Fantasy Football Drop Candidates
Read about fantasy football players to consider dropping for Week 2:
Jake Ferguson, TE, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was targeted just two times in his team's defeat against the New York Giants in their season opener. The entire offense was mostly quiet, though they did score three touchdowns. Ferguson finished the day with only six receiving yards, making him an irrelevant fantasy option. He didn't do much to help propel his team to victory.
In more productive passing games from Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Ferguson may be a more viable starter, but he's firmly behind both WRs CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, who have shown enough talent to easily be the top-2 target earners in Dallas. A matchup with the soft Washington Commanders secondary in Week 2 should afford Ferguson more room to get open and snag passes, but the Giants offense was supposed to be weak as well.
Despite his underwhelming effort in Week 1, Jake Ferguson remains a firm hold in all 12-team leagues heading into Week 2.
Josh Jacobs, RB, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (personal) remains on the commissioner's exempt list, but the NFL could count time spent there as time served for any potential suspension, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Some league sources expect this to be the case in the end.
In the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement, there is a six-game minimum for any type of domestic violence, such as Jacobs' situation. Schefter writes that it could be more or less, depending on mitigating factors. The 28-year-old veteran needs to remain stashed in all fantasy leagues, but fantasy managers may need to be patient before being able to use him in starting fantasy lineups in 2026.
Jacobs is the Packers' unquestioned lead back when healthy and with the team, but to begin the new season, MarShawn Lloyd is slated to operate as the primary option in the backfield while Chris Brooks and newly acquired Kaleb Johnson operate as change-of-pace options. On Sunday, Lloyd saw the majority of the carries and figures to enter Week 2 with a slight lead.
While Jacobs' current situation is still unclear, managers should continue to view him as a top stash option. If the league decides to hand him a suspension, his time on the Commissioner's Exempt List may count toward that, which could set him up for an earlier return.
Ja'Kobi Lane, WR, Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane (wrist) is looking at a multiple-week absence after suffering a fractured wrist during Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts, according to Mike Garafolo. He was removed during his NFL debut and now will likely be sidelined for several weeks.
Lane will undergo further testing to determine the full extent of the injury. He hauled in one of his three targets for 11 yards during his debut. Fellow wideout Zay Flowers (hamstring) was also injured during Sunday's win. Rashod Bateman, Elijah Sarratt, and Devontez Walker could be looking at expanded roles in the offense. Fantasy managers should stay tuned for more updates on Lane's status in the coming days.
While those in deeper leagues with IR spots could look to stash Lane, managers in shallower 10-team leagues can view him as a safe drop entering Week 2.
Najee Harris, RB, New York Giants
New York Giants running back Najee Harris (coach's decision) is a healthy scratch for Sunday's Week 1 contest against the Dallas Cowboys. Harris signed with the Giants last month, offering depth behind Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary. There had been some speculation that Harris might jump as high as No. 2 on the depth chart, but for now, he's the odd man out of this four-man backfield.
The 28-year-old had four consecutive top-24 fantasy finishes in Pittsburgh, but then he went to the Chargers last year and suffered a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 3. Harris should remain off the fantasy radar as long as Skattebo and Tracy are healthy.
While Harris was in the mix to carve out a role in the New York backfield, the coaching staff currently views him as the clear No. 4 option on the depth chart. While he could hold value later in the season, for now, he's best left on the waiver wire.
Sam Darnold, QB, Seattle Seahawks
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold (glute) could miss four to six weeks due to a glute tendon injury. Florio notes that surgery is not anticipated for Darnold, but that the Seahawks will be cautious with their quarterback. Darnold suffered the injury early on in Seattle's 2026 debut, a 13-10 win over the New England Patriots on Wednesday.
The injury was initially feared to be Darnold's hip. Darnold is not expected to be placed on the reserved/injured list as of press time. Drew Lock will operate as Seattle's starting quarterback while Darnold is out.
Managers in one-QB leagues should view Darnold as a safe cut given the projected time he may miss. However, those in deeper superflex formats should view him as a solid stash option while he remains on the sidelines.
