MLB Power Rankings: Every Team from Worst to First

We’ve crossed the halfway point of the season and things are really starting to heat up. Our Power Rankings reflect that as well as there’s been quite a bit of movement from last week. The Astros continued their ascent atop the American League, the Brewers keep surprising people, and the Marlins can’t lose all of a sudden? All that and we have a new number one. Keep reading to see where your favorite team ranks.

30. Colorado Rockies

A tough week for the Rockies was salvaged on Sunday after an 11-inning win over the Brewers. If not for that they’d be winless on the week, though it was a tough ask for them with both the Dodgers and Brewers on the schedule. It doesn’t get much easier for them on Tuesday as the Houston Astros are headed to Coors. But the White Sox visit over the weekend for a showcase of cellar dwellers that love chasing history in the wrong way.

29. Chicago White Sox

Speaking of those White Sox, they’ve actually won three of their last four. They’ve held their opponents to three or fewer runs in each of those games, showing that their pitching staff is actually coming through. Adrian Houser has performed like an ace, pitching to a 1.90 ERA. He may be a potential trade deadline candidate for Chicago alongside Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Benintendi. Houser and Benintendi should net good returns, if traded, while Robert Jr. has been very underwhelming. His trade value won’t be great, especially as he deals with a hamstring injury.

28. Athletics

This week wasn’t the week for the A’s to get back on the right track. A road trip featuring stops in Detroit and the Bronx are never easy asks but they struggled as they were shutout twice on the trip. Jacob Wilson is still leading the AL Rookie of the Year race but he cooled off a bit this week. Maybe his teammate Nick Kurtz will join the race as Kurtz’s 131 wRC+ ranks third among all rookies and is tied with Atlanta’s Drake Baldwin. At least the young guys are providing excitement for A’s fans.

27. Pittsburgh Pirates

After being relatively quiet all season the Pirates decided to make some real noise and swept the Mets over the weekend. None of the games were close either. They won every game by at least seven runs. They scored at least nine in each game and the Mets scored four runs total in the series. The crazy part is Paul Skenes didn’t even pitch in any of these games! Give their pitching staff some credit where credit’s due. They held their own and the offense was on fire. Next up for them is a three-game matchup with their division rival in the St. Louis Cardinals.

26. Washington Nationals

We’ve mentioned a couple times now how exciting of a player James Wood has been for Washington and that you should keep an eye on him. Well, he did something on Sunday that we haven’t seen done since the likes of Barry Bonds. The Angels’ pitching staff walked him intentionally four times as they clearly know how dangerous the young lefty can be. The league is starting to catch up to Wood, but the Nationals still sit at just 35-49 on the season. He’s a major bright spot to what’s otherwise another underwhelming season for Washington.

25. Miami Marlins

The hottest team in the league? After winning seven straight that may not be too farfetched of a thought. Miami is averaged over seven runs per game during their seven-game winning streak. Otto Lopez, Kyle Stowers and Agustin Ramirez have been major contributors at the plate. The pitching staff hasn’t been great during the streak but they’ve done enough thanks to the run support they’ve received. At 8.5 GB of the final wild card spot they likely won’t make a run to grab that spot, but that’s just a half game behind division rival Atlanta, for reference.

24. Baltimore Orioles

One of the craziest box scores of the season happened on Friday as the Baltimore Orioles fended off the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 22-8. Ramon Urias, who replaced Jordan Westburg in that game, had three hits as did Colton Cowser. They also had two players who each recorded four hits in Gunnar Henderson and Gary Sanchez. The offensive explosion was great to see and made a 3-3 week even more exciting. At seven games back of the final wild card spot there’s an outside chance they can make a run. but they’ll need a bit of luck to get there.

23. Kansas City Royals

It’s about to start getting feisty in Kansas City as they’re losing steam in the wild card race. After losing seven of their last eight they’re now 4.5 GB of the final wild card spot. The offense has been anemic, scoring two or fewer runs in six of those eight games. It’s simply not enough to give their pitching staff a real chance as they haven’t given up more than five runs in any of those games. If they’re going to get that wild card spot they’ll need to pick things up majorly or else they’ll be falling quick.

22. Texas Rangers

Rangers fans got a lot of extra baseball this week whether they wanted it or not. They went to extras in four of their six games this week, amounting to a 3-3 record. At 41-43 they’re well behind preseason expectations, in which they were projected to contend for the AL West, but they’re sitting just 2.5 GB of the final wild card spot. There’s a mess of AL teams fighting for that, so they’ll have to do something strong to separate themselves from the rest and return to the playoffs for the first time since winning the World Series.

21. Minnesota Twins

The Twins will probably be more excited for their three-game in Miami than they normally would be. That game will be the first game they play in July, which they will be very thankful for as they went 9-18 in June. For reference, the Colorado Rockies went 10-16 in June. Not the way the Twins want to play baseball but it’s what’s happening right now for them. They’re lucky to be only three games back of the final wild card spot and should have a chance to be buyers at the trade deadline if they want to snag that wild card.

20. Cleveland Guardians

Cleveland’s week wasn’t great as they lost two of three to the Blue Jays and got swept by the Cardinals over the weekend. Normally reliable offensive options in Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez both struggled at the plate as Cleveland got shut out in three of those six games. The Guardians can’t afford a lack of offensive production with their pitching staff giving up six or more runs in all but two games this week. They sit at 2.5 GB of the final wild card spot and now will need to consider both pitching and hitting upgrades at the deadline.

19. Atlanta Braves

A big week against division rivals New York and Philadelphia resulted in a 3-4 week for the Braves. They continue to face a lot of pressure with a very talented roster but a huge deficit to make up as they’re now eight games back of the final NL wild card spot. This would normally be a sell spot for most teams but most of the Braves current roster is under team control for quite some time. Veteran Marcell Ozuna is an exception and, if the Braves decide to sell pieces, he’d be one that will draw interest. In the meantime, Ronald Acuna Jr. and his 1.109 OPS need to continue to make their offense as effective as possible.

18. Los Angeles Angels

Are the Angels now a team that you’ve got to watch out for? They’ve won five of their last eight games and are just two games behind the final wild card spot. They’ve got the ninth most effective offense over the last 14 days with a 114 wRC+, driven by Jo Adell (160 wRC+) and Mike Trout (135 wRC+). Yusei Kikuchi has been dominant in June as well, posting a 2.25 ERA in June. The Angels may be a sneaky team to watch out for, especially if they’re able to add more pitching help at the deadline.

17. Boston Red Sox

Maybe the Rafael Devers trade was a mistake based on how Boston’s been performing. Ever since the trade they’ve gone 4-8, including a seven-game losing streak that got snapped on Saturday. The offense, outside of a few select players, has been rather underwhelming while the pitching has actually been pretty good whenever Walker Buehler isn’t on the hill. At three games back of the wild card they’ve got a real shot to grab it but Boston fans have to feel uneasy about what their front office may be considering with the trade deadline right around the corner.

16. Cincinnati Reds

Are the Reds flying a bit under the radar here? They’re sitting just 2.5 GB of the final NL wild card spot after a walkoff win over the Padres on Sunday. Cincinnati’s gone 15-10 in June, mostly without the help of their ace Hunter Greene. Brady Singer and Andrew Abbott have both pitched well in June while the rest of the starters have been very hittable. Their 97 wRC+ in June isn’t amazing, but it’s been enough to help propel them to wins. Maybe the Reds can be a sneaky underdog if they can keep things interesting heading into September.

15. Arizona Diamondbacks

It’s never a good sign when you get swept by the Marlins but the DBacks couldn’t fend them off this weekend. They’ve been snake-bitten (bad pun, I know) by their pitching struggles. Zac Gallen and Brandon Pfaadt have been bad while Merrill Kelly has held things together. Eduardo Rodriguez and Ryne Nelson have both been able to turn things around lately but they’re still going to be question marks for the DBacks going forward until they prove themselves more. If Arizona wants to keep up in the wild card race they’ll need to improve their pitching at the deadline.

14. Seattle Mariners

Things are going pretty well in Seattle if you ask Mariners fans. They’re playing competitive ball, Cal Raleigh is in the MVP discussion and Logan Gilbert is back. They’re winning now and have made June a more respectable month for them after starting off slow. They’re holding onto the final wild card spot and would love to get some more distance between them and the cluster of teams chasing them. With a chance to make a run in the playoffs, expect the Mariners to be active at the deadline as they look for more offensive help in their lineup.

13. Toronto Blue Jays

After a 15-10 June, the Blue Jays hold a two game lead in the wild card race. The offense has started to turn things on, getting contributions from unexpected sources like Alejandro Kirk, Addison Barger and Ernie Clement. Their contributions have been needed as the pitching staff was giving up quite a few runs. Both Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman posted up 5.46 ERAs in June. Though normally stout, those two struggled. They’ll need to turn it around to get Toronto really going and excited for the playoffs as they’re currently in a great position.

12. St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals finished off a great week by sweeping the Guardians and hold onto the final NL wild card spot with a one game lead over the Padres. A 19-8 May put them on the map but a 14-13 June helped them stay in great position for contention. They did this with a 4.44 ERA from their pitching staff in June, maybe making them a tough lucky with their league average wRC+ that month. But they were able to squeak out wins and hold a short lead. They’ll likely need to upgrade their outfield at the trade deadline to keep their lead, though, so expect them to have interest in teams who are looking to sell.

11. San Diego Padres

The Padres lost their series to the Reds this weekend but overall they’ve been pretty solid in the past couple weeks. They’re 6-4 in their last 10 and are a game back of the Cardinals for the final NL wild card spot. Pitching was strong in June as their staff posted a 3.74 ERA. That’s mostly driven by Stephen Kolek, Ryan Bergert and a strong bullpen. Manny Machado drove the offense with a 130 wRC+. With the Padres they’ve not been afraid to take big shots as of late so expect them to be in the market for big names on the starting pitching market once the deadline approaches.

10. San Francisco Giants

Has there officially been a winner of the Rafael Devers trade yet? Devers has been a net positive to the Giants, barely, but they’re just 4-9 since the news of the trade broke on that Sunday night. They’ve been swept by the Marlins and lost a series to the White Sox this week. Their next opponent, the DBacks, were also swept by the Marlins. So it will be a battle of two of the three teams the Marlins have swept this year. A dubious honor but one the Giants will be fighting for.

9. Milwaukee Brewers

Winners in eight of their last ten, the Brewers continue to be a bit underrated this season. They hold a wild card spot and have a half game lead over the Cardinals in the final spot, essentially giving them a 1.5 game lead over the Padres. Christian Yelich has been a fantastic source of offense for the Brewers, as he always is, while Jacob Misiorowski is taking the league by storm. Milwaukee is generally overlooked, but they’re putting together a decent run that makes them a team that shouldn’t be overlooked any further.

8. Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa’s run that we highlighted may have come to a bit of a halt over the weekend as they lost a series to the Orioles, but Tampa has continued to be a very strong force in the American League since May. From a pitching perspective they’ve been very good outside of Taj Bradley, who’s normally better than his 5.09 ERA June. But others like Zack Littell and Drew Rasmussen have carried the staff through the month. The Rays continue to always find a way to be competitive and are looking to make a deep run into October.

7. New York Mets

Last week we had the Mets all the way up at number three but their continuous fall, among other teams rising, has dropped them to seven. Getting swept by the Pirates this weekend marks the third time they’ve been swept in their last five series. June has been a month to forget for New York as Kodai Senga got injured, four of their five starters have posted a 4.50 ERA or worse during the month and they lost the division lead to the Phillies. They still hold a wild card spot but the feeling of their 2025 season has certainly changed from what it was a month ago.

6. Philadelphia Phillies

Speaking of those Phillies, here are your NL East division leaders. Their 1.5 game lead over the Mets could be even bigger had they not gotten swept by the Astros but it still works for the Phillies. They’ve held out alright without Bryce Harper in the lineup but there’s a chance he could be activated again for games this week. The pitcher has been spectacular though as Zack Wheeler, Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez all posted ERAs below 2.00 in June, giving the Phillies a chance no matter who was in the lineup. Expect them to continue to stay strong and make a real run at things in October.

5. Chicago Cubs

Chicago’s been strong this season and continues to be a force. Shota Imanaga was able to return from injury this week and the Cubs beat the Cardinals 3-0 as he threw five innings of one hit ball. The lineup continues to dominate. Yet Chicago only holds a two-game lead over the Brewers for the NL Central division lead. With the offense clearly being a strong suit for Chicago, expect them to be on the lookout for starting pitching to trade for before the deadline.

4. Houston Astros

The Astros just can’t stop losing. They’re on a 14-4 run and hold a 6.5 game lead in the AL West. That’s not quite a “wrapped up” situation, but given the question marks below them in the division it’s clear that the rest will be fighting for a wild card rather than the division. Hunter Brown has been a dominant ace for Houston, posting a 1.74 ERA this season. Expect the Astros to continue their winning ways this week as they start off with a nice three game set at Coors Field.

3. New York Yankees

The Yankees dropped another series this week against the Reds before potentially getting things corrected against the A’s. However, it’s been an underwhelming June for the pinstripes. However, it’s been an offensive drop for the Yankees that’s caused them to perform below par. They’re hitting for a 97 wRC+ in June, well below their season averages. Their pitching staff has been real solid, specifically Max Fried, Will Warren and Clarke Schmidt as all have a 3.00 ERA or lower in June. Given the Yankees’ expectations, they should be very active at the trade deadline as they look for an infield bat.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers

It feels like they’ve finally turned a corner. With a 17-10 June, the Dodgers now are tied with the Tigers for the best record in baseball. They’ve won 12 of their last 15 games. Shohei Ohtani has returned to the mound as an opener. Clayton Kershaw posted a 2.28 ERA in June. Max Muncy hit seven HR for a 211 wRC+ in June. It’s all clicking for the Dodgers. Mind you Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman each had an underwhelming month at the plate. They’re finally starting to look scary and anyone who wants to win the NL will have to go through them.

1. Detroit Tigers

In past weeks I’ve been a touch bearish on the Tigers but they just keep winning. Tarik Skubal has been phenomenal this season and Sunday was no exception as he struck out 13 Twins in seven innings while allowing just one hit. He’s going to be the AL Cy Young award winner for a second year and leads a Tigers team that has figured things out on offense. Riley Greene was their best hitter in June as he posted a 188 wRC+ in June. The advanced stats still say there’s a bit of negative regression coming for their pitching staff but there’s something else brewing in Detroit. The Tigers are our new number one team.
