Jauan Jennings Requests New Contract or Trade - Potential Fantasy Football Impact (2025)

Jauan Jennings - Fantasy Football Rankings, NFL Injury News, DFS Lineup Picks

Dave analyzes the fantasy football impact of a potential Jauan Jennings trade. What teams could acquire Jennings? Will Jennings receive a new contract? What are the potential fantasy football implications?

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings made headlines recently. Reports began circulating that the receiver was seeking a new contract from the team and wished to be traded if San Francisco was unwilling to give him a new deal.

This news was somewhat unexpected and marks the second consecutive offseason that San Francisco has been forced to handle a disgruntled wide receiver upset with his contract. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk held out last summer while seeking a new deal. The team eventually signed Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million deal, but that was a lengthy, drawn-out, and exhausting negotiation that saw Aiyuk nearly dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers before the two sides agreed on a contract. San Francisco likely wants to avoid another situation like that in camp this year, so we should expect to see a resolution fairly soon.

But with huge contracts for Aiyuk, George Kittle, Brock Purdy, Nick Bosa, and Christian McCaffrey already on the books, will the 49ers sign Jennings to a new deal? Can they even financially afford it? Will they honor his trade request or force him to play out his current deal? Let’s break everything down and discuss the potential fantasy football implications as well.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy football rankings for 2025:

Jauan Jennings 2024 Season Review

With the 49ers in need of another pass-catcher following Aiyuk’s unfortunate knee injury last year, Jennings stepped up when the team needed him most. With a 77-975-6 stat line, he finished the 2024 season with career highs in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He would finish 2024 as the PPR WR24.

Jennings also posted some solid advanced metrics. Per Fantasy Points Data Suite, Jennings finished with a 27% targets per route run (TPRR) and a 2.47 yards per route run (YPRR). Jennings also finished 18th in PFF's receiving grade. Among 298 receivers with 75+ routes run, Jennings finished 47th in Fantasy Points Data Suite’s average separation score.

However you slice it, Jennings had a breakout year last year. He proved he can be a reliable target as an X receiver and will look to build upon last year’s breakout in 2025.

Jauan Jennings' Potential Contract Value

Jennings' contract value is tough to gauge. Last year proved he can be a major contributor when called upon, but he still hasn’t cracked 80 receptions or 1,000 receiving yards in his career. In fact, before 2024, Jennings' best statistical season was a 35-416-1 campaign in 2022.

It’s a fair argument to say Jennings hasn’t posted better numbers because he was buried on the depth chart behind Aiyuk, Kittle, and Deebo Samuel Sr. However, the reality is that Jennings is a 28-year-old player coming off a breakout season at age 27. We have seen many players fizzle out after experiencing a sudden one-year surge in stats. From the 49ers' perspective, that will likely drive down the price of any new contract for Jennings.

At age 28, a long-term deal seems unlikely, and as things stand now, the 49ers have just $8.4 million in cap space for 2026. That means it might be more likely that the 49ers trade him away rather than sign him to a new deal.

However, if he does land a new contract, Jennings could be looking at a deal similar to the one Jonnu Smith received after being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith signed a one-year, $12 million deal with Pittsburgh following the trade. Smith’s deal is a good potential barometer for Jennings, as he also wanted a new contract on the heels of a late-career breakout season.

Jennings is slated to make just $7.5 million this year, and it's understandable why he wants a new contract. Perhaps he can land a one-year deal in the $12-$15 million range.

Potential Trade Suitors for Jauan Jennings

Even though we are only a few days away from the start of training camps, there are still plenty of teams in need of another receiver. Jennings is a tough and rugged player. He's a solid enough separator and is willing to do the dirty work in the run game. He’d certainly draw some interest on the trade market.

San Francisco likely wouldn’t trade Jennings inside the division or even the NFC, so let’s examine a few potential AFC suitors.

New England Patriots

The Patriots threw a lot of money Stefon Diggs’ way when they signed him to a three-year, $63.5 million contract in free agency. However, given some questionable antics the team has seen from Diggs this offseason, the Patriots might already regret this signing and could be looking for another option.

Diggs posted solid numbers in eight games for the Houston Texans last year, but he’s a player in decline and is coming off a torn ACL. Rookie Kyle Williams projects more as a flanker/slot receiver, so the team could use someone like Jennings who can hold down the X receiver position.

New York Jets

New York currently has Garrett Wilson as its WR1, followed by, well, not much else. No disrespect meant to the rest of the room, but at this point, the team might as well roll Barney and all the Teletubbies out there for Week 1.

The Jets desperately need a WR2. Jennings could be a perfect complement to Wilson, and his presence would also draw coverage away from Wilson. Jennings would also be an asset in the running game due to his aforementioned willingness as a run blocker. This could make Jennings a particularly appealing option for New York, as they are likely to deploy a run-heavy offense with Justin Fields taking over at quarterback.

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers recently acquired Smith, but the team may not be done shopping. Pittsburgh still has a gaping hole at WR2. These two teams agreed to terms on a deal for Aiyuk last year before the receiver changed his mind at the last second. So, there is a previously working relationship that could lead to a future Jennings trade.

Jennings wouldn’t exactly mesh well with D.K. Metcalf, but he’s a tough-nosed player who feels like a perfect fit for a Mike Tomlin-coached team.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans don’t have many pass catchers behind Calvin Ridley and Chig Okonkwo. Tennessee did sign Tyler Lockett in free agency, but he looks to be a declining player.

This could be a destination for Jennings if the Titans want to continue surrounding rookie quarterback Cam Ward with weapons. Tennessee currently has the third most projected cap space for 2026, so it could, in theory, afford to sign Jennings to an extension if they trade for him.

Fantasy Football Impact if Jauan Jennings is Traded

The fantasy football implications of a Jennings trade could be massive. Depending on where Jennings lands in a trade, he could become a viable WR2 candidate or be relegated to a reserve/bench role.

The real impact would be on the 49ers' side of things. A Jennings trade would clear the way for second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall to function as the team’s WR1 for however long Aiyuk is sidelined to begin the year.

Pearsall started slowly last year following a preseason gunshot wound but closed the year strong by posting a 14-210-2 line on 18 targets over the season’s final two games. In the event of a Jennings trade, Pearsall would soar up draft boards and would certainly go higher than his current FFPC ADP of 98.83 overall.

Tight end George Kittle would also be a prime beneficiary of a Jennings trade. He should see a boost in targets with Jennings out of the picture and would become a very tempting pick in the Rounds 3-4 range of drafts. McCaffrey could also see more targets if Jennings is dealt, but not much would change for him, as the injury risks surrounding McCaffrey would remain.

Purdy’s value could be slightly impacted since he would have one last weapon to work with. However, he would remain a fine target later in drafts for gamers who wait on a quarterback.

Fantasy Football Impact if Jauan Jennings Remains With San Francisco

Suppose Jennings remains with San Francisco, not much changes with how things currently stand. Jennings and Pearsall would remain great value picks at their current ADPs. Kittle would be a fine tight end target, and McCaffrey’s risk/reward prospects remain the same. Purdy would also remain a good quarterback target later in drafts.

We’ll have to wait to see how this situation unfolds to get a better grasp on all the fantasy implications. For now, make sure you follow the RotoBaller newsfeed for updates, as we haven’t heard the last of this story.
