John Mateer Officially Questionable Ahead of Saturday's Game vs. Texas
The first SEC injury report lists Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (hand) as questionable to play against Texas. Mateer underwent hand surgery on September 24, with recovery time initially listed as 3-4 weeks. Mateer's hand has healed well, leading to speculation that he would be able to play in the Red River Shootout against unranked Texas at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on Saturday. That is just 17 days after the surgery. Mateer's questionable status is not a guarantee that he will play, but it does mean that he is available should Oklahoma choose to use him. Betting lines open with Texas as a 3.5-point favorite, but they flipped to Oklahoma early Wednesday afternoon, further fueling the speculation that Mateer will be available. Oklahoma is required to issue another availability report 90 minutes before the 3:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff on Saturday afternoon.

North Carolina Discussing Buyout Option Of Coach Bill Belichick
North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick and members of North Carolina University are in discussion about exercising the $1 million buyout option of Belichick. Belichick was signed to a 5-year, $50 million contract last offseason, much of which was performance-based. The Tar Heels are currently 2-3 and have been outscored 120-33 in three games against Power 4 opponents. Belichick has reportedly agreed to the buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in the media. The media seems more likely given the struggles of North Carolina this year. Allegations of serious recruiting violations are already being investigated, and several UNC assistant coaches have already contacted other schools about consulting jobs on the staff. North Carolina is using the recruiting violations to negotiate a much-reduced buyout rate. The expectation is that Belichick will trigger his own $1 million buyout. The buyout could be finalized during this week, which is North Carolina's bye week.

John Mateer Likely to Play Against Texas?
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer (hand) is pushing to play in the Red River Shootout against Texas this weekend, and there is a belief that his return is possible, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. The Heisman Trophy candidate underwent hand surgery following the Week 4 win over Auburn, but he has reacted well to the procedure. Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. started in the blowout win over Kent State last week following the team's bye. In four games this season, Mateer has completed over 67% of his passes for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions. He's added 190 yards and five scores as a runner. Needless to say, his availability in Week 7 is a significant storyline ahead of one of the sport's best rivalry games. Although Texas has had notable struggles, Mateer's status could determine who walks away with a victory on Saturday.

Jermod McCoy Unlikely to Play Against Arkansas
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said cornerback Jermod McCoy (knee) "continues to do a great job in his rehab," but he did not provide a specific return timeline. The 2024 first-team All-SEC selection suffered a torn ACL early in the offseason and has yet to appear in a game this season. According to sources that spoke to On3's Pete Nakos and Chris Low, McCoy is not expected to play against Arkansas this Saturday. While the Vols getting their best player back for the matchup against Taylen Green and Arkansas this weekend would be a great development for a struggling defense, it would be even more significant if he can return for the Week 8 outing against Alabama for the Third Saturday in October matchup. Tennessee currently ranks last in the SEC in passing yards allowed per game (259.2). A matchup against Germie Bernard and Ryan Williams in Tuscaloosa could prove problematic without McCoy's services.

Conner Weigman in Concussion Protocol
Houston Cougars quarterback Conner Weigman (head) is in concussion protocol, according to head coach Willie Fritz. The junior signal caller exited Saturday's loss to Texas Tech early and did not return. Fritz said he is optimistic about Weigman's chances to suit up against Oklahoma State in Week 7. If he can't play, Zeon Chriss, who threw 93 yards last week, would be in line to start. Through the team's first five games, Weigman has completed just under 60% of his passes for 910 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions. He's added 148 yards and four scores on the ground. Houston suffered its first defeat of the season in Week 6 against a dominant Red Raiders team, but the program is still in the race for the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff contention.

Florida State's Quindarrius Jones Set for Season-Ending Surgery
Florida State cornerback Quindarrius Jones (undisclosed) suffered a season-ending injury early in the loss to Miami on Saturday, according to head coach Mike Norvell. He is set to undergo surgery this week and begin the road to recovery. Jones tallied seven tackles (five solo) and one pass deflection through the team's first five games of the season as a rotational defensive back. "Obviously unfortunate news for him, unfortunate news for us," Norvell said. "I know he'll bounce back from it, but it's just one of those things that it does shake up our defensive backfield." The Noles likely cannot afford another loss if they want to play in the College Football Playoff, but they will likely be favored in all seven of their remaining games. Next up for Florida State is a home stand against Pittsburgh in Week 7.

Mark Gronowski Viewed as Day-to-Day with Knee Injury
Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski (knee) is day-to-day with a knee injury, according to Pete Nakos of On3Sports. The fifth-year senior and South Dakota State transfer's status is uncertain for the Week 7 Big Ten contest against the Wisconsin Badgers. Through five games with the Hawkeyes, Gronowski has completed just over 64% of his passes for 636 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. He hasn't had as big an impact as many had hoped in the preseason, but his availability could make the difference between a win and a loss, especially with a game against Penn State coming up in Week 8. If he can't go on Saturday, former Auburn quarterback Hank Brown would be in line to start.

Quintrevion Wisner Expected Back vs. Florida
Texas Longhorns running back Quintrevion Wisner (hamstring) has been upgraded to probable for Saturday's matchup against the Florida Gators, giving the offense a significant boost as SEC play begins. Wisner went down with a hamstring injury in the season-opening loss to Ohio State but was impressive in limited action, leading the team with 16 carries for 80 yards in that game. Despite missing time, he still paces all Texas running backs with a 5.0 yards-per-carry average. His return should allow the Longhorns to lean more heavily on their ground game while keeping fellow backs CJ Baxter and Jerrick Gibson fresh with rotational touches. With Wisner back in the fold, Texas gains a dynamic runner who can help balance the offense and provide stability as they look to open conference play with momentum.

Emmett Mosley Probable for Longhorns vs. Florida
Texas Longhorns sophomore wide receiver Emmett Mosley (leg) is expected to make his season debut on Saturday against the Florida Gators. The Stanford transfer, who suffered a lower-leg injury during preseason camp, has yet to appear for the Longhorns but is now listed as probable and trending toward suiting up. Mosley was a reliable playmaker for the Cardinal last year, recording 48 catches for 525 yards and six touchdowns across nine games, and his return adds another weapon to an already dangerous Texas passing attack. With Parker Livingston and Ryan Wingo headlining the receiving corps, Mosley could immediately carve out a role as a secondary option in the offense. His debut comes at a key time as the Longhorns look to kick off conference play with a statement win.

Behren Morton To Start Against Houston Saturday
Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton (neck) was knocked out of the win over Utah two weeks ago. After having a bye last week, Morton is back in the starting lineup for a showdown between undefeated teams on Saturday night in Houston. Morton has completed 69-of-100 passes for 1,065 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions so far this season but was struggling against Utah when he exited the game. Backup quarterback Will Hammond sparked a 34-10 win in what was a close game until Morton left and did not return. The fifth-year senior did not lose his role as the starting quarterback despite strong play from Hammond.

Caden Durham Doubtful for Saturday at Mississippi
LSU's leading rusher Caden Durham is doubtful to play in Saturday's game at No. 13 Mississippi in Oxford. Durham sustained an ankle injury in LSU's 56-10 win over FCS Southeast Louisiana. Durham had seven carries for 17 yards and three receptions for eight yards before exiting the contest. The sophomore from Oklahoma City is LSU's leading rusher this year with 52 carries for 213 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Durham also tallied eight receptions for 39 yards. This hole in the LSU offense will be filled by freshman Harlem Berry. Berry has 15 carries for 87 yards on the season. JuJuan Johnson will also see significant time. Kaleb Jackson is expected to be the backup. LSU Coach Brian Kelly said, "If Caden can't answer the bell, it will be a combination of all three."

Horatio Fields to Undergo Surgery on Broken Foot
Auburn wide receiver Horatio Fields (foot) suffered a broken foot and will undergo surgery to repair it, according to head coach Hugh Freeze. The senior transferred from Wake Forest to Auburn this offseason after catching 44 passes for 517 yards and four touchdowns in 2023 and 2024 with the Demon Deacons. In four games with the Tigers this season, he has tallied 12 receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. With Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. occupying the WR1 and WR2 duties for quarterback Jackson Arnold, sophomore wideout Malcolm Simmons should see more action in Fields' absence. After a close loss to Oklahoma last Saturday, the Tigers are headed to Kyle Field and need to pick up an SEC win to stay in the conference race.

Ole Miss To Start Trinidad Chambliss Against LSU
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is expected to start his third straight game this week as the Rebels host fourth-ranked LSU. The Ferris State transfer has impressed in place of the injured Austin Simmons (ankle) over his previous two starts, defeating Arkansas and Tulane. Chambliss has completed 42-of-62 passes for 719 yards and four touchdowns on the season, adding 195 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He has looked better than Simmons did, and could earn the starting role full-time with another impressive performance this week under a national spotlight.

DJ Lagway Spotted in Walking Boot
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway (undisclosed) was spotted in a walking boot following Florida's 26-7 loss at Miami on Saturday night. The Gators have not disclosed the nature of his injury. Lagway was spotted in a walking boot during the offseason due to a calf strain in July. It is unknown if this injury is related. The Gators have a bye this week before facing off against 10th-ranked Texas in The Swamp on October 4. Unnamed sources close to Lagway say that he should be ready to go against Texas, and the boot is just a precaution. Lagway has completed 67.5% (83-of-123) of his passes in 2025 for 690 yards and five touchdowns. He has also thrown six interceptions, but five of those were against LSU.

John Mateer to Undergo Thumb Surgery on Wednesday
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is expected to have thumb surgery on Wednesday to repair his thumb on his right (throwing) hand. He could miss up to a month. Mateer suffered the injury in the first quarter of Oklahoma's 24-17 win over Auburn on Saturday. He was able to stay in the game and finished the day completing 24 of 36 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. The Oklahoma medical staff decided that the best course of treatment was surgery on his thumb. Backup Michael Hawkins Jr. is expected to start for the Sooners against Kent State, Texas, and South Carolina. Hawkins has only thrown three passes this season but started as a freshman last year while Jackson Arnold was injured. Hawkins threw for 783 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 but also had two interceptions. He was sacked six times in the blowout loss to Texas last year.
