Top 5 Two-Start Pitcher Streamers for Week 13

A wise fantasy baseball manager never rests. He is never satisfied with his team and is always on the hunt for the player that can help in both the present and future. For this article, we’ll focus on the present, as we present the top pitcher streamers who’ll be making two outings this week.

We do this every week, because deep down we all know those last two or three guys taken in drafts won’t be with us the whole way through. Mix and match is the name of the game and maximizing these players’ values is the goal. Here are the top five two-start pitching streamers for week 12. NOTE: these are expected starts.

Danny Duffy, KC

vs STL 6/27, @ PHI 7/2

Owned In: 18% of Fleaflicker Leagues

After spending the first month and a half of the season coming out of the bullpen as a reliever, Danny Duffy was inserted into the Kansas City starting rotation due to injuries. The 27-year-old has not been slowly making progress and is turning into a solid starting pitcher. He began June with three consecutive quality starts and has a 3.54 ERA through his last five starts. His control is impeccable for the most part, and he’s already got a double-digit strikeout performance under his belt this year. This week he’ll embark on a tour of the National League with a pair of starts against NL clubs.

The first will come against the St. Louis Cardinals. While the Cards are making strides in the wild card competition, Duffy has a history of success against them, with a 1.86 ERA in two appearances. If he can get his walk rates back to his regular level, it’ll go a long way in keeping the Cardinals a weak team in the walks department. His second start will come against a much more manageable opponent in the Philadelphia Phillies. Philadelphia continues to struggle, recently embarking on a nine-game losing streak. As one of the two lowest scoring teams in all of baseball, expect Duffy to put on a worthy performance.

Matt Shoemaker, LAA

vs HOU 6/27, @ BOS 7/3

Owned In: 27% of Fleaflicker Leagues

29-year-old Matt Shoemaker continues to overcome his first month of the season. Since going 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA in April, Shoemaker has been terrific in May and June, but his record won’t demonstrate this. In four starts during May, the Michigan native went 2-1 with a 3.28 ERA, closing out the month with a pair of quality start, double digit strikeout performances. In June, he’s posted three more quality starts, striking out 39 batters in 36 innings. His ERA is a solid 2.50, but his record stands at 0-3 due to his team’s lack of run support. This will be the biggest obstacle he’ll have to overcome this week as he gets two starts.

His first will be a second consecutive outing against the Astros.  Shoemaker is 1-1 on the season against Houston, but has surrendered just five run in 15.2 innings against them, striking out 18 along the way. This right-hander knows the Astros and should perform honorably against them again. His second start of the week will be on Sunday at Fenway Park. While he hasn’t yet faced the Sox this year, he’s performed well against two of their division rivals. If Shoemaker is to be successful against Boston, he’ll have to focus on his 70.3 LOB% to do the trick.

Adam Conley, MIA

@ DET 6/28, @ ATL 7/3

Owned In: 14% of Fleaflicker Leagues

Adam Conley’s roller coaster season has progressed into a new level this month. The 26-year-old has made five starts in June, recording three quality saves and a 2.59 ERA in the process. His most recent start was his best, as he fired eight shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves. Conley’s strengths have been his ability to limit home runs, his strikeout rates, his LOB% and his BABIP. These will come in handy this week as he makes a pair of road starts.

First, he’ll take on the Tigers at Comerica Park. Conley will have to focus on his strikeouts, as the Tigers rank in the top ten baseball teams in the category. Additionally, Detroit’s scheduled starter, Mike Pelfrey, boasts a 1-7 record with a 5.19 ERA. In his second start, he’ll take on the Braves once again. As we’ve chronicled all season, the Braves are the worst team in baseball. Conley’s chances are looking considerably positive for another victory.

Trevor Bauer, CLE

@ ATL 6/28, @ TOR 7/3

Owned In: 30% of Fleaflicker Leagues

After four seasons in the majors, it appears that 25-year-old Trevor Bauer may finally be solving his issues. Initially being a reliever this season, Bauer was turned into a starter at the end of April. After working out the kinks in May, the North Hollywood native has turned it up a notch here in June. Through five starts, he holds a 2-0 record with a 1.86 ERA as the Indians have skyrocketed to first in the AL Central.

His most recent start was his best, as recorded a complete game victory with just one run surrendered and 10 strikeouts. Luckily for him, his next start will pose a lesser challenge, as he’ll take on the Braves in Atlanta. At his current form, Bauer would seem poised for another victory. His second start will pose a tougher challenge, as he’ll take on the Blue Jays in Toronto. Bauer’s confrontation with the Jays will hang heavily on walks, as he’s one of the more disciplined pitchers while the home team ranks as one of the best in the department. Ultimately, bank on his low home run rates to be the deciding factor in what should be another solid outing.

CC Sabathia, NYY

vs TEX 6/28, @ SD 7/3

Owned In:  27% of Fleaflicker Leagues

CC Sabathia’s renaissance year hit a bump this past week as he was pounded by the Rockies and appeared to hurt his ankle. The good news, however, is that Sabathia himself has admitted he doesn’t expect to miss his next start. The 35-year-old has been absolutely stellar since the beginning of May, with a 4-2 record and six quality starts. Sabathia’s been relying heavily on stranding runners, occasionally throwing in a respectable number of strikeouts.

As he readies for an upcoming two-start week, the first will be against the Texas Rangers, whom he already has a quality start against this year. While the Rangers are one of the better team in the American League, they rank outside of the top ten in home runs, while Sabathia rarely surrenders them. If this trend continues, expect the big man to succeed at home. His second start will be an easier one, as he’ll pitch in San Diego against the lowly Padres. Sabathia has been a much better pitcher on the road, with his ERA at 2.14. With the Padres holding an 18-22 record at home, Sabathia figures to be in for a strong chance at victory.
