2025 First Base Outlooks For Fantasy Baseball

Pete Alonso, New York Mets

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract to return to Queens after a disappointing 2024 season. The powerful 30-year-old still hit 34 home runs with 88 RBI and 91 runs scored to go with a .240/.329/.459 slash line over 695 plate appearances.

He played in all 162 games and hasn't missed more than 10 games in any of his six MLB seasons, which should instill confidence in his availability at the heart of NYM's order. However, the slip in batted-ball metrics led to lesser output after swatting 46 HRs with 118 RBI in '23.

It's the first full season of his career where his expected slugging percentage was below the 92nd percentile (82nd). His 42.1 percent fly-ball rate was his lowest since 2019 and the 18.4 percent HR/FB rate was his lowest ever as his strikeout rate crept up near 25 percent.

Perhaps the poor free-agent market experience will motivate as he bats cleanup behind Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto. He could threaten his career-high mark of 131 RBI set in '22 even without a return to his prime HR form as a result.

But a Mark Vientos breakout with a failure to rebound could slide Alonso to fifth. Early ATC projections of 33 HRs and 94 RBI in 143 games appear modest and echo his February RotoBaller rank of around 75, which trails the early 53 NFBC ADP.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is coming off hitting a career-best .323 with 30 home runs, 98 runs scored, 103 RBI, and two steals in his age-25 season. He made 11 starts at third base as well and should be eligible at the hot corner on several platforms.

Guerrero also played in 159 games with 697 plate appearances, which gives him six straight seasons without missing extended time to open his career. Health can never be guaranteed but that kind of track record can't be scoffed at.

Those who ascribe to the best ability being availability surely have Vladito circled on their draft boards. His strong 2024 was backed by a dark-red Statcast profile that had him in the 97th or higher percentile for average exit velocity, expected batting average, slugging percentage, and weighted on-base average.

The young star did all of this while improving his walk rate and dropping his whiffs, rocking a career-low 9.6 percent swinging-strike mark. The only thing he likely can't do is give you a chance at double-digit steals but being such an average boost is increasingly helpful in today's era.

Late January ATC projections give him four steals to go with 30 home runs and a .294 batting average. His early ADP is around the 16th pick, which is about where RotoBaller's consensus has him. If he does chip in 8-10 swipes or start upping his barrel rate into the elites then he could crack the first round for 2026.

-- Nick Mariano - RotoBaller

Freddie Freeman, Los Angeles Dodgers

Compared to his first two extraordinary seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Freddie Freeman's 2024 was a letdown. Still, the former Silver Slugger delivered a solid final line of .282-22-89-81-9. Freeman went on to earn the World Series MVP after hitting a home run in each of the first four games of the series en route to securing LA's title.

Despite the decline in production, Freeman's plate discipline metrics were par for the course and even though his expected averages were his lowest in the Statcast era, they were still well above league averages. Freeman had surgery in December to remove loose bodies from his right ankle.

While he is expected to be ready for spring training, fantasy managers should monitor his recovery in case of any setbacks. Assuming he is good to go, Freeman is an excellent spot for a rebound hitting in the top third of LA's star-studded lineup. Currently ranked as RotoBaller's No. 3 first baseman, Freeman is appropriately priced at a 24.12 ADP.
