NFL Coaching Matters: NFC East Preview

Tony Pollard - Fantasy Football Rankings, Draft Sleepers, NFL Injury News

NFL Head Coaches and Offensive Coordinators can have a major impact on fantasy football values. This article by Eli Grabanski brings up historical data on key NFC East coaches in 2023.

After every NFL season, NFL teams take the time to evaluate not only the players but also the coaching staff and front office as well. While many teams choose to retain the same head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator, a few other teams opt to go in a new direction with their coaching staff.

Today's article will look at the fantasy track record of each team's head coaches and offensive coordinators in the NFC East to help pinpoint potential fantasy values. The New York Giants will maintain their core offensive coaching staff while the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles will each have new offensive coordinators on staff.

Without further ado, let's dive into the coaches of the NFC East!

New York Giants

2023 Head Coach: Brian Daboll

Brian Daboll struggled early in his career as an offensive coordinator, calling plays for franchises that lacked talented players such as the Cleveland Browns (2009-2010), Miami Dolphins (2011), and the Kansas City Chiefs (2012). After gaining more experience with a few different organizations, he got another opportunity to serve as an NFL offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills (2018-2021). The Bills' offense was one of the best in the league under his leadership and performed well enough for him to earn the New York Giants head coaching job in 2022 where he led the team to the playoffs.

Below are some fantasy statistics from his career as an offensive play-caller so we can get a better idea of how to value the New York Giants players in 2023.

Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka's Takeaways & Expectations

Because Mike Kafka has only worked one year as an offensive coordinator under Brian Daboll, this section will primarily look at the fantasy success of Brian Daboll's previous offenses.

Surprisingly, for the most part, Brian Daboll's running back, wide receiver, and tight end rooms have been below average in terms of fantasy production over the course of his career. While a large part of that has to do with the fact he hasn't gotten to work with very many talented offenses outside of his time with the Buffalo Bills (2018-2021), that's unlikely to change very much in 2023 as the current New York Giants offense still looks to be a work in progress this upcoming season. Outside of Saquon Barkley, it's going to be an uphill battle for any New York Giant to be more than a FLEX play in 2023-24.

Fantasy Relevant Players: Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, Tommy Devito, Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Eric Gray, Gary Brightwell, Isaiah Hodgins, Jalin Hyatt, Jamison Crowder, Darius Slayton, Parris Campbell, Wan'Dale Robinson, Sterling Shepard, Collin Johnson, Darren Waller, and Daniel Bellinger

Philadelphia Eagles

2023 Head Coach: Nick Sirianni

Nick Sirianni has been the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach since 2021. Defore joining the Eagles, Sirianni spent three years as the offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts (2018-2020). Given his offensive background, let's dive into some fantasy statistics from Sirianni's experiences running an offense to get a better understanding of how the Eagles may utilize their offensive players in 2023.

Nick Sirianni & Brian Johnson's Takeaways & Expectations

Because offensive coordinator Brian Johnson has no prior NFL experience in an offensive coordinator or head coaching role, we will focus on head coach Nick Sirianni's previous experience as an offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts (2018-2020) and as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (2021-Present) in this section.

For the most part, the fantasy track record of Nick Sirianni's offenses is pretty strong. In four out of five years, his running back room and tight end room have scored more fantasy points than the NFL league average (0.5 PPR). While Sirianni's wide receiver room hasn't generally been as fantasy-dominant relative to the NFL league average, his wide receivers did have a fantastic season last year where they averaged 7.22 fantasy PPG over the NFL league average (0.5 PPR). This is an offense that you definitely want to invest in for fantasy purposes, with D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, and Dallas Goedert looking like particularly good gambles at their current ADPs.

Fantasy Relevant Players: Jalen Hurts, Marcus Mariota, Tanner McKee, D'Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Quez Watkins, Olamide Zaccheaus, Dallas Goedert, Dan Arnold, and Jack Stoll

Dallas Cowboys

2023 Head Coach: Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy has been the Dallas Cowboys' head coach since 2020. Before joining the Cowboys, McCarthy spent five seasons as the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator (2000-2004), one season as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator (2005), and 13 seasons as the Green Bay Packers head coach (2006-2018). Given McCarthy's offensive background, let's take a look at what his offenses have done in the past at the NFL level to get a better understanding of how the Cowboys' offense may perform fantasy-wise in 2023.

2023 Offensive Coordinator: Brian Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Kellen Moore this offseason to bring in Brian Schottenheimer as the new offensive coordinator. Before taking the job with the Cowboys, Schottenheimer had previously worked as an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets (2006-2011), St. Louis Rams (2012-2014), and Seattle Seahawks (2018-2020). Mike McCarthy & Brian Schottenheimer's Takeaways & Expectations

Mike McCarthy is one of the more experienced coaches on the offensive side of the ball, so we have a pretty good idea of who he is and his team tendencies at this point of his career.

Looking at the charts above, we can see that Mike McCarthy's running back and tight end rooms have generally been below average in fantasy leagues throughout his 22-year career as an offensive coordinator or head coach. His wide receiver room has consistently been one of the best in the business at getting fantasy production out of his receivers.

While Mike McCarthy has his tendencies, it's equally important to pay attention to the past fantasy success of his new offensive coordinator – Brian Schottenheimer. Throughout his career, Brian Schottenheimer's teams have gotten above-average fantasy production out of the running back room, but below-average production out of the wide receiver and tight end rooms.

Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how these two coaches complement each other in the 2023 season. Based on their previous strengths as coaches, the most likely scenario is that the running back room and wide receiver room continue to score more fantasy points than the NFL league averages, but the tight end room is well below average. While Tony Pollard, CeeDee Lamb, and Brandin Cooks aren't cheap enough to be labeled 'steals', they should all be strong fantasy options again for the 2023-24 season in this offense.

Fantasy Relevant Players: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush, Tony Pollard, Malik Davis, Deuce Vaughn, Ronald Jones, CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert, Jake Ferguson, and Peyton Hendershot

Washington Commanders

2023 Offensive Coordinator: Eric Bieniemy

This past offseason, Eric Bieniemy decided to leave the Kansas City Chiefs to escape Andy Reid's shadow and have the opportunity to call plays for the Washington Commanders. Bieniemy served as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator from 2018-2022, but it's hard to tell how much of a role he had with the gameday play-calling for the team with Andy Reid around. Below are some season statistics from his time in Kansas City as an offensive coordinator compared to the NFL league averages in each of those years.

Eric Bieniemy's Takeaways & Expectations

Eric Bieniemy is one of the biggest question marks as an offensive play-caller in the NFL because while he has served as an offensive coordinator in the past for the Kansas City Chiefs, it's more of a mystery how much of a role he had in the play-calling on game day. Having said this, we can make some guesses about how he may impact players' fantasy value based on the statistics/tendencies of the Kansas City Chiefs position groups during his time with the team.

Looking at the data, the Chiefs running back room was fairly mediocre during Bieniemy's time with the team – one good fantasy season, two mediocre fantasy seasons, and one bad fantasy season. This is a little worrisome if you plan on investing in the Washington Commanders' backfield since their previous coordinator Scott Turner was one of the better play-callers for fantasy running backs in the league. This team is unlikely to produce anything more than a FLEX-caliber running back in 2023, so you probably shouldn't be drafting Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson much higher than the 6th or 7th round in 12-team leagues.

The wide receiver and tight end rooms are where it gets really hard to judge how good Bieniemy will be for fantasy purposes since when he previously served as an offensive coordinator, his quarterback was Patrick Mahomes. Now his team's starting quarterback will either be Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett so it's unlikely that Bieniemy will experience close to the same level of success.

Fantasy Relevant Players: Sam Howell, Jacoby Brissett, Jake Fromm, Brian Robinson Jr., Antonio Gibson, Jaret Patterson, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samuel, Dyami Brown, Dax Milne, Logan Thomas, John Bates
