Skylar Thompson is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup option for quarterbacks. Target him as a free agent add off waivers for Week 3 of the 2024 NFL season.

ANALYSIS: Football fans held their breath when Tua Tagovailoa exited with an apparent head injury last Thursday. We quickly found out he suffered yet another concussion, requiring him to be placed on injured reserve.
Looking long-term, Tagovailoa will have to make a difficult decision about whether he's willing to continue his NFL career and risk his health with every hit. In the short term, the Dolphins are still playoff hopefuls and will need to replace Tagovailoa under center.
Skylar Thompson, who was the Dolphins' backup quarterback for the first two weeks of the season, will draw the start in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks. After taking over the offense midway through last Thursday's game, Thompson completed eight of 14 passes for 80 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Thompson is a former preseason sensation, but his upside hasn't exactly translated to regular-season success. He was thrust into a similar situation in 2022, ultimately completing 57 percent of his passes for 534 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions.
This game against the Vikings in 2022 was the best Skylar Thompson has looked in any NFL action in my eyes. Unfortunately he got hurt and couldn’t finish the game. It’s going to be interesting to see how he looks going forward. This is his 3rd year in the offense, so he should be… pic.twitter.com/IZNsdveG7m

Nevertheless, Thompson will get his shot leading this offense in Week 3, putting him on the fantasy radar again. He's only worth adding in 2QB leagues where waiver wire options are already slim. Thompson's upside may be higher than some of those other available players given that he has Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De'Von Achane at his disposal.
Of course, managers adding Thompson must temper expectations knowing that Thompson's job is far from safe. Miami recently signed Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore practice squad and could give him first-team reps if the Thompson experiment goes bad next Sunday.
Nevertheless, for now, the job belongs to Thompson. He ranks as a top-28 fantasy quarterback and should be added in most QB2 leagues this week.
