Memphis forward Xavier Tillman is a worthy consideration as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 5 of the NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 14-Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 1% of leagues
ANALYSIS: Through injuries and absences, the Memphis Grizzlies have had to call several players numbers that otherwise wouldn't have received an early opportunity. As a result, Xavier Tillman, a 2020 early second-round draft pick who ended up in Memphis via trade by Sacramento, has been playing close to 20 minutes per game. In that time, he has averaged 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, and just put up 15 points and four rebounds against the Sixers through 28 minutes. Tillman has been shooting an ugly clip from distance, but thankfully hasn't been taking many threes, and has negated that figure with a 63.4% success rate from two-point territory.
With the Grizzlies style of play, the return of Ja Morant won't dig very deep into Tillman's floor time, and the return of Jaren Jackson still has quite a way to go. The former Big 10 Sixth Man and Defensive Player of the year strongly demonstrated his defensive value in his final season at Michigan State, coming away with 2.1 blocks and 1.2 steals per game in addition to the double-double he averaged. In putting up admirable scoring and rebounding numbers through 20 minutes a game with a steal-volume upside, Xavier Tillman has something to offer those in deeper leagues on each given night.
