One and Done Selections - Memorial Tournament

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters, Owen Vrabel, Matt Miller and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Rory McIlroy

Alternate - Jon Rahm

The Memorial Day holiday has me running horribly behind this week, but this is a spot where I gained back a little time. As always, this Memorial field is stacked, which gives us plenty of options for the elevated status event. Despite the number of legitimate choices that are available, my decision came rather quickly.

Rory McIlroy is yet to add a Memorial victory to his lengthy resume and it feels like an event that he will eventually snag. After a blistering final round at Augusta National that resulted in a runner-up, the man from Northern Ireland has had a little extra spring in his step over subsequent starts - a T5 at the Wells Fargo and a T8 at the PGA Championship. McIlroy has played beautifully from T2G as of late and that ball-striking excellence should be well rewarded a Muirfield Village on a course where he’s posted top-10s in 40% of his career appearances.

For now, this event feels like a really nice sweet spot for McIlroy, as the course is difficult enough to get rid of the pretenders, but the pressure isn’t at quite the level of a major championship. Baby steps, Rory, baby steps.

Yearly Earnings - $5,857,438
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/19

Josh Bennett - Shane Lowry

Alternate - Joaquin Niemann

Have to be honest with you guys, ever week I see Shane Lowry in the field, he’s one of the first people I “X” out in DFS and never consider him for OAD. However, I can only go so long before the stats keep telling me things and I continue to ignore them because for some reason I decided I didn’t like him. So, I’m not ignoring this week. I think this is a course fit for mid-iron experts, and he’s one of the best at that in this field. Not to mention, he is pretty good on and around the greens, which will be helpful on these challenging greens. The course was redesigned, and since then he has a 6th place finish here, so I think that’s decent enough evidence that his game works here. If you believe in jinxes or mushes, maybe this is the time to fade since I absolutely never play Lowry, but I’m expecting some big points to bump me up closer to the leaders after this week.

Yearly Earnings - $4,955,621
Yearly Cuts Made - 15/19

Spencer Aguiar - Hideki Matsuyama

Alternate - Joaquin Niemann

I am running thin on choices after the board crumbled on me a month ago, but let's try to make the most out of what we have left.

There are some concerns with markets not loving Hideki Matsuyama's upside, but I tend to disagree with the returns we have gotten so far for the Memorial. Matsuyama ranks first in this field when recalculating all non-putting numbers to mimic Muirfield, and he is also one of only three players to find himself inside the top-10 for both weighted par-four and par-five scoring.

The Japanese sensation took down this title in 2014 by losing strokes on the greens, and I wouldn't be shocked if we see him compete again if he can hover anywhere around neutral with the flat stick.

Yearly Earnings - $6,237,031
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/19

Matt Miller - Will Zalatoris

Alternate -

Team Miller is officially on the verge of trouble. I'm not hitting the panic button quite yet, but if a third consecutive pick misses the cut I might as well pack my bags and head for the LIV Golf  Series.
This week I am depending on Will Zalatoris to turn things around. To be honest, I LOVE this spot for him. He is third in the field tee to green over his last 24 rounds and third in ball striking. The putting is his obvious setback, but I saw a bit of a breakthrough at the PGA Championship. He gained over four and a half strokes on the green and made a huge putt on 18 to get himself into the playoff.
Outside of recent strokes gained statistics, Zalatoris seems to thrive at these difficult events. The second-place finish at the PGA stands out, but he also finished T6 at the Masters and had a heartbreaking second-place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year. The 25-year-old has been knocking on the door of a victory for quite some time and this feels like the week to break through and do it.

Yearly Earnings - $4,558,314
Yearly Cuts Made - 13/19

Andrew Putters - Max Homa

Alternate - Cameron Smith

Muirfield Villiage is known as a ball strikers’ paradise. Sounds like Max Homa is my guy. He is top 15 in all of the elements I’m grading this week. The most important grading element is SG APP. He ranks 14th in the last 50 rounds with a little bump up to 11th in the last 12 rounds. Sounds like he’s riding a hot wave. Let’s jump on and ride him in.

Yearly Earnings - $3,119,826
Yearly Cuts Made - 11/19

Owen Vrabel - Collin Morikawa

Yearly Earnings - $7,319,360
Yearly Cuts Made - 17/19
