ANALYSIS: Patterson’s involvement within Washington’s backfield rotation had already been rising due to multiple health issues that had impacted Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Now, Gibson’s placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list has cleared the runway for Patterson to vault atop the Football Team’s depth chart during their NFC East showdown with Philadelphia.
Gibson had been contending with toe and hip injuries, while McKissic remains on injured reserve due to the lingering neck problem that has sidelined him since Week 12. Patterson should now operate with his most extensive workload of the season against the Eagles, even though he will share touches with Jonathan Williams.
Patterson’s snap share has elevated from 7.2% in Weeks 1-13 to 20.8% since Week 14. His averages of 3.7 attempts and 11.8 yards per game through Week 13 have also increased to 5.7 attempts, and 27.3 yards per game during his last three games. He will easily exceed his most recent averages and can be seized from the waiver wire by anyone who is searching for a flex option.
Expectations should be tempered by his timeshare with Willams, and his matchup versus a Philadelphia run defense that currently ranks ninth overall (104.6 yards per game). If you are in a pinch for a flex spot in Week 17, Patterson could be worth a shot based on expected volume of touches alone. Just be sure to check back and make sure that Antonio Gibson is 100% ruled out before plugging Patterson into your lineup.
