but capped off an impressive fall swing with a victory at the RSM Classic. He’s managed to carry that form into 2022 by putting together solid outings at both the Sentry Toc and the Sony Open. The OSU alum now brings that momentum to an event that’s historically been one of his best. He’s made four straight cuts in the AmEx, posting a fourth-place finish in 2019 with top-25s in each of the last two years. He’s not Rahm or Cantlay, but this ain’t the Masters or Memorial. Gooch seems like a nice compromise.

Spencer Aguiar - Sungjae Im

Alternate - Jason Day

We seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to our pick for the American Express, which immediately made me think it might be time to unleash the Gooch, but we don't need any more sexual references from me this week. I have done my fair share when publically fantasizing about Jason Day's victory. Talk about rock and hard...

But none of that exactly helps us on what to do in California. Part of me believes Jon Rahm will run away with this title, making any selection worse from the beginning. These OAD contests are always tricky to maneuver through because you never want to waste a choice that might come back to bite you in the future, but I decided to roll with Sungjae Im for a few reasons.

Most importantly, I don't have a natural place to use him this season. You typically would like to play Sungjae on a Bermuda track, but I believe this Poa overseeded texture can be conducive for all golfers. And secondly, the options around him presented some issues of their own. Should we trust Scottie Scheffler in his first start of 2022? Maybe? But it sounds like a better outright. The same sentiment goes to Tony Finau, who might be in play next week at Torrey after getting a few days under his belt. And all of that kept leaving me with realistic choices of Sungjae, Gooch, Rose, Si Woo and Day. I have enough exposure to the Aussie this week that I don't think my heart could handle any more stress. Si Woo and Rose are fun picks to make in larger contests, but there is no guarantee they will come into play during a one-pick, 30ish-week event. And then we have the same dilemma that keeps coming into play of Sungjae or Gooch? When you are in between two areas, you are typically in the Gooch wheelhouse, but I don't need this week to turn into a mess. Sungjae should be able to bounce back at the AMEX.

Yearly Earnings - $189,375

Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Owen Vrabel - Abraham Ancer

Alternate -

Getting this pick out of the way early in the season. After a brutal start, with Sungjae missing the cut last week, looking to get back on track with my boy Abe. Ancer loves these short tracks (i.e RBC Heritage at Harbour Town) and I expect him to bounce back with the putter at a course he loves. In his last 3 finishes at the American Express, he's finished 18th, runner-up and 5th. I'll be enjoying some nice Flecha Azul tequila on Sunday afternoon as Abe closes the door on his second PGA tour victory.

Yearly Earnings - $0

Yearly Cuts Made - 0/1

Matt Miller - Sungjae Im

Alternate -

I considered a few different options this week but settled on Sungjae Im. Sungjae caught the early flight home from Hawaii last weekend after missing the cut at the Sony Open. I'm willing to overlook it since he played well, finishing T8 two weeks ago at the Tournament of Champions. I'd actually prefer to think that he was just saving his birdies for this week.
In three previous appearances at this event, Sungjae has never finished worse than 12th. It makes sense given the short course and birdie fest setup. Sungjae is 10th in the field over his last 24 rounds on courses under 7200 yards. All three courses in the rotation this week play under 7200 yards. Sungjae also knows how to put up birdies in bunches. He won the Shriners Children's Open in October with a winning score of -24. In fact, Sungjae has shot -20 or better in four of his last eight starts on tour. Five of nine sounds even better to me, I fully expect to see the young star in the mix come Sunday this week.

Yearly Earnings - $35,700

Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Josh Bennett - Sungjae Im

Alternate - Adam Hadwin

Rough start for me with Webb last week. Maybe that was some kind of karma for all the times I’ve tried to play him illegally in the past. Anyways, on to the American Express where nobody knows anything. Heck, the internet can’t even agree on what kind of grass they’re playing on.

Here’s one thing I do know. Sungjae is playing some fantastic golf lately (other than last week) and through all the noise this tournament brings, he’s finished 12th or better all three of his attempts at it. Seems pretty good to me. He can score in a birdie fest if it becomes one, he’s also very accurate and will be able to keep himself away from the trees and bunkers for the most part to increase his scoring chances. Looking like a great spot for a bounce-back week for both Sungjae and my OAD squad.

Yearly Earnings - $16,800

Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1

Andrew Putters - Matthew Wolff

Alternate - Abraham Ancer

Matthew Wolff chose not to go to Hawaii, so the AMEX will be his 2022 debut. He seems to have gotten back into a rhythm back in the fall, logging a couple of top-10s and never finishing outside the top-20. As far as his game goes, he crushes par 5s and is a birdie machine, which will be important to be successful on the trio of golf courses at La Quinta Country Club this weekend.

Yearly Earnings - $49,250

Yearly Cuts Made - 1/1
